PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a light heavyweight MMA rules bout between Junior Brandon (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class) and Victor Sagat (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class). Brandon comes to the cage accompanied by Life Is Beautiful. Victor Sagat told me before the fight that he's been watching a lot of DVDs so let's see if that helps him in this one! I can't wait to find out!

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the light heavyweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 12 - 13 - 0, fighting out of Los Angeles, Junior Brandon!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 11 - 2 - 0, fighting out of Las Vegas, Victor Sagat!
The judges for this bout are Phil Schofield, James Ackerman and Paul Tew.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!
Brandon with a poor takedown
enabling Sagat to counter with a crisp jab.


It looks like Junior Brandon has been cut.
Sagat circles away from the clinch attempt
enabling Sagat to counter with a crisp jab.
Brandon tries to drive through with a takedown attempt but Sagat defends well and Brandon ends up having to push Sagat into the cage where they will battle it out in the clinch.
Brandon takes one on the chin but seems OK.

Brandon takes the fight into the clinch.
Brandon drops down looking for an ankle pick but Sagat pulls his leg out and moves away.
That's three failed takedown attempts in the round for Junior Brandon. That's going to take a lot out of him.
We've had a slow start to the round here - hopefully the action picks up.
Sagat misses with a hook.

Brandon takes a step back and watches a body kick go sailing past his mid section.
Brandon seems to be moving with more speed, compared to his last bout. He must have been working on that in the gym.

Brandon shoots in for a takedown. "I don't think so" says Sagat as he avoids it easily.

Brandon is pinned up against the cage taking some big shots here. The referee is looking closely deciding whether he should stop the fight.

Sagat circles away from the clinch attempt.
Junior Brandon seems to be the more aggressive standup fighter in this bout.
Brandon shoots in for a takedown - he's clinched up with Sagat but Sagat pushes him off and we're back to square one.
Sagat lunges in with swinging rights and lefts but Brandon circles away quickly and effectively.
Sagat misses with the combination.
Wooooo! Give it up for these two warriors! They are putting on a show!

Brandon shoots in and gets a takedown into Sagat's guard.
Brandon stands up and looks to throw the legs aside to pass to side control. Sagat swivels though and keeps the full guard.
Brandon trying to control the position from guard on top but Sagat is wriggling around, looking for whatever he can.
Sagat told us pre-fight that he has been working on his escapes in training. Let's see if he can call on some of his new skills to get back to his feet.
Sagat seems keen to control rather than go for a submission, at least for now.
The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing.

Brandon not doing a lot at the moment. He'll have to show some more aggression or the fight will get stood up.
Brandon stands and throws Sagat's legs to the side, diving into side control.

Brandon goes for an armbar here - this could be all over! But no, Sagat has escaped beautifully and is now on top in side control! Oh, that's unlucky for Brandon but great work by Sagat.

Brandon tries to get back to half guard but can't.
Sagat in side control, just content to control the action for now.
You can see the frustration on Brandon's face, being in this tough position on the bottom.

The fighters' corners scream their final instructions, as the referee calls time. Here we go, back to the action!

Brandon is working for a submission of some sort.
Junior Brandon overall seems to be getting the better of the ground position in the fight so far.
Brandon seems content to maintain position for now, rather than mounting any offense.

Brandon tries to pass to full mount but Sagat defends it.
Sagat is trying to maintain the position but Brandon is very close to passing his half guard.

Sagat really doesn't want to stay on the ground with Brandon. If he can't get it back to his feet, it's only a matter of time before he'll be tapping out.

Brandon seems to have a rather negative gameplan on the ground. He seems keen to just score the takedown and hold down Sagat for as long as he can get away with.

The ref stands the fighters back up due to a lack of activity.
Brandon moves in looking to clinch but Sagat pushes him off.
Sagat lunges in with swinging rights and lefts but Brandon circles away quickly and effectively.

Brandon bobs and weaves well there to avoid the strikes.

and Brandon takes a counter punch right on the button for his troubles.

Brandon closes the distance and gets a trip takedown into side control. Sagat quickly recovers to half guard.

Brandon is looking for a kimura but Sagat is holding onto that half guard position, so it's hard for Brandon to get the leverage.

Brandon wants to take a breather but Sagat is having none of it.
The fighters are pressed up against the cage, both looking to find a bit of space to work.
Sagat is looking to control Brandon's leg but it's slowly edging free. Can Sagat avoid being mounted?

Brandon rushes forward with a series of wild hooks but Sagat moves out of range and avoids them all easily.
Sagat has used his reach advantage pretty well so far tonight.
Nice takedown defense from Sagat. No joy for Brandon on that attempt.
As Brandon backs off Sagat throws a huge counter combo but Brandon manages to avoid it all.

and Brandon counters with a takedown into side control! That could mean trouble for Sagat!
Brandon throwing ground and pound but whilst doing so, he forgets to control position and Sagat works his way back to half guard. Good composure under pressure.
Brandon wants to lay and pray for a moment but Sagat keeps working.
We've had a slow start to the round here - hopefully the action picks up.
Brandon not landing any meaningful shots this time.
Brandon prevents Sagat from improving his position.
Brandon looks to land a strike but Sagat avoids it nicely and regains full guard.

Brandon is pushing down on Sagat's leg trying to pass to half guard. Sagat is fighting to maintain full guard but Brandon has managed to sneak the leg through.
Brandon wants to take a breather but Sagat is having none of it.
We get told so often about how wrestlers don't like to be on their backs. Let's see if Sagat can do anything to dispel that myth.

Brandon thumps the canvas. Not on purpose obviously - he just missed Sagat's head.

Neither fighter has done anything of merit for a good minute or two here and the crowd are not happy about it.
Sagat trying to hold on to Brandon's head to control him but Brandon postures up.

Brandon looks over to his corner - he wants some instructions but his corner are not responding.

The referee has stepped in and called for a break in the action. We'll restart on the feet.
Brandon shoots in for a takedown - he's clinched up with Sagat but Sagat pushes him off and we're back to square one.
A little jabbing left from Sagat on the counter but it doesn't find it's target.
Victor Sagat is looking to keep the fight on the feet at all costs.

Sagat is working an open guard here, looking to improve his position. No doubt that will leave him open to counters but at least he's being more offensive.

Brandon pressing down on his opponent's thigh, looking to pass guard. Sagat is keeping the position for now.
Brandon trying to control the position from guard on top but Sagat is wriggling around, looking for whatever he can.
Brandon is going to have to think about doing something other than just controlling because Sagat is managing to avoid having the position dictated to him.
We've had a lack of effective grappling in the last minute or so, which could well see a referee standup.

A lull in the action here being met with boos from the crowd.

The referee decides to stand the fighters back up.
Brandon fails miserably with a takedown attempt.
And an attempted straight right on the counter from Sagat! But no joy.
That's three failed takedown attempts in the round for Junior Brandon. That's going to take a lot out of him.

Sagat stuffs a takedown. It's all about dictating where the fight takes place and Sagat wants it to stay on the feet.

The crowd thankful this round is nearly over.
Sagat cracks Brandon with a hook to the jaw. Both fighters smile at eachother and high-five before getting back down to business.

And that's the end of the fight!
I would just about give that final round to Victor Sagat.
I think Sagat has won this one but let's see whether the judges agree with me. Over to the ring announcer for the scorecards.
