PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a lightweight MMA rules bout between Abdul Leon (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class) and Noah Pontzer (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class). These two fighters really are very evenly matched on the feet - it will be fascinating to see who can assert themselves in that aspect of the fight.

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the lightweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 1 - 1 - 0, fighting out of Hilo, Abdul Leon!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 0 - 0 - 0, fighting out of Hilo, Noah Pontzer!
The judges for this bout are Jeff Smith, Ryoma Takatsuka and Micheangelo Fripello.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!
Pontzer tries for a takedown but Leon sees it coming a mile off and avoids it easily.
Leon swats away the attempt to clinch by Pontzer.
Leon is trying hard to land a takedown here. Pontzer sprawls well and keeps this one on the feet.
Pontzer tries to grapple but his opponent circles
and Leon counters with a lovely straight right hand!

Leon rushes Pontzer and pushes him back against the cage in a clinch.
We've had a slow start to the round here - hopefully the action picks up.
Leon is working on a leg, looking for a takedown but Pontzer is defending well.
Pontzer tries a knee to the head but he's missed.
A bit of stalling here from Pontzer.

Leon pulls Pontzer into guard.
The fighters are pressed up against the cage, both looking to find a bit of space to work.

Pontzer gets to his feet and steps away from his opponent.

Leon is looking for a takedown here. He's shot in and has managed to get it, finishing up in Pontzer's half guard.
Leon throws a strike but Pontzer avoids it easily and moves to full guard.
Leon postures up and scores with a shot to the body and a follow up elbow to the head.

Pontzer pulls Leon in close to his closed guard and prevents Leon from doing any damage or advancing position.

Pontzer has his foot on Leon's thigh. He's trying to push off and get in position for a triangle, I think. Leon works his way back into a safe position though.
Pontzer looking to sweep here. No luck so far.
Pontzer avoiding any damage from the ground and pound.
Leon throws a strike but Pontzer rolls with it and manages to sweep. Now he's in guard on top.

Leon tries to land a sweep but no joy.

Pontzer decides to take the fight back to the feet.
Wooooo! Give it up for these two warriors! They are putting on a show!
Leon closes this distance looking for a takedown but Pontzer circles away.

Leon defends well against a solid takedown attempt from Pontzer.
Leon seem to be loading up, looking for a big counter.
Pontzer feints with a shoulder and throws a nice leg kick to Leon's calf.
Leon fails with a takedown attempt from distance.

Pontzer is looking for a takedown here. He's shot in and has managed to get it, finishing up in Leon's half guard.
Leon wants to improve his position but Pontzer is controlling well.
Leon is breathing heavily.
The referee calls for the fighters to work.

Leon is looking to escape.

Pontzer stands, ready to strike. The ref makes him back up and allows Leon to get to his feet.
Noah Pontzer seems to be the more aggressive standup fighter in this bout.

Leon has closed the distance and engaged Pontzer in a clinch.
Pontzer is looking to score with knees to the body. Maybe he'll change it up and go body then head. Leon is defending well for now.
Leon is working for a takedown up against the cage. He can't get it on this occasion though.
Leon misses with a shot to the kidneys.

Leon darts in looking for a takedown but Pontzer gets double underhooks and turns Leon into the cage.

Pontzer is trying to break the clinch but Leon is controlling him.
Leon gets double underhooks to prevent a takedown attempt from Pontzer.
Pontzer is trying to pull guard but being pressed up against the cage enables Leon to keep the fight standing.

And Pontzer tries to counter it with a takedown but Leon pushes his down on his head and steps out.

Pontzer lands a hook that snaps the head of Leon backwards.

It looks like Abdul Leon has been cut.
Pontzer is trying to push Leon away but Leon has him pressed against the cage, so he's going nowhere.

Pontzer pulls guard effortlessly.
Pontzer is controlling Leon's posture.
Pontzer has been the more effective fighter overall so far.
Leon content to strike from guard, landing some decent shots.
Boooooooooooooooooooo!!! God, this has been a terrible round. Come on you two, sort yourselves out!
Pontzer not looking particularly offensive just at the moment.

Pontzer pushes Leon off for just long enough to get back to his feet. Very athletic spring there.

Noah Pontzer showed his class in that round. I'd imagine he'll take it on all the scorecards.

The fighters get back to their feet, the hooter sounds and we're back to the action! Let's hear some noise people - this is the final round!



Leon tries to keep at a distance but Pontzer has taken the fight into the clinch.
Pontzer lands with a left to the head.
Leon blocks the elbow strike.
Pontzer jumps guard but Leon stands there with Pontzer around his waist. Pontzer gives up and drops back to his feet. We remain in the clinch.
Pontzer lands with a right to the head.
We've had a slow start to the round here - hopefully the action picks up.

Leon pushes off and circles away, back to the middle of the mat.

Leon wants to take the fight to the mat but Pontzer manages to get underhooks and keep the fight in the clinch.
Leon gets an overhook and lands an elbow to the side of the head.
Pontzer tries to break free but Leon pushes him back against the cage.
Pontzer lands with a right to the head.
Pontzer tries to jump guard but he falls flat on his backside. Leon smiles and moves away.
Pontzer looks to land a left hand but Leon moved out of range nicely.
Leon fakes high and shoots in for a takedown but Pontzer avoids it really well and circles away.

Left hook, right uppercut from Pontzer.

Pontzer closes the distance and pushes Leon back into the cage.
Pontzer is working for a takedown up against the cage. He can't get it on this occasion though.

Leon is working on a single leg takedown against the cage. Pontzer can't fight it off and eventually Leon manages to take the fight to the floor. Pontzer looks annoyed but at least he's managed to land in guard.

Leon throws a big right hand that misses.
Leon stops Pontzer from standing up.
There's a bit of a scramble here and now Pontzer is on top in guard.

Leon has an omoplata and is looking to use it perhaps as a submission or perhaps to transition. Pontzer is in a bit of discomfort here, but he's managed to free himself and has dived into side control! That didn't work out too well for Leon.
Both fighters are breathing heavily.
You can see the frustration on Leon's face, being in this tough position on the bottom.

Pontzer goes for an armbar! This could be all over! Wait, no, Leon rolls with the submission and now he's on top in Pontzer's guard! Nice work there by Leon!
Leon is looking to work some ground and pound but Pontzer has wrist control.

Pontzer is doing well to control the posture of his opponent and prevent any damage.
Pontzer wants to sweep here but Leon controlling him for the moment.
Pontzer utilising some decent striking defenses from the guard, preventing the ground and pound.
Noah Pontzer is fighting for a decision - hopefully he's judged it right and he's actually winning the fight.
Pontzer trying to keep a closed guard but Leon is proving a slippery customer.

The crowd thankful this round is nearly over.
Pontzer manages to sweep nicely, so he's now on top. Leon manages to get himself to full guard.

Abdul Leon has stepped it up - he knows he needs a finish here!

Leon escapes his hips to the side and looks to be working for an armbar. Pontzer gives him a little smile and shakes his head. No chance.

Noah Pontzer comfortably won the final round on my scorecard.
Well Pontzer has outworked and out performed his opponent in all aspects of the game today. He was simply too good and the decision should be no more than a formality. Over to the ring announcer for the scorecards.

Noah Pontzer decided to go for the less than humble approach in his post fight interview, telling everyone how he is going to conquer the world. The crowd seemed to like it when really that sort of approach could have gone either way.
