PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a bantamweight MMA rules bout between Thomas Buffel (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class) and Todd Hofmann (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class). These two fighters really are very evenly matched on the feet - it will be fascinating to see who can assert themselves in that aspect of the fight.

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the bantamweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 5 - 6 - 0, fighting out of Rio de Janeiro, Thomas Buffel!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 0 - 2 - 0, fighting out of Helsinki, Todd Hofmann!
The judges for this bout are Anni Minnemäki, Johanna Lukiainen and Matti Vanhoillinen.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!
Hofmann closes this distance looking for a takedown but Buffel circles away.
Nice sprawl there from Buffel as Hofmann shoots in.
Buffel attempts a counter takedown but Hofmann avoids it well and moves away.

Hofmann feints and then dives in with a takedown. That was a long way out but the feint bought him enough time to close the distance and complete the takedown. Now we'll play guard for a bit and see who can get the better of that position.
Buffel is adopting a defensive guard.
Hofmann really doesn't want to stay on the ground with Buffel. If he can't get it back to his feet, it's only a matter of time before he'll be tapping out.

Buffel is looking for a triangle here but Hofmann uses the submission attempt to pass into side control.
We've had a slow start to the round here - hopefully the action picks up.
Buffel can't do much from the bottom here.

Hofmann decides to stand back up. Hofmann steps back and let's Buffel get back to his feet.

Hofmann closes the distance and gets a double leg, slamming Buffel to the mat! Buffel manages to get full guard.
Buffel wants to get back to his feet but Hofmann is in a dominant position and won't allow it.
Hofmann controls from within his opponent's guard.
Hofmann is a painfully thin specimen of a man. You do wonder whether a good body kick would snap him clean in two.
Buffel seems keen to control Hofmann's posture.

Buffel not looking particularly offensive just at the moment.
Buffel wants to stand and escape but Hofmann is having none of it.

The referee has motioned to the fighters to stand back up. He just wasn't happy with the level of activity.
A really sloppy takedown attempt there from Hofmann.
It looked like Buffel was looking amped, ready to throw a big counter but didn't commit.
Thomas Buffel has stuffed three takedown attempts in the round now. That's going to take a lot out of Todd Hofmann.

Hofmann darts in and clinches Buffel up against the cage.
Hofmann is trying to pull guard but Buffel turns him against the cage and we stay in the clinch.
Hofmann jumps guard but Buffel turns him against the cage and keeps the fight standing.
Buffel's corner are urging him to control the action in the clinch for a moment, rather than mount any serious offense. I'm sure the crowd appreciate those instructions... not.

The crowd are getting on the fighters' backs, as the pace has dropped off in the last minute or so.
Buffel prevents Hofmann from breaking the clinch.
Hofmann content to slow the pace in the clinch.
Hofmann throws a nice elbow but it doesn't land.
Buffel tries a knee to the head but Hofmann blocks it.
Buffel pushes Hofmann back against the cage and unloads with a body punch.
Boooooooooooooooooooo!!! God, this has been a terrible round. Come on you two, sort yourselves out!
Hofmann swings away with an uppercut that misses.

Hofmann gets control of Buffel's arms and successfully pulls guard. Hofmann will no doubt be looking for submissions off his back.
The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing.
Buffel throws a big right hand that misses.
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

Todd Hofmann dominated that round.
That's the end of the round. The referee orders the cornermen out of the cage so we can get back down to business.



Hofmann clinches up with Buffel and pushes him back against the cage.

Buffel throws an elbow that misses.
Hofmann is working for a takedown up against the cage. He can't get it on this occasion though.
Buffel can't find room to land a body shot as Hofmann controls the action.

Hofmann rushes Buffel and presses him up against the cage.

Buffel is looking to score with knees to the body. Maybe he'll change it up and go body then head. Hofmann is defending well for now.
Buffel works on Hofmann's body with a couple of short punches.
Hofmann tries to pull guard but Buffel holds him up against the cage and eventually Hofmann drops back down to his feet.

Buffel tries to land knees in the clinch but Hofmann avoids the damage to the body.
Hofmann has hold of a leg and is looking for a trip takedown. Buffel avoids it nicely though and we remain in the clinch.
Hofmann wants to break free. God knows he wants to breaaaak freeee.
Buffel wants to stall.
Buffel lands a right hand.

Hofmann wants a takedown but no success here.

Hofmann escapes the clinch and we're back to striking.
A telegraphed takedown attempt from Hofmann is defended easily by Buffel.
Hofmann throws a wild combination but nothing lands.
Hofmann dives in for a single leg takedown but Buffel sprawls and the fighters end up clinched against the cage.
Buffel seem to be loading up, looking for a big counter.
Buffel leaves Hofmann with his face pressed against the mat as he sprawls beautifully, defending against a solid takedown attempt.

Hofmann fails with a takedown attempt.
Buffel throws a big counter combination but Hofmann scrambles out of danger and avoids any damage.
Hofmann is breathing heavily.
Hofmann shoots in for a takedown but doesn't get it.
Buffel doesn't react quick enough there as he takes a shot to the body.

Hofmann is looking for a takedown here. He's shot in and has managed to get it, finishing up in Buffel's half guard.
Todd Hofmann has got the better of the ground game so far.
Buffel is trying to stand.
Buffel tries to get to full guard but Hofmann has control of the leg.

Buffel moves into full guard.
Buffel is avoiding any damage by keeping wrist control.
Buffel looking to sweep here. No luck so far.
Buffel has Hofmann pulled in close to control his posture.

That was a close second round but I would say that Thomas Buffel will probably get the nod.
The minute break is over - no more time for sponges and pep talks - back to the action! Let's hear some noise people - this is the final round!

Buffel wanted to stand there but Hofmann had control of the position.

Buffel sneaks a leg through and gets to half guard. That was like a knife through butter how easily he passed Hofmann's guard.

Buffel is trying for a guillotine from the top but the pressure isn't in the right place so Hofmann is just riding it out for now. Buffel eventually gives up the hold.
Buffel wants to pass the guard but Hofmann is defending well.
Hofmann is not content to let Buffel control the position.
Buffel seems content to maintain position for now, rather than mounting any offense.

Neither fighter has done anything of merit for a good minute or two here and the crowd are not happy about it.
Buffel wants to take a breather but Hofmann is having none of it.
Hofmann is trying to get back to full guard.
Hofmann won't allow Buffel to pass to mount.
Buffel is looking to take a break and control but Hofmann is keeping him honest, looking to work from the bottom.

Buffel is looking for a kimura but Hofmann is holding onto that half guard position, so it's hard for Buffel to get the leverage.

That's three minutes gone in the round.
Buffel tries to stand but can't do so whilst Hofmann controls his leg.
Well, if Buffel is going to just lie there, perhaps we should talk about what we're having for dinner tonight… I'm having a ham and pineapple pizza… Yum. Can't wait.

The referee decides to stand the fighters back up.
Hofmann throws a looping left and ducks down for a takedown. He's got his arms around Buffel's waist but Buffel gets an underhook and avoids the takedown by throwing Hofmann off to one side.
Buffel is looking for a counter combo.

Hofmann looks for a takedown but Buffel sprawls well.
Buffel uses some good footwork to avoid the body shot by Hofmann.
Buffel wants to take advantage of his opponent's missed offense by moving into the clinch.
Hofmann shoots in for a takedown - he's clinched up with Buffel but Buffel pushes him off and we're back to square one.
Buffel seem to be loading up, looking for a big counter.
Hofmann takes a big intake of breath there - he's definitely tired.

The crowd are showing their displeasure at the lack of action as loud boos ring out around the arena.

Hofmann moves into the clinch.
Buffel misses the knee to the body. Nice hip positioning from Hofmann.

Hofmann fails to pull the fight into his guard.
Hofmann tries to take the fight to the ground by pulling guard but can't manage it.

Thomas Buffel showed his dominance in that final round.
I think Buffel has won this one but let's see what the judges have to say. Over to the ring announcer for the scorecards.
