The judges for this bout are Tiny Johnson, George Francis and Chris Downing.
The bell rings for round one and we are underway!
Gates goes for a spinning back kick but it misses.
Gates shoots in for a takedown and gets it. Let's see what he's got on the mat.
Deleon wants to sweep but no luck.
Deleon has his foot on Gates's thigh. He's trying to push off and get in position for a triangle, I think. Gates works his way back into a safe position though.
A real slowdown in the pace of the fight for a moment, as Deleon holds on and takes a little breather.

Deleon is working actively off his back, looking to secure an arm or perhaps work for a triangle.
Gates gets to his feet and steps away from his opponent.
Deleon could do with losing a few pounds - he looks very soft around the mid section, to put it politely.
We've had a slow start to the round here - hopefully the action picks up.
Gates closes the distance looking to clinch
and Deleon counters with a takedown into side control.
Gates regains half guard.

Deleon is trying to work for a kimura but Gates is defending well.
Gates moves his hips nicely and gets into full guard.
Gates looking to sweep here. No luck so far.
Gates is persisting with the attempt to improve his position.
Deleon avoids a guillotine attempt easily.
Deleon wants to get up but he can't break Gates's closed guard. He needs to be careful trying to break the legs open, as he's open to submissions here.

Deleon wants to stand up, so he's looking to wriggle free of Gates's closed guard. He's half up but Gates has locked on to an arm! Uh oh! Gates pivots and extends the arm, Deleon falls face first to the mat and taps??... does he?? YES! He's tapping! Excellent counter grappling there by Gates! Well done that man!
