Coming up we have a middleweight MMA rules bout between Billy Smith (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class) and Mike Merengue (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class). Merengue has chosen Flood of Red - Dont Sleep, Swim. as his entrance music. These two fighters really are very evenly matched on the feet - it will be fascinating to see who can assert themselves in that aspect of the fight.

The bell rings for round one and we are underway!
Smith avoids the head kick by Merengue.
Merengue stuffs the takedown.
Merengue tries a switch kick but it misses it's target.

Smith scores a takedown into full mount!
Smith misses with a head shot.
Smith looking to ground and pound but Merengue is blocking nicely.
Smith avoids the attempt from Merengue to control.
Smith throws an elbow from mount that misses. Lucky escape for Merengue because Smith loaded up on that one.
Merengue is in a horrible position here, under a barrage of strikes, he's managing to avoid any damage.
Merengue is looking to improve his position but Smith isn't that keen on the idea.

It looks like Mike Merengue has been cut.
Merengue is desperately trying to improve his position but Smith has a good base and remains in mount.
Merengue is squirming around, avoiding Smith's attempts to control the action.

Merengue tries to lock up and control but Smith gives him a forearm to the face and pushes him away.
Merengue looks out of his depth in this position - he's holding on tight.
Smith thuds his fist into the canvas! Oooouch!

Neither fighter has done anything of merit for a good minute or two here and the crowd are not happy about it.
Smith postures up and cracks his opponent a couple of times before moving back into close ground control. Merengue looks a forlorn figure.
Merengue is not a happy chappy… he wants out of there.
Poor strikes thrown by Smith there. More accuracy and less frantic strikes would help!
Merengue gets back to half guard.
Smith with the ground and pound but Merengue uses the opportunity to regain guard.
Smith is in close to Merengue's body, working some short punches and elbows.

The corners get their ten second warning. Both fighters stand from their stools and stare eachother down, ready to get back to the action.

Merengue connects with a lovely right hand, straight down the pipe.

Smith is thwarting Merengue's attempts to control the position.

The crowd are hurling abuse towards the fighters... You can hardly blame them though because there isn't a lot going on in the fight.
Smith wants to control from the top but Merengue keeps moving.

Neither fighter is doing enough for the referee's liking and he's decided to stand them back up.
Merengue throws a head kick that misses and slips in the process. He scrambles back to his feet and the fighters circle.
Smith tries to shoot in for a takedown. He's got hold of a leg but Merengue swivels and escapes.
Smith fails to land the takedown.
Smith fails miserably with a takedown attempt.
That's three failed takedown attempts in the round for Billy Smith. That's going to take a lot out of him.
Merengue throws a body kick that sends a sickening thudding noise reverberating around the arena.
Both fighters are absolutely exhausted here.

A head kick lands from Merengue that sends Smith to the canvas. Smith tries to scramble back to his feet but Merengue brings him back down into side control.

Smith is rocked!

It looks like Billy Smith has been cut.
This is a great period of action - very entertaining stuff!
A bit of a lull in the action. I'm sure it will pick up again soon... even if the ref has to physically pick them up and put them back on their feet.
Oh Smith is still in real trouble! Will he be able to recover?!!
Let's hope that Merengue has the urge to step up the pace any second now because for the last 15 or 20 seconds he's just been holding on tight.
Smith seems to have got his legs back now.

Merengue decides to take the fight back to the feet.
Merengue tries a switch kick but it misses it's target.
Smith moves out of range of the strikes.
Merengue misses with a head kick.
Smith shoots in with a takedown attempt and he has Merengue pinned against the cage. Merengue gets the underhooks and manages to circle away.
As the round comes to an end the crowd are showing their appreciation for a great round of action.

And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

Mike Merengue showed his class in that round. I'd imagine he'll take it on all the scorecards.

Horrible takedown by Smith or perhaps it was just good defense by Merengue which made him look bad.

Smith swats away the attempt to clinch by Merengue.
Smith takes a nasty kick to the mid section... That should keep him thinking. Does he try and block and risk a head kick landing?
That's a knee to de groin and it's over and out! Smith crumples to the ground after an illegal strike from Merengue - the referee stops the clock and Smith gets 5 minutes to recover from that one. "I'm sorry" says Merengue. Smith manages to get back to his feet and the fight resumes.

Smith avoids a lazy jab quite easily.
Smith shoots in for a takedown - he's clinched up with Merengue but Merengue pushes him off and we're back to square one.
