PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a featherweight MMA rules bout between Alex Rivera (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class) and Cale Downes (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class). Well, the cameraman is lingering on a pretty young lady for a bit too long there. Keep your eyes on the prize buddy or you'll miss the fighter intros!

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the featherweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 2 - 2 - 0, fighting out of Rio de Janeiro, Alex Rivera!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 7 - 9 - 0, fighting out of Rio de Janeiro, Cale Downes!
The judges for this bout are Edson Gomes, Thiago Cunha and Mauricio Rocha.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!
Downes shoots in but Rivera avoids the takedown attempt easily.
Rivera tries a head kick but it misses.
Rivera looking to land some kicks to the body here.

Rivera dodges the punch combination from Downes.
Downes closes this distance looking for a takedown but Rivera circles away.

Downes clinches up with Rivera and pushes him back against the cage.
Rivera drops down looking for an ankle pick but Downes pulls his leg out and moves away.
We've had a slow start to the round here - hopefully the action picks up.

Rivera forces Downes back against the cage and clinches.

Downes breaks the clinch and we return to the middle of the mat.

Rivera darts in and clinches Downes up against the cage.

Rivera wants to take the fight to the mat but Downes manages to get underhooks and keep the fight in the clinch.

That's three failed takedown attempts in the round for Alex Rivera. That's going to take a lot out of him.

Rivera avoiding any damage from the ground and pound.
A big thud reverberates around the arena there as Downes accidentally thumps the mat. Hopefully he's not broken his hand.

Downes has the superior BJJ but he's also working some ground strikes into his gameplan.
Downes with a couple of shots to the head there. Not particularly brutal.
Rivera looking to hit a scissor sweep but Downes is one step ahead there.

Downes stands up and beckons Rivera to join him on the feet.
Downes with a poor takedown
and Rivera counters with a quick right hand to the jaw.
Downes closes the distance and clinches up with Rivera, looking for a takedown. Downes pushes Rivera against the cage but Rivera circles to the side and manages to break the clinch.

Rivera shoots in from a long way out. He's driving through with the takedown attempt and he eventually gets it, landing in Downes's guard.

Downes is scooting his butt against the cage and has managed to get back to his feet. Rivera presses him back against the cage, presumably looking to take the fight back to the mat.
Downes wants to break the clinch but can't.

Downes's corner calls for him to break the clinch, which he does.
Rivera misses with a two punch combination.
Rivera throws an ugly left hook that misses

and Downes counters with a nice double leg into guard.
Wooooo! Give it up for these two warriors! They are putting on a show!
Downes passes easily into side control. Nice work.
Rivera knows he needs to get back to his feet asap. He's simply no match for Downes on the ground.
The fighters are starting to get a bit slippery now, which will make submissions a bit more difficult.
Rivera is trying to improve his position.
The fighters are pressed up against the cage, both looking to find a bit of space to work.

Downes trying to control the action but Rivera is working from the bottom.
Check out the look on Downes's face as he threw that strike - that's one determined fighter!
Rivera is looking to work his way out of this bad position but Downes is controlling him well.

Downes cracks Rivera with a big elbow.
Downes is working Rivera over with some ground and pound from side control.
Rivera on his back here. We all know that wrestlers don't like being on their back so let's see if Rivera tries to get out of the position.

Downes works a knee to the body and follows up with a nice elbow to the head.
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

Cale Downes dominated that round.
That's the end of the interval. I'm sure that seemed a lot quicker than a minute for our two fighters! Back to the action.


Downes bobs and weaves and then throws a good body kick.

and Rivera counters with a straight right hand.

Downes is looking for a takedown here. He's shot in and has managed to get it, finishing up in Rivera's half guard.
Rivera is trying to control but can't.
Rivera tries to get to full guard but Downes has control of the leg.

Downes is sneakily working for an arm triangle but Rivera sees it coming and defends easily.

Rivera is desperately trying to improve his position but Downes has a good base and remains in mount.

Rivera is squirming around, avoiding Downes's attempts to control the action.

Rivera is flailing around, obviously not happy about being mounted. Downes locks hold of one of his arms and spins for an armbar. He's got it! Rivera is forced to tap!
