PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a middleweight MMA rules bout between Gregory Scarpa (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class) and Genghis Khan (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class). Khan has chosen Nirvana - The Man Who Sold the World as his entrance music, which hasn't gone down very well with the crowd. These two fighters really are very evenly matched on the feet - it will be fascinating to see who can assert themselves in that aspect of the fight.

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 2 rounds, in the middleweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 13 - 12 - 0, fighting out of Sydney, Gregory Scarpa!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 19 - 14 - 0, fighting out of Las Vegas, Genghis Khan!
The judges for this bout are Hugh Johnson, Donatello Bradman and Topper Green.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!
Scarpa looks for a takedown here. Will he get it? Khan is fending him off so far but Scarpa persists. Nope, Khan circles away and we're back to standing.
Scarpa slips a straight right by Khan.
Scarpa throws a solid leg kick but Khan takes the impact on his shin and smiles at Scarpa.
Khan scores with a straight right hand, right through his opponent's guard.
Khan is moving around nicely and scores here with a single head shot.
A big left from Khan misses.
Scarpa dances in quickly and lands a nice inside leg kick on Khan. That did some damage!
Scarpa scores with a body shot.

Khan gets caught napping as Scarpa dives in and scores a takedown. Khan manages to retain guard.

Scarpa wants to control from the top but Khan keeps moving.

Scarpa throwing elbows and punches but not connecting, as Khan works some decent striking defense from the bottom.
Scarpa stands up and looks to throw the legs aside to pass to side control. Khan swivels though and keeps the full guard.
Scarpa wants to control from the top but Khan keeps moving.

The referee decides to stand the fighters back up.
Scarpa wants to slow Khan down by chopping away at his legs.

Neither fighter has done anything of merit for a good minute or two here and the crowd are not happy about it.
Scarpa shoots in for a takedown but doesn't get it.
A telegraphed takedown attempt from Scarpa is defended easily by Khan.
That's three failed takedown attempts in the round for Gregory Scarpa. That's going to take a lot out of him.
Khan jabbing away but nothing is landing.

Khan drives through and clinches with Scarpa against the ropes.
Khan tried to land a shot to the body but connects with Scarpa's elbow.
Khan blocks a punch to the side of the head.
A head punch blocked on the inside by Scarpa.
Khan goes for a body shot but it's blocked.
Scarpa wants to take the fight to the mat but Khan manages to get underhooks and keep the fight in the clinch.
Scarpa definitely looks more muscular than last time we saw him fight.
Khan gets double underhooks to prevent a takedown attempt from Scarpa.
Scarpa misses with the head strike.
Scarpa blocks a punch to the side of the head.
Scarpa lands a shoulder strike.

Khan gets through Scarpa's defenses to land a nice punch to the side of the head.
A short right hand to the side of the head by Scarpa.
Khan is defending well against a takedown attempt.
Scarpa misses with a hook from the clinch.
Khan tries a body shot but Scarpa blocks it.
An uppercut on the inside fails to land for Khan.

Scarpa has double underhooks and is working for a body lock takedown. He's got it. The fighters land in half guard but Khan regains guard immediately.

Scarpa will need to keep those long limbs tucked in whilst he's on the ground, to prevent any submissions.
The fighters are starting to get a bit slippery now, which will make submissions a bit more difficult.

Scarpa tries to free his leg and advance position but Khan is retaining full guard.
Khan looking to sweep here. No luck so far.

Scarpa postures up as if he's going to throw some strikes but drops back for an ankle! Khan is in big trouble! He looks ready to tap! But no, he's escaped and dives on top of Scarpa, into his guard.


Scarpa is looking for a triangle but Khan pushes his legs off easily.

Scarpa looking for submissions from the bottom but instead Khan passes into side control.

Khan is looking to take a break and control but Scarpa is keeping him honest, looking to work from the bottom.
Scarpa tries to buck Khan off but Khan is having none of it.
Scarpa is working hard here to advance position.
Khan just content to control the position.
Scarpa manages to get one leg in to regain half guard.
Khan not doing much here.

My god... these two guys really need to pick up the pace or everyone will leave to go get a beer.

Scarpa actively working from the bottom here.
The fighters are tangled up in the ropes here. We might need a restart if the fighters can't break free themselves.

Scarpa is looking to sinch up a guillotine here but Khan pulls his head out easily.
Scarpa is in trouble now - Khan has advanced to mount!
Scarpa is wriggling around trying to escape.
Scarpa flailing away with punches but nothing is landing.

Scarpa can't escape the position.
Scarpa is squirming around, avoiding Khan's attempts to control the action.
Khan controlling the pace for now.

A few boos can be heard. I'm sure they will multiply if the fighters don't pick up the pace.
Khan trying to control but he's not successful this time.
Khan controlling the pace for now.
Scarpa swinging wildly from the bottom but he's not landing.
Khan can't quite control the action as he would like just now, as Scarpa is looking to escape.
Scarpa throwing hammer fists to the chest of Khan. What's that going to do exactly?
Khan tries to control but Scarpa wriggling away.

Khan tucks in and makes sure he doesn't lose the dominant position.
The fighters are trapped in the ropes so we're going to have a reposition here. The ref calls for a break and repositions the fighters in the center of the ring.
Scarpa is trying desperately to improve position.
Scarpa is squirming around, avoiding Khan's attempts to control the action.
Boooooooooooooooooooo!!! God, this has been a terrible round. Come on you two, sort yourselves out!
Scarpa tries to lock up and control but Khan gives him a forearm to the face and pushes him away.
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

Genghis Khan dominated that round.
That's the end of the interval. I'm sure that seemed a lot quicker than a minute for our two fighters! Back to the action. This is the final round!

Scarpa looking for submissions from the bottom here. Moving his hips around, possibly looking for an armbar.
We've had a slow start to the round here - hopefully the action picks up.
Khan engaging in some classic timewasting tactics.
Let's hope that Khan has the urge to step up the pace any second now because for the last 15 or 20 seconds he's just been holding on tight.

Scarpa has a loose triangle. He'll be looking to tighten that up but Khan can see exactly what he's planning and manages to posture up and free himself.
Khan controls the pace of the fight for a moment.

Scarpa looking for subs off his back but Khan has passed one foot through into half guard.

Well. There's a bit of a lull in the action here and the crowd are starting to get restless.

Khan looks over to his corner - he wants some instructions but his corner are not responding.
Khan is trying to control. Scarpa wants to improve his position but can't escape this time.

Khan drops an elbow to the side of Scarpa's head.
Scarpa wants to get back to full guard.

The referee has decided to stand the fighters back up, so we'll restart on the feet.
Scarpa waving his hands out in front of him, looking to distract Khan.

Scarpa looks for a takedown but Khan sprawls well.

Scarpa tries to score a power double leg takedown but Khan sees that one coming and sprawls well. That will dishearten Scarpa somewhat.

Khan looking to throw a kick but he's pulled out of it.
Scarpa shoots in looking for a double leg takedown. Khan defends it nicely.
Khan now looks to counter with a shot at the body.
Khan throws a series of punches but Scarpa avoids them all with ease.
Scarpa shoots in for a takedown but doesn't get it.
Khan wants to counter the offense by Scarpa and move into the clinch position.
Scarpa swings wildly with a right hand that was never going to find it's target.
A nice side step and Khan releases a counter shot to the body, but it doesn't find it's home.
Khan lands a really nice looking cross but Scarpa seems unphased.
Scarpa ducks under an overhand right and circles away with a smile on his face.

The crowd cheering loudly, showing their appreciation for the quality fight we're seeing here.
Scarpa doesn't succeed with the takedown
and Khan cracks him with a counter punch right on the button.
Both fighters are absolutely exhausted here.

Scarpa shoots in looking for a takedown. Khan tries to sprawl out of it but Scarpa keeps driving through. The fighters are pinned against the ropes. Khan manages to get underhooks and after a bit of a struggle, circles away and we're back to standing.
Khan keeps the fight standing with a nice sprawl.
Scarpa changes levels and looks for a double leg takedown. Khan tries to avoid it but Scarpa manages to keep hold of a leg and drag Khan to the ground. Khan escapes though and pops straight back up to his feet.
Khan is clearly trying to counter these attacks from Scarpa with a body shot.
Khan misses the jab.
Scarpa takes a shot right to the bread basket.
Khan moves out of range as Scarpa throws a body kick.
Scarpa slips a jab from Khan.
Khan stuns Scarpa with a nice body shot, before stepping back out of range.
Khan feints and then cracks Scarpa's leading leg with a nice low kick. He's obviously looking to slow Scarpa down.

Khan misses the jab.
Scarpa takes one to the chin there.
Nice sprawl there from Khan as Scarpa shoots in.
Scarpa shoots in looking for a takedown but Khan manages to keep the fight standing, pushing Scarpa's face into the canvas for good measure before circling away.
Gregory Scarpa seems to be the more aggressive standup fighter in this bout.
Scarpa gets his takedown attempt stuffed easily
and Khan makes him pay by landing a nice hook to the body before moving out of range.
Khan connects with a body shot.
The crowd are loving this. Great action here.

Khan has been the more effective fighter overall so far.

Scarpa is desperately trying to get back to half guard.

Genghis Khan is fighting for a decision here - he's started to take the cautious approach.
Khan might have to switch it up a bit here because his efforts to control Scarpa haven't been going to plan, at least at the current moment in time.

Khan takes a little breather and maintains the position. The referee will be looking for him to stay active from such a dominant position though.

Genghis Khan comfortably won the final round on my scorecard.
Well Khan has outworked and out performed his opponent in all aspects of the game today. He was simply too good and the decision should be no more than a formality. Over to the ring announcer for the scorecards.

After winning the bout, Genghis Khan thanked all his fans and promised he'd do even better in his next fight. The crowd seemed to love his humility.
