PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a super heavyweight MMA rules bout between Manuel Anjos (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class) and Maximus Meridius (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class). Anjos's entrance music is Round One. A fine choice. These two fighters really are very evenly matched on the feet - it will be fascinating to see who can assert themselves in that aspect of the fight.

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 2 rounds, in the super heavyweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 3 - 0 - 0, fighting out of Rio de Janeiro, Manuel Anjos!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 10 - 7 - 0, fighting out of Rio de Janeiro, Maximus Meridius!
The judges for this bout are Matheus Silva, Mauricio Rocha and Leandro Rodrigues.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!
Meridius defends well against a solid takedown attempt from Anjos.

Meridius gets in close and instigates a clinch.

Anjos is trying to trip Meridius. He has hold of a leg but Meridius is hopping around, keeping his balance for the moment. Anjos persists though and gets the takedown into guard.
The fighters are trapped in the ropes so we're going to have a reposition here. The ref calls for a break and repositions the fighters in the center of the ring.

Meridius had isolated an arm as going for a kimura. Anjos defends it easily.
Meridius tries to land a sweep but no joy.
Anjos working from the guard for now, landing some ground and pound.

Meridius is trying to control the position from the bottom.
Anjos trying to control but Meridius is working from the bottom.
We've had a slow start to the round here - hopefully the action picks up.

Meridius is throwing his legs up, looking for submissions. Anjos is aware though and is defending well.

Meridius looking for submissions from the bottom here. Moving his hips around, possibly looking for an armbar.
Anjos has to be careful here, sitting in the guard of a superior BJJ player.

Meridius escapes his hips to the side and looks to be working for an armbar. Anjos gives him a little smile and shakes his head. No chance.

Meridius looking for submissions off his back, moving his hips, looking for an opening.

Meridius has a loose triangle. He'll be looking to tighten that up but Anjos can see exactly what he's planning and manages to posture up and free himself.
Anjos pressing down on his opponent's thigh, looking to pass guard. Meridius is keeping the position for now.
Meridius has been taking part in the yoga sessions down at Animal House. Presumably he's going to look for a slick submission... Or maybe he's looking to avoid one.
Anjos throwing strikes but missing.
Meridius looking to sweep using the butterfly guard but Anjos puts pay to that idea as he passes nicely into half guard.
Anjos wants to free his trapped foot but Meridius is holding on for dear life with his legs.
Anjos prevents Meridius from improving his position.
Anjos definitely looks more muscular than last time we saw him fight.

Meridius trying to hold on to Anjos's head to control him but Anjos postures up.
Still in half guard, Anjos seems content to control.
Anjos is just content to waste time from the top position. Meridius takes advantage of the situation and regains full guard.

Meridius pulls Anjos in close to prevent any damage.
Meridius wants to sweep here but Anjos controlling him for the moment.
Anjos trying to land body shots but he keeps hitting the mat.
Meridius looking for a sweep. Not yet Meridius, not yet.
Meridius is avoiding any damage by keeping wrist control.

Meridius is actively looking for submissions from his back. He's worked himself a little space on the bottom and seems to be going for a triangle. No, he's switched into an armbar! That was slick! Anjos rolls with it to try and escape but Meridius cranks on the arm and Anjos is forced to tap out! This one is aaaaaaaaall over!

Ladies and gentlemen, after 3:19 of round 1, we have a winner by way of Submission (Armbar). Maximus Meridius!
An intense looking Maximus Meridius took to the microphone post fight and gave a little speech: 'Are you entertained? Are you not entertained?!?!?'.
Manuel Anjos was interviewed post fight and said 'Shit happens, i failed training and i paid the price inside the octagon. Now we'll focus on the next fight.'.
