PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a heavyweight MMA rules bout between William Lewis (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class) and Shane Carwin (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class). Carwin has a pretty significant injury - he really shouldn't be fighting right now but he's a warrior and he's here none the less! Well, I have no idea who's going to take this one!

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the heavyweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 0 - 0 - 0, fighting out of New York, William Lewis!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 1 - 1 - 0, fighting out of New York, Shane Carwin!
The judges for this bout are David Schapiro, Jorge Garcia and Dean Styles.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!
Lewis shoots in but Carwin avoids the takedown attempt easily.
Lewis moves out of range as Carwin strikes.
Carwin looks gassed!
Carwin throws a lazy right hand but Lewis sees it coming a mile off and sidesteps it easily.
Some wild striking there from Carwin.

Lewis looks for a takedown. He's got it. We're now in half guard.
Lewis is tying to control. Carwin wants to improve his position but can't escape this time.

Lewis stands up from half guard... He's had enough of that ground malarky for the time being.
Lewis throws a looping left and ducks down for a takedown. He's got his arms around Carwin's waist but Carwin gets an underhook and avoids the takedown by throwing Lewis off to one side.

Lewis darts in and clinches Carwin up against the cage.

Lewis has picked Carwin up - he's going for a ride! Lewis dumps his opponent to the mat with a thud and settles into half guard.
The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing.

That's one minute gone in the round.
Lewis content to sit in half guard and control for a moment.
Lewis is looking to pass the guard... He's managed it - he's now in full mount!
Carwin is controlling an arm, preventing Lewis from taking his back. Although keeping him in mount is no better to be honest.
Lewis lands a big elbow.
Lewis cracks Carwin with a nasty head shot there - the crowd let out an audible gasp there, as the noise reverberated around the arena.

Lewis has control of Carwin's right arm, working for a kimura. It's a bit of a token attempt though and Carwin regains control of the situation pretty easily.

Lewis looking for an armbar but decides to keep the dominant position instead.

That's two minutes gone in the round.
Carwin in a bad spot here, taking shots to the head.

Lewis wants to finish this one by submission but Carwin is holding onto his waist, trying to prevent any attacks from Lewis.
Carwin blocking the ground and pound.
Lewis can't quite control the action as he would like just now, as Carwin is looking to escape.

The fighters are starting to get a bit slippery now, which will make submissions a bit more difficult.
Lewis goes for an armbar but he's fallen flat on his backside there and now Carwin is on top in guard.

Carwin wants to stand but Lewis has a closed guard, so he can't escape.
Carwin must be cautious of submissions here, given that his opponent has the superior Jiu Jitsu.

Carwin avoids a guillotine attempt easily.

The crowd are showing their displeasure at the lack of action as loud boos ring out around the arena.
Lewis trying to strike off his back.

Lewis working for submissions but it's allowed Carwin to get to half guard.
Lewis has been looking to land a fair amount of strikes on the ground. He might be looking to soften his opponent up in order to work for a submission.
Carwin tries to stand but can't do so whilst Lewis controls his leg.
Lewis is looking to regain full guard. Not this time though.
Lewis manages to get to full guard.
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

William Lewis dominated that round.
The corners get their ten second warning. Both fighters stand from their stools and stare eachother down, ready to get back to the action.


Carwin with a lazy takedown attempt

and Lewis counters with a takedown into side control.
Lewis tries to land with some ground and pound but misses.
Lewis working the ground and pound but he's contacting the mat, not the fighter.

Lewis thinks about going for a far side armbar but bails out and retains the dominant position instead.
Lewis tries to advance to mount but Carwin instead regains half guard.
Lewis is just content to waste time from the top position. Carwin takes advantage of the situation and regains full guard.

Carwin uses the cage to get back to his feet.
Both fighters are absolutely exhausted here.

Carwin instigates a clinch.
Lewis really is a fat lump.
Lewis is looking for a takedown up against the cage. Carwin gets underhooks though and prevents the takedown attempt.
Carwin is looking to break free of the clinch but Lewis has double underhooks.
Lewis fails to pull guard.
Lewis tries to pull guard but can't drag his opponent to the mat. Carwin just stands there and leans against the cage.
That's three failed takedown attempts in the round for William Lewis. That's going to take a lot out of him.
Carwin is trying to break free.
Lewis drops down for a takedown but doesn't get it.

That's two minutes gone in the round.
The crowd are starting to boo a lack of action.
Carwin is trying to break free.

Lewis gets a trip takedown into half guard.
Lewis wants to lay and pray for a moment but Carwin keeps working.
Lewis is looking to advance position but Carwin won't allow it.
Carwin is refusing to be controlled, as Lewis sits in half guard.
Carwin keeping his head moving to avoid the ground and pound.

That's three minutes gone in the round.
Lewis trying to control from Carwin's half guard. Carwin has other ideas though and has regained full guard.
Lewis postures up in Carwin's guard and throws a big left but Carwin blocks it.
Lewis wants to control from the top but Carwin keeps moving.
Carwin wants to stand and escape but Lewis is having none of it.

Well, the referee has seen enough. Neither fighter is active enough on the ground so he's stood them back up.

Lewis has managed to clinch.
Lewis tries for a takedown but Carwin manages to get underhooks.
Both fighters working to control the clinch.

That's four minutes gone in the round.
There's not a lot going on here and the crowd are letting the fighters know they're not willing to tolerate a lack of action.
Carwin gets underhooks to prevent Lewis's takedown attempt.
Lewis tries to throw a body punch but Carwin avoids it by throwing Lewis back against the cage.
Carwin wants to break free. God knows he wants to breaaaak freeee.
Lewis has hold of a leg and is looking for a trip takedown. Carwin avoids it nicely though and we remain in the clinch.
Lewis goes for a takedown attempt but Carwin pushes him away and we're back to fighting at a distance.
Lewis misses with a takedown attempt. He shot from a bit too far out.
A telegraphed right hand from Carwin misses the target.
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

William Lewis dominated that second round.
That's time! Back to the action! This is the final round!



Lewis darts in and lands a nice takedown into half guard.
Lewis frees up his trapped foot and advances to mount.
Lewis looking to ground and pound his opponent to a finish here.

Lewis is in full mount, looking to secure a guillotine but Carwin is surviving well by controlling Lewis's body position as best he can.
Carwin keeping his composure momentarily, calmly looking to get back to half guard.
Both fighters are breathing heavily.

Lewis moves into side control, trying to work for a kimura. That looks painful! Will he finish!!?? No, Carwin has worked his arm free - good work by Carwin!

That's one minute gone in the round.

Lewis decides to stand back up.
Carwin thows a left - swing and a miss!
Carwin shoots and misses

and Lewis counters by moving into the clinch.
A real battle for position is taking place between these two warriors.

Lewis breaks the clinch.
Lewis moves away from the strike by Carwin.
Lewis tries for a takedown but Carwin sees it coming a mile off and avoids it easily.
Carwin shoots in but doesn't get the takedown

and Lewis counters with a driving takedown into guard. Nice work there by Lewis.

That's two minutes gone in the round.
Lewis looking to pass the guard.
Carwin working a defensive guard but Lewis passes into half guard.
Carwin is trying to stand.
William Lewis overall seems to be getting the better of the ground position in the fight so far.

Lewis is looking for a kimura here.
Lewis is trying to advance to mount but he's lost his balance and Carwin reverses the position - he's now on top in Lewis's guard.

Carwin stopping the sweep attempt from Lewis.

Lewis has an omoplata and is looking to use it perhaps as a submission or perhaps to transition. Carwin is in a bit of discomfort here, but he's managed to free himself and has dived into side control! That didn't work out too well for Lewis.

Lewis wants to get back to full guard but Carwin has mounted him!

That's four minutes gone in the round.
Well. There's a bit of a lull in the action here and the crowd are starting to get restless.

Shane Carwin has stepped it up - he knows he needs a finish here!
Lewis keeping his composure momentarily, calmly looking to get back to half guard.

William Lewis showed his dominance in that final round.
Well I reckon that's a shut out for Lewis, winning every round. Will the judges agree? They are the ones who matter, even if they are often depressingly incompetent. Over to the ring announcer for the scorecards.
