The bell rings for round one and we are underway!
Newton tries for a takedown but Cesar Chavez circles away easily
and Cesar Chavez cracks him with a counter punch right on the button.
Newton shoots in from a long way out. He's driving through with the takedown attempt and he eventually gets it, landing in Cesar Chavez 's guard.
Cesar Chavez has an omoplata and is looking to use it perhaps as a submission or perhaps to transition. Newton is in a bit of discomfort here, but he's managed to free himself and has dived into side control! That didn't work out too well for Cesar Chavez .
Newton cracks Cesar Chavez with an elbow. That is naaassty.
Newton moving around in side mount but really he's just happy to control for now.
The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing.
Cesar Chavez is working to avoid the ground and pound but Newton connects with a decent elbow.
Newton controls the position from side control.
We've had a slow start to the round here - hopefully the action picks up.
Newton has worked his way into a potential kimura here. Cesar Chavez is trying to get out of the position but his squirming has just got him deeper into trouble. Newton yanks on the arm and Cesar Chavez is forced to tap due to a very painful looking submission! Nice work by Newton.

Carlos Newton really struggled to get his t-shirt on before his hand was raised. Making sure that Sully's Bar & Grill logo gets some air time is pretty tricky when you're all sweaty.
