PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a bantamweight MMA rules bout between Bart Paw (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class) and Andy James (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class). I don't know about you partner, but I'm pumped for this one!

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the bantamweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 3 - 13 - 0, fighting out of The Island, Bart Paw!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 0 - 2 - 0, fighting out of The Island, Andy James!
The judges for this bout are Michael Johnstone, Peter Branson and Sandra Marshall.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!
James misses with a body kick.

Paw closes the distance and clinches.
Paw misses with a hook from the clinch.

James manages to break the clinch.
Paw tries to clinch but is not successful on this occasion.
We've been hearing reports that Paw has been drilling takedowns in recent sessions so let's see if that has an impact on the result of this fight.
Paw avoids the head kick by James.
Paw shoots in for a takedown but James shows good takedown defense there and keeps this one on the feet.
James looks frustrated there after his takedown attempt is stuffed easily.
James shoots in looking for a takedown. Paw tries to sprawl out of it but James keeps driving through. The fighters are pinned against the cage. Paw manages to get underhooks and after a bit of a struggle, circles away and we're back to standing.
We've had a slow start to the round here - hopefully the action picks up.

James instigates a clinch.

Paw trying to land knees to the body.

Paw pushes off and circles away, back to the middle of the mat.
James is looking to take this fight into the clinch.
Paw throws a lazy head kick

and James counters by clinching up.

James pulls guard effortlessly.
James bucks up whilst keeping hold of a body lock, managing to reverse the position. Now he's in top in Paw's guard.

Paw is working an open guard here, looking to improve his position. No doubt that will leave him open to counters but at least he's being more offensive.
James stays in close to Paw's body and controls the position.
Paw really does look like a pencil wearing a pair of gloves. Let's hope he has a gameplan to suit that ridiculous body shape.

That's two minutes gone in the round.
Paw is avoiding any damage by keeping wrist control.
Paw is working an open guard here, looking to improve his position. No doubt that will leave him open to counters but at least he's being more offensive.
The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing.
James slows down the pace of the fight, as he sits in guard.
James is working the ground and pound from guard. He might want to try advancing position though to get more of an impact.

That's three minutes gone in the round.
James not doing a lot at the moment. He'll have to show some more aggression or the fight will get stood up.
The fighters are pressed up against the cage, both looking to find a bit of space to work.
James advances to half guard.
James seems content to maintain position for now, rather than mounting any offense.
James uses his free foot to push down on Paw's thigh. Eventually he works his other foot free and he's advanced to mount - this is trouble for Paw.
Paw is trying desperately to improve position.
James landing punches.

That's four minutes gone in the round.
James trying to control but he's not successful this time.
Paw is wriggling around trying to escape.
Paw is squirming around, avoiding James's attempts to control the action.
James avoids the attempt from Paw to control.
Paw can't escape the position.
Boooooooooooooooooooo!!! God, this has been a terrible round. Come on you two, sort yourselves out!

James is standing up out of mount! Strange tactic there - he must really want this one on the feet!
Paw shoots in for a double leg but James sprawls well. That's going to sap some energy.
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

Andy James dominated that round.
The minute break is over - no more time for sponges and pep talks - back to the action!



James dives in and scores a takedown into Paw's guard.
James trying to control the position from guard on top but Paw is wriggling around, looking for whatever he can.

Paw is looking for a guillotine. You can't force these things though and James defends well.

Paw escapes his hips to the side and looks to be working for an armbar. James gives him a little smile and shakes his head. No chance.
Paw on his back here. We all know that wrestlers don't like being on their back so let's see if Paw tries to get out of the position.
James trying to land body shots but he keeps hitting the mat.
We've had a slow start to the round here - hopefully the action picks up.
James connects with a couple of short punches.

That's one minute gone in the round.
James stands up over Paw, holding his feet. He dives back in and lands a decent shot to the head.
Paw has momentary wrist control but James slips an elbow through the middle.

James avoids a guillotine attempt easily.
Both fighters are absolutely exhausted here.

Paw escapes his hips to the side and looks to be working for an armbar. James gives him a little smile and shakes his head. No chance.

That's two minutes gone in the round.
The crowd are hurling abuse towards the fighters... You can hardly blame them though because there isn't a lot going on in the fight.

James stands up and waves to Paw to follow him.
James dives in and grabs Paw's left leg, looking for a takedown. Paw pushes down on James's head and hops out.
Paw throwing a counter right hand but James manages to avoid it.
James walks into a left hand.
Both fighters circling a little - James finishes the exchange with a kick to the body.

James looking to shoot here. He's gone for it and he's landed a takedown into side control! Oh, that's bad for Paw!
Paw wants to get back to his feet but James is dominant here and he's now got Paw's back!
Paw knows he needs to get back to his feet asap. He's simply no match for James on the ground.
Paw is trying to remain composed but James is hammering down strikes to the side of his head.

That's three minutes gone in the round.
I would not like to be Paw right now.
James is continuing to stall.

James is looking for the choke from the back position but Paw is controlling his hands well.
Paw is trying to get back to his feet but he's not managed it yet.
Andy James has got the better of the ground game so far.

James is persistently looking for the submission but Paw is defending it well.

That's four minutes gone in the round.

James is working really hard to secure the rear naked choke. Paw defends successfully for a significant amount of time. Both fighters are looking very determined.

Paw manages to escape to his feet.
Paw throws a leg kick that is checked

and James counters with a shoot takedown into half guard.
This is a great period of action - very entertaining stuff!
James is keen to just control but Paw is a slippery customer.
James stops Paw from getting back to his feet.
Paw wants to sweep but James has passed to side control!
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

Andy James showed his class in that round. I'd imagine he'll take it on all the scorecards.
The referee calls time. The cornermen exit stage left and we're back to business. This is the final round!


James misses with a takedown attempt - Paw sprawls well and throws a nice strike on the way out which just misses.
Paw will have to do better than that with his takedown attempts.
Paw jabbing away but nothing is landing.
James is clearly looking to counter with head kicks.
James tries to drive through with a takedown attempt but Paw defends well and James ends up having to push Paw into the cage where they will battle it out in the clinch.

James clinches.
James keeps the fight in the clinch, despite Paw's efforts to push away.

James drags the fight down to the ground.

Paw is looking to stand up but James won't let him.

Both fighters are breathing heavily.

James is holding Paw down, trying to stall.
James is trying to escape and get back to his feet.
James sneaks back into half guard.
Paw looking to pass the half guard. Not this time.

That's two minutes gone in the round.
My god... these two guys really need to pick up the pace or everyone will leave to go get a beer.
Paw wants to lay and pray for a moment but James keeps working.
James wants to get back to his feet.

Paw taking a breather but there's no such thing in a fight! James has locked on to a kimura from the bottom - he uses it to sweep and is now looking to finish from the top position! He's got it! Paw has tapped! Great work by James! Lay and pray doesn't pay, kids! Just remember, you heard it here first.
