PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a welterweight MMA rules bout between Juan Sharp (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class) and Daniel Santos (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class). We have two fighters making their debuts here, so let's see who comes out of this one with their first professional victory.

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the welterweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 0 - 0 - 0, fighting out of Rio de Janeiro, Juan Sharp!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 0 - 0 - 0, fighting out of Rio de Janeiro, Daniel Santos!
The judges for this bout are Emerson Jorge, Paulo Santos and Seu Braga.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!
Sharp shoots in but no luck this time.

Santos has managed to clinch.
Sharp tries a knee to the head but Santos blocks it.
Santos keeps the fight in the clinch, despite Sharp's efforts to push away.

Sharp pushes off and circles away, back to the middle of the mat.
Sharp dives in for a single leg takedown but Santos sprawls and the fighters end up clinched against the cage.

Santos fakes an overhand right and shoots for a takedown. Sharp sprawls well initially but Santos persists and gets the takedown into half guard.

Santos decides to stand and escape the position.
We've had a slow start to the round here - hopefully the action picks up.

Santos feints and then dives in with a takedown. That was a long way out but the feint bought him enough time to close the distance and complete the takedown. Now we'll play guard for a bit and see who can get the better of that position.

Sharp kicks Santos off and gets to his feet.
Fantastic stuff here - a very entertaining period of action, which has drawn cheers from the crowd.

Sharp gets caught flat footed, as Santos shoots in with a quick takedown into guard.
Sharp wants to get back to his feet but he's too absorbed in his own little project and Santos manages to pass to side control.

Sharp is looking to improve his position.
Sharp is trying to maintain the position but Santos is very close to passing his half guard.
Sharp holds on for dear life, maintaining half guard for now.
Santos trying to pass the guard but Sharp defending well.
Sharp is concentrating on defense, preventing Santos from advancing position.

That's two minutes gone in the round.
A few boos can be heard. I'm sure they will multiply if the fighters don't pick up the pace.
Sharp avoiding damage under a succession of punches from Santos.
Sharp misses with some strikes from the bottom.
Santos wants to take a breather but Sharp is having none of it.
Well, if Santos is going to just lie there, perhaps we should talk about what we're having for dinner tonight… I'm having a ham and pineapple pizza… Yum. Can't wait.
Sharp wants to control but Santos is keeping busy.

Santos gets to his feet - back to striking we go!

Santos gets a clinch.

Santos's corner calls for him to break the clinch, which he does.

Sharp wants to control but Santos passes easily into half guard.
Sharp avoiding damage under a succession of punches from Santos.

Santos is working for submissions here but there's nothing on.
Santos is trying to control the action in half guard but Sharp is working away on the bottom, looking perhaps to get back to full guard.

Santos controlling the pace.
The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing.
Sharp looks like he's trying to stand up.
Santos passes into side control, despite Sharp's attempt to control the position.
Sharp sneaks back into half guard.
Sharp is doing well to control the position and prevent Santos from advancing to side control.
Sharp tries to get to full guard but Santos has control of the leg.
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

Daniel Santos dominated that round.
That's the end of the interval. I'm sure that seemed a lot quicker than a minute for our two fighters! Back to the action.


Sharp shoots in looking for a takedown. Santos tries to sprawl out of it but Sharp keeps driving through. The fighters are pinned against the cage. Santos manages to get underhooks and after a bit of a struggle, circles away and we're back to standing.
Santos misses with a jab, cross combination.

Santos shoots in for a takedown from distance. He catches Sharp napping and manages to drive through into side control!
Santos works to advance to full mount. Sharp defends for a few seconds but eventually he succumbs.

Santos throws a head kick but Sharp moves out of range.
A low kick from Santos misses
and Sharp counters with a straight punch to the midsection.
Santos has been the more effective fighter overall so far.

Sharp gets tackled into the cage by Santos. Santos maintains the clinch.

Santos breaks from the clinch.
Santos comes forward and lands a shot to the body, then darts back out of range.

Santos has Sharp up against the cage in a clinch.

Santos breaks the clinch and we're back to striking at distance.

Santos closes the distance, clinches up and gets a nice trip takedown into side control. Very smooth.
Santos misses with the ground and pound.
The referee tells the fighters to keep busy.
Santos misses with a strike but at least he's keeping busy, looking to cause some damage - that will still help him when it comes to the judges scorecards.
Santos tries to score with some ground and pound. Sharp controls his posture well this time though and the shots don't do any damage.

Santos tries to move to mount but Sharp blocks the move with his legs.
Santos has the superior BJJ but he's also working some ground strikes into his gameplan.

Sharp wants to control but Santos postures up.

Sharp tries to slip a leg under to move to half guard but Santos presses down on the leg and jumps into full mount!
Sharp wants to hold on but Santos pushes him away.
Both fighters are absolutely exhausted here.
Santos content just to control the position here.

Santos throwing strikes here but Sharp is writhing around nicely and avoiding any serious damage.

Daniel Santos showed his class in that round. I'd imagine he'll take it on all the scorecards.
That's time! Sharp's corner gives him a slap on the ass as he gets ready to fight. This is the final round!



Santos closes the distance and looks for a trip takedown... aaaand he's got it - Santos lands in his opponent's guard.

Santos gets to his feet. Sharp looking to butt scoot but the ref puts an end to that. On your feet son!

Santos wants to pass the guard but Sharp is keeping the position.

Sharp wants to hit a switch here but Santos passes into full mount! Oh no, disaster for Sharp there!

Sharp is in a horrible position here, under a barrage of strikes, he's managing to avoid any damage.

Sharp reaches up and holds on to Santos to control the position.

A lull in the action here being met with boos from the crowd.
Santos controlling his opponent.
Santos sends his fist crashing into the mat - the crowd let out a collective ooooooh. Let's hope he's not broken it!
Sharp really does look like a pencil wearing a pair of gloves. Let's hope he has a gameplan to suit that ridiculous body shape.
Sharp wants to control but Santos is having none of it.
Sharp is looking to improve his position but Santos isn't that keen on the idea.
Santos looking to ground and pound but Sharp is blocking nicely.

Santos is in full mount, looking to secure a guillotine but Sharp is surviving well by controlling Santos's body position as best he can.

Sharp is wriggling around trying to escape.
Santos takes a little breather and maintains the position. The referee will be looking for him to stay active from such a dominant position though.
Santos's corner are shouting for him to control the position and he seems happy to oblige.

Neither fighter has done anything of merit for a good minute or two here and the crowd are not happy about it.
Sharp's corner are shouting for him to stand up but that's bad cornering - how is he meant to stand up when he's mounted? He should be looking to improve his position on the ground before trying to stand back up.
Sharp bucks up and manages to get a nice reversal! He's in guard on the top - nicely done!
Sharp won't allow Santos to sweep him here.
Sharp will need to keep those long limbs tucked in whilst he's on the ground, to prevent any submissions.
Boooooooooooooooooooo!!! God, this has been a terrible round. Come on you two, sort yourselves out!
Sharp postures up in Santos's guard and throws a big left but Santos blocks it.
Juan Sharp has stepped it up - he knows he needs a finish here!
Daniel Santos is fighting for a decision - hopefully he's judged it right and he's actually winning the fight.
Sharp loading up with the ground and pound but he's missing more than he's landing in this flurry.

Santos working for a triangle but Sharp defends it easily.

Daniel Santos comfortably won the final round on my scorecard.
Well Santos has outworked and out performed his opponent in all aspects of the game today. He was simply too good and the decision should be no more than a formality. Over to the ring announcer for the scorecards.
