PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a heavyweight MMA rules bout between Nelson Padilla (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class) and Gary Lawler (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class). On his way into the cage it seems that Nelson Padilla has been attacked by a crazed fan! It looks like it might have been the just bleed guy! Luckily Nelson Padilla seems to be OK! I thought that lunatic was in prison!?

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the heavyweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 0 - 1 - 0, fighting out of Montreal, Nelson Padilla!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 0 - 0 - 0, fighting out of Montreal, Gary Lawler!
The judges for this bout are Yves DeLean, Elvis Blanc and Alec Ball.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!

Lawler closes the distance and gets a trip takedown into side control. Padilla quickly recovers to half guard.
Lawler takes a deep breath and rests his weight momentarily on top of his opponent, to control the position.
Padilla is looking for a sweep. Lawler is wise to his cunning plan and keeps the top position.

Lawler throws a strike but Padilla avoids it easily and moves to full guard.

Padilla looking to control the pace of the fight rather than finish it.

We've had a slow start to the round here - hopefully the action picks up.

Lawler drops back looking for a leg! Padilla is in trouble here! The fighters roll with the hold and Padilla manages to kick Lawler off! Lawler jumps back into Padilla's guard.

The referee has stepped in and called for a break in the action. We'll restart on the feet.
Padilla tries to shoot in for a takedown. He's got hold of a leg but Lawler swivels and escapes.

Lawler feints and then dives in with a takedown. That was a long way out but the feint bought him enough time to close the distance and complete the takedown. Now we'll play guard for a bit and see who can get the better of that position.

Padilla looking to sweep using the butterfly guard but Lawler puts pay to that idea as he passes nicely into half guard.
The fighters are pressed up against the cage, both looking to find a bit of space to work.

Lawler thows a huge punch but Padilla dodges it nicely.

Still in half guard, Lawler seems content to control.
Padilla really is a fat lump.
Lawler is trying to get back to his feet now but his leg is trapped.
Padilla is looking to get back to is feet but Lawler passes into side control.

Lawler swings around for an armbar but Padilla sees it coming a mile off and turns beautifully into Lawler's guard.
The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing.
Padilla with a flurry of punches that miss.
Padilla throws a big right hand that misses.
Lawler working the defensive guard well to avoid strikes from Padilla.
Lawler pulls Padilla in to control the position.
Padilla loading up with the ground and pound but he's missing more than he's landing in this flurry.

Padilla throws an elbow that misses. Lawler uses the momentum to reverse the position. He's now in Padilla's guard. Nice move by Lawler!


Lawler gets to his feet. Padilla looking to butt scoot but the ref puts an end to that. On your feet son!

Lawler closes the distance and pushes Padilla back into the cage.
Padilla is trying to break the clinch but Lawler is controlling him.
Lawler keeps the fight in the clinch, despite Padilla's efforts to push away.
Lawler keeps control of Padilla as he tries to wriggle out of the double underhooks.

Lawler misses with a knee strike.
Padilla tries to jump guard but he falls flat on his backside. Lawler smiles and moves away.

Padilla gets caught on his heels momentarily as he allows Lawler to score an easy takedown into full guard.

Lawler wanted to stand there but Padilla had control of the position.

Lawler is fighting to break Padilla's control of his arms but Padilla is doing a good job of controlling the position at the moment.
The crowd thankful this round is nearly over.

And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

The minute break is over - no more time for sponges and pep talks - back to the action!

The strikes coming from Lawler are missing the target in this wave of attacks.
We've had a slow start to the round here - hopefully the action picks up.

Lawler is staying tight to Padilla's torso, preventing him from escaping.

Padilla wants to control but Lawler postures up.
Padilla is going to have to think about doing something other than just controlling because Lawler is managing to avoid having the position dictated to him.

Lawler remains in side control and seems content to stay there. It's a versatile position from which he can work both strikes and submissions, whilst maintaining that control, so maybe he'll sit here for a while.

A few boos can be heard. I'm sure they will multiply if the fighters don't pick up the pace.

Lawler is looking for a kimura. He might have it! No, Padilla has escaped the position, nice work there.
The referee asks Lawler politely if he wouldn't mind getting on with it and actually doing something. Lawler prefers to stall for the moment though.

The referee decides to stand the fighters back up.
Padilla throws a head kick that misses and slips in the process. He scrambles back to his feet and the fighters circle.

Padilla shoots in from a long way out. He's driving through with the takedown attempt and he eventually gets it, landing in Lawler's guard.

Lawler has his feet on Padilla's hips. He pushes off and gets to his feet. Nice work.

Lawler decides to change it up a bit and drives through with a nice takedown into half guard.
Both fighters are absolutely exhausted here.

Lawler is looking to stand up but he'll have to free his leg first. Instead, Padilla manages to get to full guard.

Lawler drops back looking for a leg! Padilla is in trouble here! The fighters roll with the hold and Padilla manages to kick Lawler off! Lawler jumps back into Padilla's guard.

Lawler is intent on slowing down the pace of the fight, simply looking to control.
The referee is pacing around the two fighters - he looks like he's thinking about a standup.

The ref stands the fighters back up due to a lack of activity.
Nelson Padilla is looking to throw some combinations by the looks of things.
Boooooooooooooooooooo!!! God, this has been a terrible round. Come on you two, sort yourselves out!

Lawler feints and then dives in with a takedown. That was a long way out but the feint bought him enough time to close the distance and complete the takedown. Now we'll play guard for a bit and see who can get the better of that position.
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

Gary Lawler showed his class in that round. I'd imagine he'll take it on all the scorecards.
That's time! Back to the action! This is the final round!

Lawler creates some space and throws a big elbow, but Padilla sees it coming and moves his head just enough to avoid the strike.

Lawler decides to stand back up. Lawler steps back and let's Padilla get back to his feet.

Lawler closes the distance and after a bit of a stuggle, scores a takedown into Padilla's guard.
Padilla wants to sweep here but Lawler controlling him for the moment.

Lawler stands up from Padilla's guard - Lawler perhaps looking for a knockout.

Lawler manages to get an easy takedown there - catching Padilla on his heels. He'll look to pass Padilla's guard now, I'm sure.
Both fighters are breathing heavily.

Lawler working some ground and pound from guard but it's not doing any damage.
Lawler is intent on slowing down the pace of the fight, simply looking to control.

Lawler stands up and waves to Padilla to follow him.

Well. There's a bit of a lull in the action here and the crowd are starting to get restless.
Padilla lunges in with swinging rights and lefts but Lawler circles away quickly and effectively.
Padilla has his takedown stuffed

and Lawler counters by moving into the clinch.

Lawler has been the more effective fighter overall so far.
Lawler is pressed up against the cage. Padilla has hold of a leg and is looking to drag Lawler down to the mat. Lawler avoids the attempt though and has circled away. We're back to striking at a distance.
Padilla shoots in for a takedown but Lawler shows good takedown defense there and keeps this one on the feet.

Lawler tries for an arm triangle. That looks pretty tight to me. Is this one over!?! Possibly, maybe, no Lawler has let go of the choke. Obviously it wasn't as tight as we thought!

Lawler is looking to finish the fight by rear naked choke. Padilla knows exactly what he's got planned though, so he's defending well. Maybe a few strikes would soften Padilla for a finish.

Well Lawler has outworked and out performed his opponent in all aspects of the game today. He was simply too good and the decision should be no more than a formality. Over to the ring announcer for the scorecards.
