PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a heavyweight MMA rules bout between Anteros Kakos (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class) and Larry Southman (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class). Kakos's entrance music is You ain't stoppin me. A fine choice. Over to our ring announcer for the fighter introductions!

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the heavyweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 1 - 2 - 0, fighting out of Amsterdam, Anteros Kakos!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 0 - 0 - 0, fighting out of Amsterdam, Larry Southman!
The judges for this bout are Wagner Zegers, Radbod Blank and Nard Betker.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!
Southman misses with a low kick as Kakos jumps back.
Kakos with a poor takedown
and Southman counters with a series of strikes. Kakos will be more careful next time no doubt.
Southman lands a slapping body shot.
Kakos wants to land a leg kick but Southman is out of range.

Southman closes the distance, clinches up and gets a nice trip takedown into side control. Very smooth.

Southman is trying to get an arm triangle but Kakos is defending well.
Kakos has improved his flexibility recently so we will have to see if he can use that to his advantage.
Southman tries to get to his feet but he's trapped momentarily.
Kakos tries to improve position but can't.
Southman trying to control the position but Kakos is working away.

Southman tries for an arm triangle. That looks pretty tight to me. Is this one over!?! Possibly, maybe, no Southman has let go of the choke. Obviously it wasn't as tight as we thought!

Kakos wants to control but Southman postures up.
Southman really doesn't want to stay on the ground with Kakos. If he can't get it back to his feet, it's only a matter of time before he'll be tapping out.
Southman throwing strikes but missing, from side control.
Southman blocks the strikes from Kakos.
The fighters are pressed up against the cage, both looking to find a bit of space to work.
Southman creates some space and throws a big elbow, but Kakos sees it coming and moves his head just enough to avoid the strike.
Kakos tries to bench press Southman off him but Southman keeps the position.
Southman is looking to take a break and control but Kakos is keeping him honest, looking to work from the bottom.
We may be looking at a referee standup if the pace doesn't pick up soon.
Kakos is trying to stand back up. He's worked his way up against the cage but Southman has just dragged him back down to the mat.

The referee decides to stand the fighters back up.

That's two minutes gone in the round.
A few boos can be heard. I'm sure they will multiply if the fighters don't pick up the pace.
Kakos lunges in with swinging rights and lefts but Southman circles away quickly and effectively.

Southman gets a clinch.
Kakos trying to stall but Southman improves his position.
Southman has had enough of the clinch but Kakos keeps him there for the moment.
Come on Kakos - let's have some action - none of this stalling nonsense.
Southman dodges an elbow strike from Kakos.

Kakos breaks the clinch and we're back to striking at distance.

Southman darts in and clinches Kakos up against the cage.
Southman blocking some punches.

Kakos drags the fight down to the ground.
Southman looking to sit in guard and control but Kakos gets the butterfly guard and sweeps. He's now in the guard on the top.


That's three minutes gone in the round.
Southman is working an open guard here, looking to improve his position. No doubt that will leave him open to counters but at least he's being more offensive.
Kakos throwing elbows and punches but not connecting, as Southman works some decent striking defense from the bottom.

Southman escapes his hips to the side and looks to be working for an armbar. Kakos gives him a little smile and shakes his head. No chance.

Southman looking for a guillotine here but Kakos defends easily.
Kakos controlling from the top position.

That's four minutes gone in the round.
Neither fighter has done anything of merit for a good minute or two here and the crowd are not happy about it.
Kakos might be looking to lock onto one of his opponent's long limbs for a submission, whilst we're on the ground.
Kakos stands up and looks to throw the legs aside to pass to side control. Southman swivels though and keeps the full guard.
Southman is trying to control the position from the bottom.
A big thud reverberates around the arena there as Kakos accidentally thumps the mat. Hopefully he's not broken his hand.
The crowd thankful this round is nearly over.

Southman is looking for a triangle but Kakos pushes his legs off easily.
Southman wants to improve his position but instead Kakos has moved into half guard.
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

Larry Southman dominated that round.

Southman uses good footwork to avoid the strikes from Kakos.

Southman shoots in and bounces Kakos off the cage to secure the takedown into guard.
Southman seems content to control from guard here. He's going to have to remain active though if he doesn't want to get stood back up.
Kakos keeping moving, preventing Southman from controlling successfully.
We've had a slow start to the round here - hopefully the action picks up.
Kakos looking to hit a scissor sweep but Southman is one step ahead there.

Kakos is active off his back here, looking for submissions.

Kakos drops back looking for a leg! Southman is in trouble here! The fighters roll with the hold and Southman manages to kick Kakos off! Kakos jumps back into Southman's guard.
Southman is looking to stand up but Kakos isn't so interested in that idea.

The crowd are starting to boo a lack of action.
Southman keeping moving, preventing Kakos from controlling successfully.
Kakos postures up.

Kakos is trying to work a guillotine from the top, or something like that? Don't know how he thinks he's going to get a finish from there.
The referee wants the fighters to be more active or he's going to reset them on the feet.
Kakos trying to control the position from guard on top but Southman is wriggling around, looking for whatever he can.

The referee has stepped in and called for a break in the action. We'll restart on the feet.
A really sloppy takedown attempt there from Kakos.

Southman throws a loose over hand right and dives in with a double leg takedown. Kakos tries to sprawl but it's too late and the fighters hit the mat. Southman is in Kakos's guard.
Southman has been the more effective fighter overall so far.

Southman is looking to work some ground and pound but Kakos has wrist control.

Kakos is active off his back here, looking for submissions.
Kakos is doing well to control the posture of his opponent and prevent any damage.
A big thud reverberates around the arena there as Southman accidentally thumps the mat. Hopefully he's not broken his hand.
Southman is stalling in the full guard.

Kakos is working actively off his back, looking to secure an arm or perhaps work for a triangle.

The referee is pacing around the two fighters - he looks like he's thinking about a standup.

There's not a lot going on here and the crowd are letting the fighters know they're not willing to tolerate a lack of action.
Kakos throws some sloppy strikes off his back.

The referee decides to stand the fighters back up.
Kakos throws a leg kick but Southman sees it coming and checks it nicely.
No luck for Kakos with that takedown attempt.

Southman scores a trip takedown into side control. Nice.
Larry Southman has got the better of the ground game so far.
Boooooooooooooooooooo!!! God, this has been a terrible round. Come on you two, sort yourselves out!
Southman is maintaining the dominant position - no doubt Kakos will start to get frustrated soon if he's not already.
Kakos tries to work a leg under to get back to half guard but Southman wriggles his own leg back out and remains in side control.
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

Larry Southman showed his class in that round. I'd imagine he'll take it on all the scorecards.
The corners get their ten second warning. Both fighters stand from their stools and stare eachother down, ready to get back to the action. This is the final round!


Southman throws a combination but comes up with nothing but fresh air.
Southman avoids the body shot from Kakos.
Kakos moves out of the way of the counter high kick fromSouthman.

Southman clinches.
The pace really dropping off here, momentarily.

Kakos is fighting off a takedown attempt but Southman is just too persistent for him and manages to trip Kakos to the mat. Kakos regains guard as soon as the fighters hit the mat.

Southman decides he's had enough of playing guard and decides to stand. Come on Kakos, up you get!

Southman instigates a clinch.

Southman decides to pull guard.
Kakos slows down the pace of the fight for a moment. He'll need to remain active if he doesn't want to see the fight stood back up.

Southman is looking to get back to his feet but can't, whilst Kakos is controlling him.

The referee has decided to stand the fighters back up, so we'll restart on the feet.
Southman moves into range and connects with a jab.
Southman lands a right hook to the body.
Southman connects with a crisp jab.

Southman drives through with a takedown into Kakos's guard. Let's see what he can do from the top position.
Both fighters are breathing heavily.

Kakos doesn't do any damage with a couple of strikes from the bottom.
Kakos looking for a sweep. Not yet Kakos, not yet.
The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing.
Kakos is trying to control the position but Southman postures up.
Kakos keeping moving, preventing Southman from controlling successfully.
Anteros Kakos has stepped it up - he knows he needs a finish here!
Kakos is working from a closed guard but he's struggling to control his opponent.
Southman throws a big right hand that misses.
The referee is pacing around the two fighters - he looks like he's thinking about a standup.

The referee has motioned to the fighters to stand back up. He just wasn't happy with the level of activity.

The crowd are showing their displeasure at the lack of action as loud boos ring out around the arena.
Kakos tries to clinch up against the cage, rushing in to close the distance. Southman manages to break the clinch and circles back to the middle of the mat.
Southman throws a sloppy head kick and Kakos moves out of range easily.

Southman tries to keep at a distance but Kakos has taken the fight into the clinch.

Southman gets double underhooks and manages to take the fight to the ground.
Southman wants to control from the top but Kakos keeps moving.
Southman is taking a break and basically stalling. The referee will not allow him to do that for long.
The crowd thankful this round is nearly over.

Southman stands up from guard. Let's bang!
Larry Southman is fighting for a decision - hopefully he's judged it right and he's actually winning the fight.
Kakos looks to score with a jab to the body but Southman is just out of range.

And that's the end of the fight!
Larry Southman comfortably won the final round on my scorecard.
Well Southman has outworked and out performed his opponent in all aspects of the game today. He was simply too good and the decision should be no more than a formality. Over to the ring announcer for the scorecards.
