PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a light heavyweight MMA rules bout between Jewel Cote (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class) and James Earl (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class). Jewel Cote is staring across the cage at his opponent, tweaking his nipples... Tweaking his own nipples that is.

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the light heavyweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 2 - 0 - 0, fighting out of Montreal, Jewel Cote!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 0 - 2 - 0, fighting out of Montreal, James Earl!
The judges for this bout are Robert Douchet, Elvis Blanc and Ian Loll.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!
A really sloppy takedown attempt there from Cote.
Earl looks really tired already! That doesn't bode well for a good, competitive fight!
Cote blocks a head kick by Earl.

Earl closes the distance, clinches up and gets a nice trip takedown into side control. Very smooth.
You can see the frustration on Cote's face, being in this tough position on the bottom.
Cote throws a couple of strikes from the bottom.
We've had a slow start to the round here - hopefully the action picks up.
Cote wants to control but Earl postures up.
Cote is looking to regain half guard here but Earl keeps moving and retains side control.

That's one minute gone in the round.
Cote sneaks a leg under to get back to half guard.
The fighters are pressed up against the cage, both looking to find a bit of space to work.
Cote makes his way to full guard. A much better position for Cote.
Cote striking off his back but it's not causing Earl any problems.

Earl postures up as if he's going to throw some strikes but drops back for an ankle! Cote is in big trouble! He looks ready to tap! But no, he's escaped and dives on top of Earl, into his guard.

Cote postures up and lands a big shot to Earl's brow.

That's two minutes gone in the round.

Cote is trying to work a guillotine from the top, or something like that? Don't know how he thinks he's going to get a finish from there.

Cote thinks about going for a leg but decides against it, in order to maintain the position.

Cote drops back looking for a leg! Earl is in trouble here! The fighters roll with the hold and Earl manages to kick Cote off! Cote jumps back into Earl's guard.
Cote wants to get up but he can't break Earl's closed guard. He needs to be careful trying to break the legs open, as he's open to submissions here.

That's three minutes gone in the round.

Cote is trying to work a guillotine from the top, or something like that? Don't know how he thinks he's going to get a finish from there.
Cote wants to stand but Earl is controlling his posture from full guard.
Cote working in close now, lands a nice elbow to the side of Earl's head.
Cote is fighting to break Earl's control of his arms but Earl is doing a good job of controlling the position at the moment.

The referee decides to stand the fighters back up.
Horrible takedown attempt by Cote or perhaps it was just good defense by Earl, which made it look bad.
Earl throws a counter combo.

That's four minutes gone in the round.
The crowd are starting to boo a lack of action.

Earl closes the distance and looks for a trip takedown... aaaand he's got it - Earl lands in his opponent's guard.

Cote uses the cage to get back to his feet.
James Earl seems to be the more aggressive standup fighter in this bout.
Cote looks for a takedown but Earl sprawls well.
Earl with the counter takedown but Cote avoids it easily.
That's three failed takedown attempts in the round for Jewel Cote. That's going to take a lot out of him.
Boooooooooooooooooooo!!! God, this has been a terrible round. Come on you two, sort yourselves out!

Earl shoots in for a takedown from distance. He catches Cote napping and manages to drive through into side control!
Cote manages to land a sweep and he's now on top! Lovely Jiu Jitsu!
Earl is not content to let Cote control the position.
Cote is really struggling to control Earl but he's trying to hold on to the position.

Cote seems to be looking for submissions.
We've had a slow start to the round here - hopefully the action picks up.
The two fighters exchange a few words. I couldn't hear what they were saying but maybe it's more fun if you make it up yourself. Cote connects with a nice short shot to Earl's temple.
Cote could do with losing a few pounds - he looks very soft around the mid section, to put it politely.

Cote is looking for a kimura but he's never going to get it from there.
Earl is breathing heavily.

Cote is working for a submission of some sort.

Cote is controlling the pace.

Cote is thinking about going for an arm triangle but he can't free his leg.

The crowd are starting to boo a lack of action.

Cote seems to be working for a kimura but Earl defends the submission attempt.
Cote wants to stand but his hand is trapped. Earl uses the opportunity to regain full guard.
Cote trying to control but Earl is working from the bottom.
Cote looking to sit in guard and control but Earl gets the butterfly guard and sweeps. He's now in the guard on the top.

Cote pulls Earl in close to prevent any damage.

Cote is trying to stand up but he's not managed so far.
Cote doesn't do any damage with a couple of strikes from the bottom.
Cote is striking off his back. Earl thinks nothing of it though and passes easily into half guard.
Earl trying to control the pace.
Cote is staying active underneath Earl, who seems content to just control the action from this position.

There's not a lot going on here and the crowd are letting the fighters know they're not willing to tolerate a lack of action.
Cote trying to control but Earl postures up.

The ref stands the fighters back up due to a lack of activity.

Cote tries to sprawl but Earl drives through with a takedown into half guard.

Cote manages to escape and get back to his feet!

Cote gets in close and instigates a clinch.
The crowd thankful this round is nearly over.
Cote fails to pull guard.

Earl pulls guard effortlessly.
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

Jewel Cote dominated that second round.
The fighters' corners scream their final instructions, as the referee calls time. Here we go, back to the action! The crowd applaud as we get ready to start the final round!


Cote fails miserably with a takedown attempt.
Cote is really dominating this fight. Is there anything that Earl can do to turn this around?
Earl is looking to clinch.
Earl's coach down at Island Impact was telling us pre-fight that they have been working on Earl's balance. Obviously they view that as a key factor in the outcome of this fight.

Cote instigates a clinch.
Cote is trying to break the clinch but Earl is controlling him.
Cote pushes off and fires off an elbow that misses, before clinching up again, against the cage.
Cote is looking to break free of the clinch but Earl has double underhooks.
We've had a slow start to the round here - hopefully the action picks up.

Cote is trying to push Earl away but Earl has him pressed against the cage, so he's going nowhere.
Cote wants to break free but Earl has control.
Earl takes a big intake of breath there - he's definitely tired.

Earl jumps guard and drags Cote to the mat. He's obviously going to be looking for submissions off his back.

Cote controlling from the guard. I say controlling but really, he's stalling.
The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing.

Cote drops back for a leg! It's a sloppy attempt though and Cote jumps back into guard quickly, to retain the dominant position.
Cote connects with a couple of short punches.

Earl has momentary wrist control but Cote slips an elbow through the middle.
Cote is stalling in the full guard.

Neither fighter has done anything of merit for a good minute or two here and the crowd are not happy about it.
Cote throwing strikes from guard but Earl blocks nicely.

Earl is throwing his legs up, looking for submissions. Cote is aware though and is defending well.

The referee has decided to stand the fighters back up, so we'll restart on the feet.

Cote gets the takedown into side control.

Cote thinks about going for a far side armbar but bails out and retains the dominant position instead.

Cote looking for an arm triangle but it's way too loose to do anything.
Earl seems a little lost for a moment, as Cote dominates the positioning.
Jewel Cote overall seems to be getting the better of the ground position in the fight so far.

Cote wants to work for a kimura but he's foiled early by Earl, who protects the arm well.

Neither fighter has done anything of merit for a good minute or two here and the crowd are not happy about it.

Jewel Cote showed his dominance in that final round.
Well I reckon that's a shut out for Cote, winning every round. Will the judges agree? They are the ones who matter, even if they are often depressingly incompetent. Over to the ring announcer for the scorecards.
