PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a lightweight MMA rules bout between Roderick Davis (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class) and David Tanlagu (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class). Tanlagu comes into a darkened arena with his song building. Where The Hood At kicks in, the lights come on and the crowd goes wild! What a showman! Roderick Davis could well score a knockout today. He has the power to get to David Tanlagu's chin.

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the lightweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 2 - 2 - 0, fighting out of The Island, Roderick Davis!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 2 - 29 - 0, fighting out of The Island, David Tanlagu!
The judges for this bout are Michael Johnstone, Sandra Marshall and Daniel Franklin.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!

Tanlagu rushes Davis and presses him up against the cage.
Jeez, both these guys look absolutely knackered already, that's not a good sign!

Tanlagu breaks the clinch and we're back to striking at distance.

Davis shoots in for a takedown and gets it. Let's see what he's got on the mat.
We could do with one of the fighters taking the initiative a bit more on the ground - they're both waiting to capitalize on a mistake.
Davis postures up.
Tanlagu wants to sweep here but Davis controlling him for the moment.
Tanlagu is trying to keep Davis in close.
We've had a slow start to the round here - hopefully the action picks up.
Davis lands a couple of digs.
Davis has to be careful here, sitting in the guard of a superior BJJ player.

Davis gets to his feet and steps away from his opponent.

Davis shoots in but doesn't get the takedown
and Tanlagu counters with a lovely straight right hand!
Davis throws a head kick that connects with a bit of head and a bit of hand.
Davis is looking to clinch but Tanlagu is avoiding it.
Davis stuffs the takedown attempt from Tanlagu. Tanlagu gets slowly back to his feet.

Tanlagu clinches.

Davis jumps guard.
Davis really does look like a pencil wearing a pair of gloves. Let's hope he has a gameplan to suit that ridiculous body shape.
Tanlagu postures up and lands a big shot to Davis's brow.
The fighters are pressed up against the cage, both looking to find a bit of space to work.

That's two minutes gone in the round.
Tanlagu lands a couple of decent looking shots.
Tanlagu trying to control but Davis is working from the bottom.
Davis pulls Tanlagu in close to his closed guard and prevents Tanlagu from doing any damage or advancing position.

Davis has a loose triangle. He'll be looking to tighten that up but Tanlagu can see exactly what he's planning and manages to posture up and free himself.
Tanlagu's corner is telling him to maintain position.

Davis keeping moving, preventing Tanlagu from controlling successfully.
The referee must be thinking about standing these guys back up.
Davis has a closed guard, preventing Tanlagu from standing up.

The referee decides to stand the fighters back up.
Davis misses with a takedown attempt. He shot from a bit too far out.
Tanlagu throws a shot to the body.
Good work by Tanlagu as he checks the leg kick.

That's four minutes gone in the round.
The crowd are showing their displeasure at the lack of action as loud boos ring out around the arena.
Davis has a takedown stuffed.
That's three failed takedown attempts in the round for Roderick Davis. That's going to take a lot out of him.
Davis misses with a jab and misses with a cross straight after too.
Tanlagu changes levels and scores with a jab to the body.
Tanlagu shoots in looking for a double leg takedown. Davis defends it nicely.
Boooooooooooooooooooo!!! God, this has been a terrible round. Come on you two, sort yourselves out!
Davis throws a right hand that Tanlagu ducks under and follows up with a left that Tanlagu also avoids with ease.
Davis takes a thudding leg kick, right into the meat of the thigh.
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

A close round but David Tanlagu will probably get the nod.
That's the end of the interval. I'm sure that seemed a lot quicker than a minute for our two fighters! Back to the action.


Davis throws a head kick that misses and slips in the process. He scrambles back to his feet and the fighters circle.
Davis shoots in with a takedown attempt and he has Tanlagu pinned against the cage. Tanlagu gets the underhooks and manages to circle away.
The fighters are starting to get sweaty, which will make takedowns a bit more tricky.
Tanlagu changes levels and looks for a double leg takedown. Davis tries to avoid it but Tanlagu manages to keep hold of a leg and drag Davis to the ground. Davis escapes though and pops straight back up to his feet.
Davis tries to score a power double leg takedown but Tanlagu sees that one coming and sprawls well. That will dishearten Davis somewhat.
Tanlagu steps in looking to clinch after the strikes miss from Davis.
We've had a slow start to the round here - hopefully the action picks up.

Davis tries to keep at a distance but Tanlagu has taken the fight into the clinch.
Both fighters are absolutely exhausted here.

Tanlagu breaks from the clinch.
Tanlagu circles away from the clinch attempt
and Tanlagu counters with a lovely straight right hand!
Davis fails with the takedown
enabling Tanlagu to counter with a crisp jab.
That's three failed takedown attempts in the round for Roderick Davis. That's going to take a lot out of him.
Tanlagu feints and then cracks Davis's leading leg with a nice low kick. He's obviously looking to slow Davis down.
Davis throws a left and a right that both miss

and Tanlagu counters by moving into the clinch.

Tanlagu is trying to work for a single leg takedown but Davis pulls him back up using the underhooks.

Davis escapes the clinch and we're back to striking.
Tanlagu shoots in but no luck this time.
Davis shoots in for a double leg but Tanlagu sprawls well. That's going to sap some energy.
Tanlagu fakes high and shoots in for a takedown but Davis avoids it really well and circles away.
Tanlagu rushes forward with a series of wild hooks but Davis moves out of range and avoids them all easily.
Davis tries to counter with a takedown but Tanlagu is quick to defend against it.

Davis moves into the clinch.
Tanlagu gets underhooks to prevent Davis's takedown attempt.

That's three minutes gone in the round.
Tanlagu wants to get back to striking at distance but Davis won't allow it.
Tanlagu is trying to work out of this bad position, with his back against the cage.

Davis breaks from the clinch.
Tanlagu shoots in but no luck this time.
Tanlagu misses with a few strikes there.
Davis swings away but doesn't land with a series of punches.
Davis comes forward and lands a shot to the body, then darts back out of range.
Davis closes the distance and clinches up with Tanlagu, looking for a takedown. Davis pushes Tanlagu against the cage but Tanlagu circles to the side and manages to break the clinch.
Danga de danga de dang - Tanlagu scores with a four punch combination!
Davis takes a jab on the nose. He smiles like he loves it and keeps coming.
Tanlagu lands a right hook to the body.

That's four minutes gone in the round.
Davis throws a lazy head kick
and Tanlagu counters with a nice jab to the body that keeps Davis thinking.
Roderick Davis is looking to throw some combinations by the looks of things.
Davis has his takedown stuffed
and Tanlagu counters with a series of strikes. Davis will be more careful next time no doubt.
The crowd are loving this. Great action here.

Davis shoots in and gets a takedown into Tanlagu's guard.

Tanlagu has an omoplata and is looking to use it perhaps as a submission or perhaps to transition. Davis is in a bit of discomfort here, but he's managed to free himself and has dived into side control! That didn't work out too well for Tanlagu.

Davis lands a few punches from side control.
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

David Tanlagu showed his class in that round. I'd imagine he'll take it on all the scorecards.
The corners get their ten second warning. Both fighters stand from their stools and stare eachother down, ready to get back to the action. This is the final round!



Davis looking to score a takedown here. Tanlagu is defending well but Davis drives through and ends up in Tanlagu's guard.

Davis stands and steps away. Tanlagu gets to his feet too and we're back to the striking game.

Davis shoots in for a takedown and gets it. Let's see what he's got on the mat.
Roderick Davis overall seems to be getting the better of the ground position in the fight so far.
Tanlagu throwing strikes off his back to little effect.

Tanlagu looking for submissions from the bottom here. Moving his hips around, possibly looking for an armbar.

Tanlagu has a closed guard, preventing anything of note from happening. Perhaps he's looking to stall.
Tanlagu wants to get back to his feet but Davis is in a dominant position and won't allow it.
Tanlagu is using up a lot of energy trying to get back to his feet. Perhaps he should improve his position first.

Davis thinks about going for a leg but decides against it, in order to maintain the position.
Davis controlling from the guard. I say controlling but really, he's stalling.

A few boos can be heard. I'm sure they will multiply if the fighters don't pick up the pace.
Tanlagu throwing some rather feeble looking strikes off his back.

The referee decides to stand the fighters back up.

Davis shoots in for a takedown from distance. He catches Tanlagu napping and manages to drive through into side control!
Tanlagu takes a big shot right to the temple there but he's taken it well.

That's three minutes gone in the round.
You can see the frustration on Tanlagu's face as Davis controls the position.
We've been hearing that Davis has been drilling a lot of ground and pound in training, so let's see if he get the finish.

Davis looking for an arm triangle but it's way too loose to do anything.
Davis prevents Tanlagu from escaping the position.
Davis connects with a decent looking elbow from side control that caused Tanlagu some visible discomfort.
Tanlagu can't do much from the bottom here.
Tanlagu is looking for a sweep.
Davis wants to control but Tanlagu is keeping him busy.
David Tanlagu is fighting for a decision - hopefully he's judged it right and he's actually winning the fight.

The crowd are hurling abuse towards the fighters... You can hardly blame them though because there isn't a lot going on in the fight.
Davis working away.
Davis is looking to take a break and control but Tanlagu is keeping him honest, looking to work from the bottom.

Davis has had enough of the ground for now and decides to stand.
Boooooooooooooooooooo!!! God, this has been a terrible round. Come on you two, sort yourselves out!
Tanlagu lands a jab to Davis's midsection.

And that's the end of the fight!
Roderick Davis showed his dominance in that final round.
I think Tanlagu has won this one but let's see whether the judges agree with me. Over to the ring announcer for the scorecards.

A very excited looking David Tanlagu rambled incoherently for about 5 minutes post fight about how awesome he is. It was kinda funny for a while but then everyone got annoyed.
