PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a super heavyweight MMA rules bout between Jeffery Abbott (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class) and John Locke (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class). We have two fighters making their debuts here, so let's see who comes out of this one with their first professional victory.

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the super heavyweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 0 - 0 - 0, fighting out of Las Vegas, Jeffery Abbott!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 0 - 0 - 0, fighting out of Las Vegas, John Locke!
The judges for this bout are Alan Glass, Frank Dennis and Cecil Peabody.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!
Abbott defending well as Locke loads up on a big left hand.
Abbott misses with a half-hearted attempt at a head kick.
Locke throws a jab when Abbott was well out of range.
Abbott was looking to counter that last move with a shot to the body but he didn't commit.

Abbott moves into range and clinches up with Locke.
Locke tries for a takedown but Abbott manages to get underhooks.

Abbott breaks the clinch and we're back to striking at distance.
Locke looks for a takedown but Abbott sprawls well.
We've had a slow start to the round here - hopefully the action picks up.

Abbott gets a clinch.

Abbott stops a takedown attempt from Locke.
Jeffery Abbott has stuffed three takedown attempts in the round now. That's going to take a lot out of John Locke.

Locke has a body lock and is looking for a takedown. Abbott is bouncing around trying to prevent the takedown and somehow he has indeed managed to stay on his feet.

Abbott drags the fight down to the ground.

Locke won't allow Abbott to get back to his feet.
The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing.

Locke postures up as if he's going to throw some strikes but drops back for an ankle! Abbott is in big trouble! He looks ready to tap! But no, he's escaped and dives on top of Locke, into his guard.

Locke wants to get back to his feet but he's too absorbed in his own little project and Abbott manages to pass to side control.

The fighters are battling for position here. Locke manages to regain full guard. Nice work.
Locke is looking to get back to his feet but can't, whilst Abbott is controlling him.

Abbott has to be careful here, sitting in the guard of a superior BJJ player.

Abbott makes a bit of distance and scores with some ground and pound, still in guard.
Locke trying to control the position.
Abbott loading up with the ground and pound but he's missing more than he's landing in this flurry.
Locke is trying to keep Abbott in close.

Locke had isolated an arm as going for a kimura. Abbott defends it easily.

Abbott wants to control from the top but Locke keeps moving.
Abbott postures up and scores with a shot to the body and a follow up elbow to the head.
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

The corners get their ten second warning. Both fighters stand from their stools and stare eachother down, ready to get back to the action.


Locke fails to land with the punch combination there - jab, cross, hook, miss, miss, miss.
Locke goes for a double leg but Abbott avoids the attempt and the two fighters end up clinched against the cage as Abbott continues to drive forward.

Abbott gets in close and instigates a clinch.
Abbott could do with losing a few pounds - he looks very soft around the mid section, to put it politely.
Locke is working for a takedown up against the cage. He can't get it on this occasion though.

Abbott's corner calls for him to break the clinch, which he does.
Abbott pulls out of a head kick attempt.
Locke fails with a rather predictable takedown attempt.
Abbott lifts his leg as if looking to counter with a high kick.

Well, he's not going to score with shots like that. A lazy body kick attempt from Abbott.
Locke shoots for a takedown but Abbott saw that one coming a mile off and avoided it easily.

Locke is looking for a kimura. He might have it! No, Abbott has escaped the position, nice work there.

Abbott is looking for a sweep.

Locke is trying to get an arm triangle but Abbott is defending well.

Locke swings around for an armbar but Abbott sees it coming a mile off and turns beautifully into Locke's guard.
Abbott is stalling in the full guard.
Locke is working from a closed guard but he's struggling to control his opponent.

Locke looking to hit a scissor sweep but Abbott is one step ahead there.

Locke wants a takedown but no success here.
Abbott's corner are urging him to control the action in the clinch for a moment, rather than mount any serious offense. I'm sure the crowd appreciate those instructions... not.

and Locke counters with a shoot takedown into half guard.
The fighters are pressed up against the cage, both looking to find a bit of space to work.

Locke looking for a kimura but he'll have to free his other leg if he wants to finish that. Perhaps he's just using it as a distraction technique.
Locke takes a big intake of breath there - he's definitely tired.

Locke seems to be working for a kimura but Abbott defends the submission attempt.

Locke is looking for a kimura but Abbott is holding onto that half guard position, so it's hard for Locke to get the leverage.

Abbott seems keen to control rather than go for a submission, at least for now.

Locke drops back, looking for a kneebar! Abbott looks panicked! The fighters roll across the mat, one looking to finish, one looking to escape. Abbott looks to have wriggled free... Yes, he's got his leg free and he's dived into side control! Good work there from Abbott!

Locke is looking to slip a leg under and get half guard but Abbott is one step ahead and moves to full mount!

Abbott postures up and cracks his opponent a couple of times before moving back into close ground control. Locke looks a forlorn figure.

Abbott is thinking about an arm triangle here, looking to tighten it up before moving to side control. Locke can see it coming though and defends well with a couple of strikes to the head and some good arm positioning.
Abbott avoids the attempt from Locke to control.
Abbott lands with some strikes.
Locke slips a leg in and gets back to half guard.
Locke wants to get back to his feet.
Abbott uses his free foot to push down on Locke's thigh. Eventually he works his other foot free and he's advanced to mount - this is trouble for Locke.

Abbott goes for an armbar but Locke turns quickly into his guard - lovely anticipation from Locke.
Locke passes Abbott's right leg, so he's now in half guard.

Locke is trying a forearm choke… I don't think that's going to do much at this level of the game.

Locke is looking for a kimura but he's never going to get it from there.
John Locke has stepped it up - he knows he needs a finish here!
Jeffery Abbott is fighting for a decision here - he's started to take the cautious approach.
The crowd thankful this round is nearly over.

Locke is working for a submission of some sort.

That was a close round. You could make an argument for either fighter but I would give it to Jeffery Abbott.
Well Abbott has outscored his opponent in every aspect of the fight today. Only a scarily incompetent judge or two will keep him from a well deserved win... Over to the ring announcer for the scorecards.
