PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a heavyweight MMA rules bout between Leonardo Clay (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class) and Cory Todd (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class). Cory Todd will no doubt be trying to keep this one on the feet, where he has a distinct advantage.

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the heavyweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 0 - 3 - 0, fighting out of Hilo, Leonardo Clay!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 0 - 2 - 0, fighting out of Hilo, Cory Todd!
The judges for this bout are Roger Salmon, Chris Saunders and Colin Fray.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!
Todd fails with a takedown attempt from distance.
Cory Todd seems to be the more aggressive standup fighter in this bout.

Clay throws a loose over hand right and dives in with a double leg takedown. Todd tries to sprawl but it's too late and the fighters hit the mat. Clay is in Todd's guard.

Clay stands up and waves to Todd to follow him.
Nice sprawl there from Clay as Todd shoots in.
Clay is looking for a counter combo.
Todd looks winded!
Todd throws a hard body shot but it just misses.
Clay shoots in for a takedown. "I don't think so" says Todd as he avoids it easily.

Clay has closed the distance and engaged Todd in a clinch.
We've had a slow start to the round here - hopefully the action picks up.

Clay breaks the clinch and we're back to striking at distance.
Todd fails with a takedown attempt.
Clay wants to take advantage of his opponent's missed offense by moving into the clinch.
Leonardo Clay has stuffed three takedown attempts in the round now. That's going to take a lot out of Cory Todd.

Todd looks for a takedown here. Will he get it? Clay is fending him off so far but Todd persists. Nope, Clay circles away and we're back to standing.

Clay darts in and lands a nice takedown into half guard.
Todd is trying to get back to full guard.

Clay is thinking about going for an arm triangle but he can't free his leg.
Clay will need to keep those long limbs tucked in whilst he's on the ground, to prevent any submissions.

Clay is trying for a guillotine from the top but the pressure isn't in the right place so Todd is just riding it out for now. Clay eventually gives up the hold.
Todd has no desire to be mounted, so is trying to control. Clay is working away from the top position though.

Clay not landing any meaningful shots this time.
The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing.

Clay is trying a forearm choke… I don't think that's going to do much at this level of the game.
Todd wants to control but Clay is keeping busy and won't allow it.

Todd misses with a takedown attempt

and Clay counters by moving into the clinch. Good anticipation by Clay.

Clay escapes the clinch and we're back to striking.

Clay shoots in looking for a single leg takedown. Todd is trying to defend but Clay finishes it well and ends up in half guard. Let's see if he can advance position further.
Well, if Clay is going to just lie there, perhaps we should talk about what we're having for dinner tonight… I'm having a ham and pineapple pizza… Yum. Can't wait.
Todd is looking to regain full guard. Not this time though.

Todd has hold of Clay's hands but Clay slips his arm to the side and lands an elbow.

Todd takes a couple of big shots there - the referee warns him that he has to defend himself better.

and Clay counters with a three punch combination, finished off with a leg kick. Nice work.
Todd misses with a takedown attempt. He shot from a bit too far out.
Clay is really dominating this fight. Is there anything that Todd can do to turn this around?

Clay shoots in and scores a nice double leg takedown into half guard.
Todd is looking to get back to is feet but Clay passes into side control.

Clay decides to take the fight back to the feet.
Clay fails with a rather predictable takedown attempt.
Clay shoots in looking for a takedown. Todd tries to sprawl out of it but Clay keeps driving through. The fighters are pinned against the cage. Todd manages to get underhooks and after a bit of a struggle, circles away and we're back to standing.

Clay gets the takedown into side control.

Clay working hard here to secure a kimura but he's not really in the right position for it.
The fighters are starting to perspire pretty heavily.
Todd is trying to control Clay's posture but Clay avoids it.

Todd tries to work a leg under to get back to half guard but Clay wriggles his own leg back out and remains in side control.

Clay stands up and beckons Todd to his feet.
Clay has a takedown stuffed.
Clay shoots in for a takedown. "Ole!" shouts Todd as he jumps to the side.
Todd tries a counter takedown but it's more of a dummy move, and he uses it to push himself away.

A lull in the action here being met with boos from the crowd.
Todd keeps the fight standing with a nice sprawl.
Todd wants to counter the offense by Clay and move into the clinch position.
We've been informed that Todd has been working hard on his conditioning in the buildup to the fight.
Todd leaves Clay with his face pressed against the mat as he sprawls beautifully, defending against a solid takedown attempt.
Clay shoots in for a double leg but Todd sprawls well. That's going to sap some energy.
Todd fails miserably with a takedown attempt.
Clay changes levels looking for a counter takedown but doesn't commit.
The crowd thankful this round is nearly over.

Clay closes the distance and gets a trip takedown into side control. Todd quickly recovers to half guard.
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

That's time! Clay's corner gives him a slap on the ass as he gets ready to fight. And we move into the final round!



Clay has taken the fight to the clinch.

Clay decides to pull guard.
Todd working in close now, lands a nice elbow to the side of Clay's head.

Todd got a little sloppy there for a moment and Clay has worked his way into a loose triangle - can he finish it?! No, Todd has managed to get both his arms back between Clay's legs - danger averted.
Todd wants to stand but Clay has a closed guard, so he can't escape.
Clay lands a beautiful sweep and he's now moved into his opponent's guard.


Clay stands and steps away. Todd gets to his feet too and we're back to the striking game.

Todd tries to shoot in for a takedown. He's got hold of a leg but Clay swivels and escapes.
Todd takes a big intake of breath there - he's definitely tired.

Clay fails miserably with a takedown attempt.

and Clay counters by moving into the clinch. Good anticipation by Clay.
Todd drops down looking for an ankle pick but Clay pulls his leg out and moves away.

Clay tries to drive through with a takedown attempt but Todd defends well and Clay ends up having to push Todd into the cage where they will battle it out in the clinch.

The fighters are pressed up against the cage, both looking to find a bit of space to work.
Clay is keeping good posture, landing some ground and pound.

There's not a lot going on here and the crowd are letting the fighters know they're not willing to tolerate a lack of action.

Clay stands, ready to strike. The ref makes him back up and allows Todd to get to his feet.

Clay dives in and scores a takedown into Todd's guard.
Clay has to be careful here, sitting in the guard of a superior BJJ player.
Boooooooooooooooooooo!!! God, this has been a terrible round. Come on you two, sort yourselves out!
Clay postures up and lands a big shot to Todd's brow.
Cory Todd has stepped it up - he knows he needs a finish here!
Leonardo Clay is fighting for a decision here - he's started to take the cautious approach.

Clay gets to his feet and steps away from his opponent.

And that's the end of the fight!

Well I reckon that's a shut out for Clay, winning every round. Will the judges agree? They are the ones who matter, even if they are often depressingly incompetent. Over to the ring announcer for the scorecards.
