PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a welterweight MMA rules bout between Benjamin Hess (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class) and Tony Mencarini (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class). Tony Mencarini will no doubt be trying to keep this one on the feet, where he has a distinct advantage.

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the welterweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 0 - 2 - 0, fighting out of New York, Benjamin Hess!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 0 - 0 - 0, fighting out of New York, Tony Mencarini!
The judges for this bout are Chad Campbell, Reed Andrews and John Kavanagh.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!

Hess closes the distance and clinches.

Mencarini breaks the clinch and we're back to striking at distance.
Hess with poor footwork there. He got himself in a bit of a tangle, enabling Mencarini to score with a decent uppercut.

Mencarini pushes Hess up against the cage in a clinch.
Hess displaying some good clinch control by pressing Mencarini up against the cage.

Mencarini gets a nice trip takedown into half guard.
Mencarini sitting in half guard, looking to land shots. Hess defending well though.
Mencarini tries to stand but his hand is stuck under Hess.
Mencarini prevents Hess from improving his position.

Hess is trying to maintain the position but Mencarini is very close to passing his half guard.
Hess is looking for a sweep. Mencarini is wise to his cunning plan and keeps the top position.

Hess looking to work for a kimura from the bottom.
Mencarini wants to stand up but Hess has a hold of him and won't allow it.
Mencarini throwing shots but they're hitting the canvas more than the man.
Mencarini wants to take a breather but Hess is having none of it.
Hess is looking for a sweep. Mencarini is wise to his cunning plan and keeps the top position.
Mencarini wants to lay and pray for a moment but Hess keeps working.
Hess is pressing down on Mencarini's left leg trying to get back to full guard. He's managed it.

The crowd are starting to boo a lack of action.
Hess keeping moving, preventing Mencarini from controlling successfully.
Mencarini controlling from the guard. I say controlling but really, he's stalling.
Hess controls Mencarini momentarily but Mencarini frees himself.
Mencarini must be cautious of submissions here, given that his opponent has the superior Jiu Jitsu.
Hess is avoiding any damage by keeping wrist control.

The referee has motioned to the fighters to stand back up. He just wasn't happy with the level of activity.

Mencarini closes the distance and clinches.

Mencarini pushes off and circles away, back to the middle of the mat.

Mencarini has taken the fight to the clinch.
Mencarini is trying to push Hess away but Hess has him pressed against the cage, so he's going nowhere.
Mencarini can't break the clinch.
Mencarini throws a punch but it's blocked by Hess.

Mencarini jumps guard and drags Hess to the mat. He's obviously going to be looking for submissions off his back.
Mencarini is working the butterfly guard. He manages to land a nice scissor sweep and is now in half guard on the top. Nice move.


Mencarini is sneakily working for an arm triangle but Hess sees it coming and defends easily.
Mencarini not throwing his punches with enough precision this time.
The fighters are starting to get a bit slippery now, which will make submissions a bit more difficult.

Hess makes his way to full guard. A much better position for Hess.
Mencarini is looking to work some ground and pound but Hess has wrist control.
Hess is pulling down on Mencarini's head to control his posture.
Hess has controlled the position for a good 20 seconds, which will no doubt be starting to frustrate his opponent.
A big thud reverberates around the arena there as Mencarini accidentally thumps the mat. Hopefully he's not broken his hand.
Mencarini would like to get this fight back to the feet but can't get free from the closed guard.
Hess is working the butterfly guard. He manages to land a nice scissor sweep and is now in half guard on the top. Nice move.


Mencarini pushes Hess off and gets back to his feet.
This is a great period of action - very entertaining stuff!
The crowd thankful this round is nearly over.
Hess throws a head kick that misses.
It seemed like Mencarini was going to counter with the hook but didn't fully commit to it.
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

Mencarini swings and misses with a hook to the body.

Mencarini throws the overhand right but ducks down into a quick takedown attempt. Hess was covering up waiting for the punch and Mencarini finishes the takedown easily into guard.

Hess has control of Mencarini's left arm, preventing Mencarini from doing any damage.
Hess looking to sweep using the butterfly guard but Mencarini puts pay to that idea as he passes nicely into half guard.
We've had a slow start to the round here - hopefully the action picks up.
Mencarini wants to stand but Hess has hold of a leg and an arm, so he's trapped for now.

Mencarini is looking for an arm triangle, whilst trying to pass to side control. Hess doesn't seem that keen to cooperate though. No luck this time Mencarini.

Mencarini thumps the canvas. Not on purpose obviously - he just missed Hess's head.
Tony Mencarini has got the better of the ground game so far.
Hess gets back to full guard.
Hess has Mencarini pulled in close to control his posture.
Mencarini trying to control but Hess is working from the bottom.
Hess really is a fat lump.

The crowd are hurling abuse towards the fighters... You can hardly blame them though because there isn't a lot going on in the fight.
Mencarini stands up over Hess, holding his feet. He dives back in and lands a decent shot to the head.
Hess is working from a closed guard but he's struggling to control his opponent.
Mencarini throws an elbow that misses. Hess uses the momentum to reverse the position. He's now in Mencarini's guard. Nice move by Hess!

Mencarini has been the more effective fighter overall so far.

Mencarini tries to land a sweep but no joy.
Mencarini wants to stand but Hess is controlling the position.
Hess lands a couple of elbows.
Hess connects with a couple of short punches.

Mencarini looking for submissions from the bottom but instead Hess passes into side control.
Mencarini is looking to regain half guard here but Hess keeps moving and retains side control.

That's four minutes gone in the round.
Neither fighter has done anything of merit for a good minute or two here and the crowd are not happy about it.
Mencarini is not in a great position here, taking some shots.
The fighters are pressed up against the cage, both looking to find a bit of space to work.
Hess is moving around in side control but his primary objective seems to be to maintain the position.
Hess grinds an elbow into Mencarini's temple.
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

A close second round but Tony Mencarini will probably get the nod - 10:9.
That's time! Hess's corner gives him a slap on the ass as he gets ready to fight. Ladies and gentlemen, this is the final round!


Hess misses with a kick to the body.
Mencarini unleashes a big counter combination but Hess bobs and weaves and avoids any damage.
Horrible takedown attempt by Hess or perhaps it was just good defense by Mencarini, which made it look bad.
Hess takes one to the side of the head.
A combination from Hess does no damage.
A little jabbing left from Mencarini on the counter but it doesn't find it's target.

Hess gets tackled into the cage by Mencarini. Mencarini maintains the clinch.
Mencarini has had enough of the clinch but Hess keeps him there for the moment.

Mencarini pulls guard successfully.
We've had a slow start to the round here - hopefully the action picks up.
Hess content to stall in guard here.

Mencarini is wriggling around but Hess manages to pass to half guard.
Mencarini on the receiving end of some nice ground and pound.
Hess is just sitting in half guard, waiting for something to happen.
Mencarini is looking to get back to full guard here but Hess has managed to pass to side control instead.

Well. There's a bit of a lull in the action here and the crowd are starting to get restless.
Mencarini throws a couple of punches but he's in a bad position and they don't land.
Mencarini takes a couple of big shots there - the referee warns him that he has to defend himself better.
Hess cracks Mencarini with a big right hand but Mencarini just smiles back at him and invites him to have another go.
Mencarini takes a big shot right to the temple there but he's taken it well.
Mencarini is working hard to escape and get back to his feet. After a battle for position, Hess asserts his dominance and retains side control.
Mencarini tries to get back to half guard but can't.

Hess working the head with strikes.
Hess working away diligently from side control. Landing strikes effectively there - that will score him some points on the judges scorecards.
Mencarini is looking to get back to his feet here but Hess is keeping cool and he's managed to take Mencarini's back.
Hess lands a shot to the head.

That's four minutes gone in the round.
Mencarini is defending well here and trying to improve his position.
The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing.
Mencarini is persisting with the attempt to improve his position.
Hess has his opponent trapped and is landing shots. Not a good position for Mencarini.
Mencarini trying to get back to his feet but Hess is in full control for now.
Mencarini is very frustrated here, being controlled quite effectively by Hess.
Boooooooooooooooooooo!!! God, this has been a terrible round. Come on you two, sort yourselves out!
Hess is punishing Mencarini with strikes - can he finish him?!

And that's the end of the fight!
Benjamin Hess showed his dominance in that final round.
I think Mencarini has won this one but let's see whether the judges agree with me. Over to the ring announcer for the scorecards.
