These two fighters really are very evenly matched on the feet - it will be fascinating to see who can assert themselves in that aspect of the fight.

And introducing the challenger to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.

The judges for this bout are John Roberts, Bruno Lombardi and Jorge Garcia.
The bell rings for round one and we are underway!
Garbrandt has closed the distance and engaged Carruthers Jr in a clinch.
Carruthers Jr wants to break free but Garbrandt has control.
Carruthers Jr is trying to push Garbrandt away but Garbrandt has him pressed against the cage, so he's going nowhere.
Garbrandt presses Carruthers Jr against the cage and delivers a mid-strength body shot.
Carruthers Jr looks winded!

An uppercut to the body lands inside from Garbrandt.
Garbrandt lands a body punch in the clinch.
Garbrandt works on Carruthers Jr's body with a couple of short punches.
Garbrandt scores with a shoulder strike.
Carruthers Jr's head jolts backwards as he takes an uppercut right on the button!
Garbrandt makes some space for himself and lands an uppercut.
Garbrandt throws a knee to the head but misses.
Garbrandt pushes Carruthers Jr back against the cage and lands a hook to the side of the head.

This is a great period of action - very entertaining stuff!
Garbrandt lands a shot to the body.
Carruthers Jr blocks the elbow strike.
Garbrandt pushes off an throws an elbow but Carruthers Jr leans to the side and avoids it. We're back to clinching against the cage.
Garbrandt lands on the inside with an uppercut.
Garbrandt drops Carruthers Jr onto one knee with a big uppercut from the clinch! Carruthers Jr is propped up by the cage and works his way back to his feet!
Carruthers Jr is rocked!
Carruthers Jr is pressed against the cage. Garbrandt pushes back and unleashes a big elbow that really hurts Carruthers Jr! Two more big strikes from Garbrandt and Carruthers Jr crumples to the mat and taps out furiously due to the strikes!
Ladies and gentlemen, after 1:08 of round 1, we have a winner by way of Submission (Strikes). Cody Garbrandt!
Cody Garbrandt is the new middleweight champion!
An out of breath Cody Garbrandt thanked his loyal fans in his post fight interview, giving them credit for his success over the course of his career.
