PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a heavyweight MMA rules bout between Joesph Walls (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class) and Robbie Lawson (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class). Robbie Lawson told me before the fight that he's been watching a lot of DVDs so let's see if that helps him in this one! I can't wait to find out!

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the heavyweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 2 - 0 - 0, fighting out of Tokyo, Joesph Walls!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 0 - 0 - 0, fighting out of Tokyo, Robbie Lawson !
The judges for this bout are Shigeki Sano, Sosuke Kotani and Ren Mimura.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!

Lawson closes the distance and after a bit of a stuggle, scores a takedown into Walls's guard.
Lawson content to strike from guard, landing some decent shots.
The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing.

Walls has an active guard here but Lawson has managed to pass into half guard.
Lawson is trying to control the action in half guard but Walls is working away on the bottom, looking perhaps to get back to full guard.
Walls moves his hips nicely and gets into full guard.
Walls will need to keep those long limbs tucked in whilst he's on the ground, to prevent any submissions.

Walls wriggles free and stands up.

Walls dives in and scores a takedown into Lawson 's guard.
We've seen a great period of action over the last minute or so - credit to both fighters for going all out!
Walls not doing a lot at the moment. He'll have to show some more aggression or the fight will get stood up.
Lawson is trying to control the position but Walls postures up.

Walls gets to his feet. Lawson looking to butt scoot but the ref puts an end to that. On your feet son!
Lawson tries for a takedown but Walls sees it coming a mile off and avoids it easily.
Walls dives in and grabs Lawson 's left leg, looking for a takedown. Lawson pushes down on Walls's head and hops out.
Walls shoots in for a takedown. He's persisting with it as Lawson sprawls well. Lawson wins this battle and keeps the fight standing. Walls gets slowly back to his feet.
Lawson throws a head kick that misses and slips in the process. He scrambles back to his feet and the fighters circle.

Walls gets caught flat footed, as Lawson shoots in with a quick takedown into guard.
Walls is looking to stand back up... there's a bit of a scramble and Lawson dives into side control.
Lawson sitting in side control, looking to soften his opponent up with elbows and hammerfists but Walls is avoiding damage well and looking to escape the position.

Walls pushes Lawson away and creates a bit of space to escape. He's almost out here... but no, Lawson gets a good hold of his legs and remains firmly in side control.
Walls is looking for a sweep.
Lawson tries to advance to mount but can't.
A lull in the action here as Lawson stalls from top position.

Lawson is trying to land an Americana. He has the arm isolated but Walls is keeping cool and he's avoided the danger for now.

Lawson wants to lay and pray for a moment but Walls keeps working.
Lawson is in a good position here but he's just trying to control... And he's not even managing to do that successfully.
Walls manages to get back to half guard.
The fighters are pressed up against the cage, both looking to find a bit of space to work.
Walls is staying active underneath Lawson , who seems content to just control the action from this position.

The crowd are getting on the fighters' backs, as the pace has dropped off in the last minute or so.
Lawson prevents Walls from improving his position.
The referee must be thinking about standing these guys back up.
Lawson is looking to take a break and control but Walls is keeping him honest, looking to work from the bottom.

The referee has stepped in and called for a break in the action. We'll restart on the feet.

Walls ties up his opponent against the cage and manages to drag the fight down to the ground. Walls no doubt will be looking to work submissions from his guard.

Walls is looking for a triangle here but Lawson uses the submission attempt to pass into side control.
We've had a slow start to the round here - hopefully the action picks up.
Lawson creates some space and throws a big elbow, but Walls sees it coming and moves his head just enough to avoid the strike.

and Walls counters with a left and a right that stings Lawson .

Lawson stuffs the takedown.
Both fighters are absolutely exhausted here.

Lawson darts in and clinches Walls up against the cage.
Lawson wants a takedown.

Lawson is working on a single leg takedown against the cage. Walls can't fight it off and eventually Lawson manages to take the fight to the floor. Walls looks annoyed but at least he's managed to land in guard.
This has been an exciting period of action!

Walls is looking for a guillotine. You can't force these things though and Lawson defends well.

Well. There's a bit of a lull in the action here and the crowd are starting to get restless.
Lawson postures up and lands a big shot to Walls's brow.
The crowd thankful this round is nearly over.

And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

That was a close second round but I would say that Joesph Walls will probably get the nod.
The fighters get back to their feet, the hooter sounds and we're back to the action! This is the final round!

Walls stands up from Lawson 's guard - Walls perhaps looking for a knockout.
Lawson fails with a takedown attempt.
Walls shoots in for a takedown - he's clinched up with Lawson but Lawson pushes him off and we're back to square one.
And Lawson tries to counter it with a takedown but Walls pushes his down on his head and steps out.

Lawson cracks a nice hook into Walls's ribs.

Lawson clinches up with Walls and pushes him back against the cage.
Walls has Lawson pressed up against the cage and is working for takedown. Lawson manages to improve position though and keeps the fight standing.
That's three failed takedown attempts in the round for Joesph Walls. That's going to take a lot out of him.
Both fighters are breathing heavily.

Lawson might have to switch it up a bit here because his efforts to control Walls haven't been going to plan, at least at the current moment in time.

Kneeeeees! The crowd are calling for knees to the body. Lawson obliges.

Lawson pushes off and circles away, back to the middle of the mat.
Walls throws a head kick but Lawson moves out of range.
Lawson lands with a thumping leg kick.
Joesph Walls is looking to throw some combinations by the looks of things.

The fight moves into the clinch position.
Walls prevents the takedown attempt.

Lawson gets control of Walls's arms and successfully pulls guard. Lawson will no doubt be looking for submissions off his back.

Lawson is throwing his legs up, looking for submissions. Walls is aware though and is defending well.

Walls stands up and waves to Lawson to follow him.
Lawson slaps away a takedown attempt from Walls, before circling back to the center of the mat.

Horrible takedown attempt by Lawson or perhaps it was just good defense by Walls, which made it look bad.

Lawson moves into the clinch.
Lawson goes for a takedown attempt but Walls pushes him away and we're back to fighting at a distance.

Lawson has taken the fight to the clinch.
The crowd thankful this round is nearly over.
Lawson tried to land a shot to the body but connects with Walls's elbow.

And that's the end of the fight!
Robbie Lawson comfortably won the final round on my scorecard.
Well Lawson has outworked and out performed his opponent in all aspects of the game today. He was simply too good and the decision should be no more than a formality. Over to the ring announcer for the scorecards.
