PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a welterweight MMA rules bout between King Mejia (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class) and Shay Brown (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class). Rumors backstage are that the fighters have been paid to keep it standing but we know that would never happen in MMA!

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the welterweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 3 - 6 - 0, fighting out of London, King Mejia!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 1 - 0 - 0, fighting out of London, Shay Brown!
The judges for this bout are Steven Brown, James Atkins and Colin Fotheringham.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!

Brown rushes Mejia and pushes him back against the cage in a clinch.
Mejia working aggressively here.
Brown tried to land a shot to the body but connects with Mejia's elbow.

Mejia turns his hips and lands a very nice judo throw into side control!
Brown tries to improve position but can't.
Brown is letting Mejia control him for a moment.
Mejia has controlled the position for a good 20 seconds, which will no doubt be starting to frustrate his opponent.
Brown is working hard to escape and get back to his feet. After a battle for position, Mejia asserts his dominance and retains side control.
We've had a slow start to the round here - hopefully the action picks up.

That's one minute gone in the round.
Brown is trying to control Mejia's posture but Mejia avoids it.
Brown tries to get back to half guard but can't.
Mejia tries to cartwheel into mount but he doesn't manage it.

Mejia stands up and we're back to a striking position.
Brown pulls out of a head kick attempt.

Brown clinches.
Mejia managing to block the knees to the body from Brown.

That's two minutes gone in the round.
Brown lands with a short punch from the clinch.
Mejia blocks an uppercut.
Brown digs a right hand into Mejia's ribs. Those have got to be taking their toll on Mejia's gas tank.
Brown is looking to control Mejia's arms but Mejia gets an underhook and turns him. Now Brown has his back to the cage.
Mejia blocks a body shot from Brown.
An uppercut on the inside fails to land for Brown.

Mejia jumps guard.
Brown stopping the sweep attempt from Mejia.
A real slowdown in the pace of the fight for a moment, as Mejia holds on and takes a little breather.
Brown has decided he wants to stand but the closed guard of Mejia is proving hard to escape from.

Brown decides to stand up and beckons his opponent to follow.

That's three minutes gone in the round.
Brown throws a combination but it was largely blocked by Mejia.

Brown clinches up against the cage.
Brown putting his Muay Thai to good use. He has Mejia in a tight clinch and is doing some damage with knees to the body.
Brown looks winded!
Brown misses with the head strike.
Brown is looking to score with knees to the body. Maybe he'll change it up and go body then head. Mejia is defending well for now.
Brown gets underhooks to prevent Mejia's takedown attempt.
Mejia is trying to drag Brown to the mat but Brown just about manages to keep his footing. He used the cage to his advantage there.
Mejia is looking to take this one to the mat.
That's three failed takedown attempts in the round for King Mejia. That's going to take a lot out of him.

Brown breaks the clinch and we return to the middle of the mat.

Brown fakes with an overhand right and moves in to clinch with Mejia, pushing him back against the cage.
Brown lands with a left to the head.

That's four minutes gone in the round.
Mejia jumps guard but Brown stands there with Mejia around his waist. Mejia gives up and drops back to his feet. We remain in the clinch.

Brown's corner calls for him to break the clinch, which he does.

The fight moves into the clinch position.

Brown is fighting off a takedown attempt but Mejia is just too persistent for him and manages to trip Brown to the mat. Brown regains guard as soon as the fighters hit the mat.
This has been an exciting period of action!
Mejia controls the pace of the fight for a moment.
Brown is trying to stand up but he's not managed so far.

Brown is working an open guard so Mejia takes the opportunity to get back to his feet.
Mejia avoids a lazy jab quite easily.
Mejia shoots in for a takedown - he's clinched up with Brown but Brown pushes him off and we're back to square one.
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

Shay Brown dominated that round.
The fighters get back to their feet, the hooter sounds and we're back to the action!



Brown pushes Mejia up against the cage in a clinch.
Shay Brown seems to be working more effectively in the clinch in the fight so far.
Mejia wants a takedown but no success here.
Brown goes for a body shot but it's blocked.

Mejia lands a nice trip takedown into half guard.
Brown has been the more effective fighter overall so far.
Brown wants to sweep but Mejia has passed to side control!
Brown is pushing Mejia's head away, looking to escape. Mejia manages to hold on to the position though.
The fighters are pressed up against the cage, both looking to find a bit of space to work.
We've had a slow start to the round here - hopefully the action picks up.
Brown tries to slip a leg under to move to half guard but Mejia presses down on the leg and jumps into full mount!
Brown has given up his back, trying to stand up. Not clever.
A bit of a pause in the action here. Mejia controlling the positon.

Brown is trying to get back to his feet but he's not managed it yet.
Mejia trying to secure his dominant position for a moment - making sure Brown doesn't escape.
Mejia is hanging on to Brown's back as he tries to escape.
Mejia has good solid back control here.

That's two minutes gone in the round.
The crowd are getting on the fighters' backs, as the pace has dropped off in the last minute or so.
Brown trying to control the hands but Mejia won't let him.
Brown is breathing heavily.
A bit of a pause in the action here. Mejia controlling the positon.

That's three minutes gone in the round.
Brown is trying to get back to his feet but Mejia has full control of the position and if anything, Brown has just worked his way into a worse spot.
I really don't envy Brown right now.
Mejia will need to keep those long limbs tucked in whilst he's on the ground, to prevent any submissions.
Mejia is looking cool and calm here, just waiting for a good opportunity to attack and finish the fight from this dominant position.
Brown wants to escape the position.
You know, I was talking to some of our celebrities at ringside tonight and they were split right down the middle on who was going to win this fight.

My god... these two guys really need to pick up the pace or everyone will leave to go get a beer.
Boooooooooooooooooooo!!! God, this has been a terrible round. Come on you two, sort yourselves out!
Mejia's ground tactics aren't going to win him many fans. Let's hope he's got fireworks for us if he gets back to his feet because he's not doing much on the ground.
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

King Mejia dominated that second round.
The referee calls time. The cornermen exit stage left and we're back to business. This is the final round!


Brown's corner calls for a 1-2. Brown obliges with the 1 part as he scores the single shot and moves back out of range.

Brown pushes Mejia up against the cage in a clinch.
Mejia is working for takedown but Brown is calmly controlling the position for now.
Mejia tries to score a body lock takedown but Brown shows good agility there to stay on his feet.
Mejia tries to jump guard but he falls flat on his backside. Brown smiles and moves away.

Brown is trying to slow down the pace of the fight but Mejia is keeping busy.
Brown pushes Mejia back against the cage and unloads with a body punch.

Mejia blocks a couple of punches on the inside.
A short right from Brown on the inside.
A knee to the head by Brown.
Brown tried to land a shot to the body but connects with Mejia's elbow.
Brown unloads a knee to the mid-section.
Brown takes a big intake of breath there - he's definitely tired.
Mejia has a body lock and is looking for a takedown. Brown is bouncing around trying to prevent the takedown and somehow he has indeed managed to stay on his feet.

Mejia is trying to pull guard but Brown turns him against the cage and we stay in the clinch.
Mejia is working on a leg, looking for a takedown but Brown is defending well.
Brown unloads a knee to the mid-section. Mejia lets out a prehistoric sounding urrrrgh.
The referee is keeping an eye on Brown - much more stalling and he will separate the fighters.
Mejia takes a knee to the side of the body.
Brown lands with a short shot to the head.
Brown scores with a hook to the body.
Brown scores with a nice hook to the head.

This has been an exciting period of action!
Brown lands a left hand.
Brown lands a nice looking hook to the body, against the cage.

Brown breaks from the clinch.
Brown scores with a nice strike.
Mejia on the wrong end of a nice low kick. He's acting like it's no big deal but he doesn't want to take many more of those.
Brown cracks the inside of Mejia's front leg.

Brown fakes with an overhand right and moves in to clinch with Mejia, pushing him back against the cage.
Brown trying to land knees to the body.

Mejia successfully pulls guard.
Mejia looking for a sweep. Not yet Mejia, not yet.
Brown wants to stand but Mejia has a closed guard, so he can't escape.

That's three minutes gone in the round.
Brown looking to sit in guard and control but Mejia gets the butterfly guard and sweeps. He's now in the guard on the top.


Mejia stands and steps away. Brown gets to his feet too and we're back to the striking game.

Mejia moves into the clinch successfully.

Mejia drags the fight down to the ground.
Brown tries to stand but Mejia is controlling from the bottom.

That's four minutes gone in the round.
Brown wants to stand and escape but instead Mejia has hit a sweep and he's now on top in guard.

Mejia stays in close to Brown's body and controls the position.
King Mejia overall seems to be getting the better of the ground position in the fight so far.

And that's the end of the fight!
Shay Brown comfortably won the final round on my scorecard.
I think Brown has won this one but let's see whether the judges agree with me. Over to the ring announcer for the scorecards.
