PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a welterweight MMA rules bout between Robbie Lawler (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class) and Ricky Clausen (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class). Both these guys have solid standup skills and neither is particularly fantastic on the ground, so let's hope for a nice standup war!

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the welterweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 3 - 4 - 0, fighting out of Las Vegas, Robbie Lawler!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 0 - 0 - 0, fighting out of Las Vegas, Ricky Clausen!
The judges for this bout are Wesley Smith, Daniel Franklin and Stewart Dunkirk.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!
Clausen with a poor takedown
and Lawler counters with a nice uppercut.
Lawler changes levels and scores with a jab to the body.
Ricky Clausen seems to be the more aggressive standup fighter in this bout.
Clausen moves in looking to clinch but Lawler pushes him off.
Lawler misses with a wild body shot.
Clausen is trying to avoid his opponent's strikes and get into the clinch.
A nice leg kick lands there from Lawler.
Lawler looks to have improved his striking defense since last time we saw him fight.
Lawler pulls out of a head kick attempt.

The fighters are starting to get a bit slippery now, which will make submissions a bit more difficult.

Lawler bucks up whilst keeping hold of a body lock, managing to reverse the position. Now he's in top in Clausen's guard.

Lawler is looking to pass into half guard but Clausen pushes him away with his feet and jumps on top - now Clausen is in guard.

Lawler can't keep his opponent in guard - Clausen advances to half guard, no doubt looking to mount.
Clausen prevents Lawler from standing back up.
The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing.

Lawler is refusing to be controlled, as Clausen sits in half guard.

The two fighters exchange a few words. I couldn't hear what they were saying but maybe it's more fun if you make it up yourself. Clausen connects with a nice short shot to Lawler's temple.
Lawler is looking to get back to full guard here but Clausen has managed to pass to side control instead.

The referee calls for the fighters to work.

Clausen seems to be working for a kimura but Lawler defends the submission attempt.
Lawler is really dominating this fight. Is there anything that Clausen can do to turn this around?

That was a close second round but I would say that Robbie Lawler will probably get the nod.

Clausen shoots in for a takedown. He's persisting with it as Lawler sprawls well. Lawler wins this battle and keeps the fight standing. Clausen gets slowly back to his feet.

Lawler lands a glancing blow to the side of Clausen's head.
Clausen shoots and misses
and Lawler counters nicely by changing levels and landing a hook to the body.
Clausen closes this distance looking for a takedown but Lawler circles away.
It looked like Lawler was looking amped, ready to throw a big counter but didn't commit.

Clausen pivots as if he's going to throw a leg kick but stops half way.

Clausen uses some good footwork to avoid the body shot by Lawler.

Clausen only half commits to the counter leg kick.
Lawler lands with a nice body punch.
Clausen on the wrong end of a nice low kick. He's acting like it's no big deal but he doesn't want to take many more of those.
Clausen fakes high and swings low for a body shot but Lawler manages to avoid it.
Clausen shoots in but Lawler avoids the takedown attempt easily.
Clausen's leg has a nasty welt from taking a succession of leg kicks. That must be slowing him down.
Lawler throws a head kick that looked like it stung.
Clausen changes levels and looks for a double leg takedown. Lawler tries to avoid it but Clausen manages to keep hold of a leg and drag Lawler to the ground. Lawler escapes though and pops straight back up to his feet.
Clausen takes a thudding leg kick, right into the meat of the thigh.

Lawler swung with a counter right hand that didn't connect.
Clausen tries for a takedown but Lawler sees it coming a mile off and avoids it easily.
Lawler misses with a body shot. Nice footwork from Clausen.
Lawler moves into range and lands a nice leg kick.
Lawler loads up on a big right hand but Clausen slips the punch.
Lawler throws a right and a left that both miss.
Jab, jab by Lawler - just one landing.
Robbie Lawler is fighting for a decision here - he's started to take the cautious approach.
This is a great period of action - very entertaining stuff!

Well I reckon that's a shut out for Lawler, winning every round. Will the judges agree? They are the ones who matter, even if they are often depressingly incompetent. Over to the ring announcer for the scorecards.
