PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a welterweight MMA rules bout between Gordon Burks (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class) and Jay Rome (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class). The crowd seem to be enjoying Rome's choice of entrance music: Ultimate. I'm sure you'll be fascinated to know that I was talking to some pointless Z list celebrity before the fight and he thought that Jay Rome was going to win. Let's see if he was right.

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the welterweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 0 - 0 - 0, fighting out of London, Gordon Burks!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 0 - 1 - 0, fighting out of London, Jay Rome!
The judges for this bout are James Glass, Steven Brown and Phil Schofield.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!

Burks gets caught on his heels momentarily as he allows Rome to score an easy takedown into full guard.
Rome won't allow Burks to get back to his feet.
Rome trying to control but Burks is working from the bottom.
Burks has control of Rome's left arm, preventing Rome from doing any damage.

Burks manages to wriggle out and sneak his way back up to his feet, so the fighters are now clinched up against the cage.
We've had a slow start to the round here - hopefully the action picks up.

Rome manages to pull guard.
Burks might be looking to lock onto one of his opponent's long limbs for a submission, whilst we're on the ground.

Rome looking for subs off his back but Burks has passed one foot through into half guard.
Rome looks like he's trying to stand up.

Burks is taking a breather. Rome says something to him but it's hard to make out. Perhaps he's telling him to get on with it and actually do something.

A few boos can be heard. I'm sure they will multiply if the fighters don't pick up the pace.
Burks seems to have a rather negative gameplan on the ground. He seems keen to just score the takedown and hold down Rome for as long as he can get away with.
Rome wants to sweep but Burks has passed to side control!
Rome tries to control the position but he's not in luck - Burks easily slips into full mount!

Rome keeping his composure momentarily, calmly looking to get back to half guard.

Burks's ground tactics aren't going to win him many fans. Let's hope he's got fireworks for us if he gets back to his feet because he's not doing much on the ground.

Burks looking for an armbar but decides to keep the dominant position instead.

Well. There's a bit of a lull in the action here and the crowd are starting to get restless.
Burks controlling from the full mount.
Boooooooooooooooooooo!!! God, this has been a terrible round. Come on you two, sort yourselves out!
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

Gordon Burks dominated that round.
The fighters get back to their feet, the hooter sounds and we're back to the action!


Burks fakes high and swings low for a body shot but Rome manages to avoid it.

Rome has closed the distance and engaged Burks in a clinch.
A short right hand to the side of the head by Rome.

Burks manages to break the clinch.

Rome feints and as Burks raises his hands in defense, Rome changes levels and drives through with a takedown into guard.

Burks wriggles free and stands up.

Rome takes the fight into the clinch.
This is a great period of action - very entertaining stuff!
Rome blocks a knee to the body. He'll have a nicely bruised forearm in the morning.
Burks avoiding damage.
A right handed body shot lands from Burks.
Rome on the defensive, avoiding the knees to the body.

Burks pressing his opponent against the cage.
Burks is looking to control Rome's arms but Rome gets an underhook and turns him. Now Burks has his back to the cage.
Rome is trying to break free.
Both guys are working to get underhooks.
Burks manages to get underhooks and slows down the pace for a moment.

Rome manages to pull guard.
Burks stays in close to Rome's body and controls the position.
Rome is trying to stand up but he's not managed so far.
Burks slows down the pace of the fight for a moment. He'll need to remain active if he doesn't want to see the fight stood back up.

That's two minutes gone in the round.
The crowd are showing their displeasure at the lack of action as loud boos ring out around the arena.
Rome is trying to keep Burks in close.
Burks stopping the sweep attempt from Rome.
Burks stays in close to Rome's body and controls the position.
Rome wants to sweep but no luck.

The referee decides to stand the fighters back up.
Rome is breathing heavily.

Rome shoots in for a takedown! He's got it and he's managed to land in side control! That's better than Rome was expecting from the takedown attempt, I'm sure!

Burks throws Rome to one side and escapes!

Rome wants to get back to his feet but Burks is dominant here and he's now got Rome's back!

Burks working for a RNC but it's not happening just yet.
The crowd cheering loudly, showing their appreciation for the quality fight we're seeing here.
Burks biding his time, controlling Rome.

Burks patiently working for the choke. Which fighter will keep their nerve here?

Burks is working for a rear naked choke. Rome is not defending it well and Burks has tightened it up quickly! This could be all over! Rome refuses to tap and goes to sleep, forcing the referee to intervene. A little trickle of blood came out of Rome's nose as his head slumped to the floor. That is naaaasty!

Ladies and gentlemen, after 4:43 of round 2, we have a winner by way of Submission (RNC). Gordon Burks!
