PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a bantamweight MMA rules bout between Lionel Weiss (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class) and Johnny Jones (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class). I can't wait for this one - let's get the fighter introductions out of the way and get this one started!

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the bantamweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 1 - 5 - 0, fighting out of Montreal, Lionel Weiss!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 0 - 0 - 0, fighting out of Montreal, Johnny Jones!
The judges for this bout are Robert Douchet, Alec Ball and Yves DeLean.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!

Jones shoots in and gets a takedown into Weiss's guard.
Jones controls the pace of the fight for a moment.
Weiss keeping full guard, as Jones tries to pass.

Jones got a little sloppy there for a moment and Weiss has worked his way into a loose triangle - can he finish it?! No, Jones has managed to get both his arms back between Weiss's legs - danger averted.

Jones gets to his feet. Weiss looking to butt scoot but the ref puts an end to that. On your feet son!

Jones fakes an overhand right and shoots for a takedown. Weiss sprawls well initially but Jones persists and gets the takedown into half guard.
The fighters are pressed up against the cage, both looking to find a bit of space to work.

Jones is trying for a guillotine from the top but the pressure isn't in the right place so Weiss is just riding it out for now. Jones eventually gives up the hold.
We've had a slow start to the round here - hopefully the action picks up.
Jones tries to stand and escape but Weiss is controlling the position.

Jones trying to control from Weiss's half guard. Weiss has other ideas though and has regained full guard.
Weiss really does look like a pencil wearing a pair of gloves. Let's hope he has a gameplan to suit that ridiculous body shape.

Jones is holding a leg here, probably looking for an ankle lock - he drops back and goes for it! Weiss is in trouble! Is it all over??? No! Weiss has escaped and now he's on top!


Weiss decides to stand up and beckons his opponent to follow.
A head kick misses from Jones.
Weiss is looking to counter the offense by Jones and move into the clinch.

Excellent takedown into side control there by Jones.
Weiss tries to improve position but can't.
The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing.

Weiss looking to hit a scissor sweep but Jones is one step ahead there.

Jones drops back, looking for a kneebar! Weiss looks panicked! The fighters roll across the mat, one looking to finish, one looking to escape. Weiss looks to have wriggled free... Yes, he's got his leg free and he's dived into side control! Good work there from Weiss!


Weiss decides to take the fight back to the feet.

Jones gets to the clinch - let's see what his plan is here.

Weiss pushes off and circles away, back to the middle of the mat.
Jones goes to the watering hole and comes back with a big thumbs up from the judges as he scores a three punch combo.


Weiss is rocked!

Jones rushes Weiss and pushes him back against the cage in a clinch.
Oh Weiss is still all over the place! His legs are completely gone! Will he be able to recover?!!
Jones tries to land a knee to the head but misses.

Jones is trying to trip Weiss. He has hold of a leg but Weiss is hopping around, keeping his balance for the moment. Jones persists though and gets the takedown into guard.
Weiss wants to sweep here but Jones controlling him for the moment.
We've seen a great period of action over the last minute or so - credit to both fighters for going all out!
Weiss wants to improve his position but instead Jones has moved into half guard.
Weiss is trying to get back to full guard.
Jones is taking a breather. Weiss says something to him but it's hard to make out. Perhaps he's telling him to get on with it and actually do something.
Weiss is looking to regain full guard. Not this time though.
Weiss is working hard here to advance position.
Jones seems very keen to just sit and control from half guard but Weiss does not like that idea so much and is remaining active off his back.
Weiss seems to have got his legs back now.
Weiss is looking for a sweep. Jones is wise to his cunning plan and keeps the top position.
Weiss manages to get to full guard.

Weiss is looking for a guillotine. You can't force these things though and Jones defends well.
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

Johnny Jones dominated that round.
The fighters get back to their feet, the hooter sounds and we're back to the action!


Weiss shoots in for a takedown - he's clinched up with Jones but Jones pushes him off and we're back to square one.
Jones changes levels for a counter takedown but doesn't follow through with his attempt.

Both fighters working to control the clinch.
Weiss is trying to slow down the pace of the fight but Jones is keeping busy.

Jones drags the fight down to the ground.

Jones manages to wriggle out and sneak his way back up to his feet, so the fighters are now clinched up against the cage.

Jones breaks the clinch and we're back to striking at distance.

Weiss is trying to push Jones away but Jones has him pressed against the cage, so he's going nowhere.

Weiss struggles to land a body shot inside as Jones controls his hands.

Jones tightens his grip and picks Weiss up, before dumping him to the ground. Weiss manages to land in guard.
Jones throwing elbows and punches but not connecting, as Weiss works some decent striking defense from the bottom.
Jones has been the more effective fighter overall so far.
Jones wants to control from the top but Weiss keeps moving.
Weiss has a closed guard, preventing Jones from standing up.
Weiss wants to sweep but no luck.
Jones throws a big right hand that misses.

Weiss is active off his back here, looking for submissions.
Jones content to strike from guard, landing some decent shots.

Jones drops back looking for a heel hook - he quickly realises he's not going to get it but Weiss manages to dive on top of him before he can escape and now Jones has Weiss in his guard.

Weiss postures up to throw the ground and pound strikes but they don't connect.

Jones is throwing his legs up, looking for submissions. Weiss is aware though and is defending well.
Jones is breathing heavily.
Weiss would like to get this fight back to the feet but can't get free from the closed guard.
Weiss working in close now, lands a nice elbow to the side of Jones's head.
Jones looking to hit a scissor sweep but Weiss is one step ahead there.

Weiss stands up from Jones's guard - Weiss perhaps looking for a knockout.

Weiss moves into the clinch.
Weiss scores with a shoulder strike.

Jones pulls guard effortlessly.
Weiss trying to control but Jones is working from the bottom.
Jones looking for a sweep. Not yet Jones, not yet.

Weiss stands up and waves to Jones to follow him.
Weiss shoots for a double leg takedown but Jones sprawls well. He's pushed Weiss's face into the mat and manages to get back to his feet relatively easily.
Weiss sets himself, and Jones steps forward looking for the clinch! Weiss avoids it this time.

Weiss tries to clinch up.
Jones circles away from the clinch attempt.
Jones looked like he wanted to counter with a punch but didn't throw it.
Jones throws a nice looking combination but Weiss bobs and weaves to avoid any damage.

Weiss moves into the clinch successfully.
Weiss trying to control the position but instead, Jones has worked for underhooks and has pushed Weiss into the cage.

Weiss wants to get back to striking at distance but Jones won't allow it.

The crowd are getting pretty annoyed with Weiss for his constant stalling in the clinch and are voicing their displeasure.

Johnny Jones showed his class in that round. I'd imagine he'll take it on all the scorecards.

Jones shoots in for a takedown and gets it. Let's see what he's got on the mat.
Weiss wants to sweep here but Jones controlling him for the moment.
Weiss throwing strikes off his back to little effect.
Jones controlling from the guard. I say controlling but really, he's stalling.
Jones's corner are shouting for him to control the position and he seems happy to oblige.

The referee is pacing around the two fighters - he looks like he's thinking about a standup.

Weiss has a loose triangle. He'll be looking to tighten that up but Jones can see exactly what he's planning and manages to posture up and free himself.

The referee has stepped in and called for a break in the action. We'll restart on the feet.

Jones closes the distance and clinches.

Weiss breaks the clinch and we return to the middle of the mat.

Jones is looking for a takedown here. He's shot in and has managed to get it, finishing up in Weiss's half guard.
Jones is looking to take a break and control but Weiss is keeping him honest, looking to work from the bottom.

Weiss tries to roll over but Jones keeps him under control.
Both fighters are breathing heavily.
Jones scoring with strikes to the body and head.
Weiss is pressing down on Jones's left leg trying to get back to full guard. He's managed it.

Jones decides he's had enough of playing guard and decides to stand. Come on Weiss, up you get!

Jones closes the distance and gets a trip takedown into side control. Weiss quickly recovers to half guard.
Jones works his foot free and advances to mount.
Weiss stops Jones from taking his back. Still, being mounted isn't any better.

Jones wants to control but Weiss is keeping him busy.

Neither fighter has done anything of merit for a good minute or two here and the crowd are not happy about it.

Weiss throws his legs up looking for a submission but Jones uses it to pass to side control.
Jones tries to advance to mount but Weiss denies him.
Jones is pausing for a moment. What's he doing? It looks like he's clearing his nose. Oh dude! He's shot a load of snot all down Weiss's shoulder. That is not cool.
Weiss is looking to regain half guard here but Jones keeps moving and retains side control.
Boooooooooooooooooooo!!! God, this has been a terrible round. Come on you two, sort yourselves out!
Lionel Weiss has stepped it up - he knows he needs a finish here!
Johnny Jones is fighting for a decision - hopefully he's judged it right and he's actually winning the fight.

Johnny Jones comfortably won the final round on my scorecard.
Well Jones has outworked and out performed his opponent in all aspects of the game today. He was simply too good and the decision should be no more than a formality. Over to the ring announcer for the scorecards.
