PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a light heavyweight MMA rules bout between Gilbert Day (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class) and Corey Laird (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class). Corey Laird will no doubt be trying to keep this one on the feet, where he has a distinct advantage.

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the light heavyweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 1 - 2 - 0, fighting out of Las Vegas, Gilbert Day!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 0 - 0 - 0, fighting out of Las Vegas, Corey Laird!
The judges for this bout are Tiny Johnson, Robert Twigg and Cecil Peabody.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!
Laird feints a jab promting Day to slip. Laird then demonstrates his capabilities by jabbing again. Day slips again and ducks right into an uppercut.


It looks like Gilbert Day has been cut.
Day shoots in but no luck this time.
Corey Laird seems to be the more aggressive standup fighter in this bout.
Laird thuds a left hand into Day's body.
Day throws a looping left and ducks down for a takedown. He's got his arms around Laird's waist but Laird gets an underhook and avoids the takedown by throwing Day off to one side.
Laird shoots in with a takedown attempt and he has Day pinned against the cage. Day gets the underhooks and manages to circle away.
Laird tries a switch kick but it misses it's target.
The fight stays on the outside here - Laird looks like he's thinking about clinching though.
We've had a slow start to the round here - hopefully the action picks up.
Laird shoots in for a takedown. He's persisting with it as Day sprawls well. Day wins this battle and keeps the fight standing. Laird gets slowly back to his feet.

Laird fails miserably with a takedown attempt.
Gilbert Day has stuffed three takedown attempts in the round now. That's going to take a lot out of Corey Laird.

Laird fakes with an overhand right and moves in to clinch with Day, pushing him back against the cage.

Laird successfully pulls guard.
Day is sitting in guard, working some ground and pound.
Laird utilising some decent striking defenses from the guard, preventing the ground and pound.
Day connects with a couple of short punches.

Day is trying to work a guillotine from the top, or something like that? Don't know how he thinks he's going to get a finish from there.

Laird looking for a guillotine here but Day defends easily.
Laird managing to control the position.
Day really is a fat lump.

Day is holding a leg here, probably looking for an ankle lock - he drops back and goes for it! Laird is in trouble! Is it all over??? No! Laird has escaped and now he's on top!

The fighters are pressed up against the cage, both looking to find a bit of space to work.
Laird stands up out of Day's guard for a moment - Day manages to land a nice upkick.

Day is working an open guard so Laird takes the opportunity to get back to his feet.
Laird misses with a head kick.
Day tries to counter with a takedown but Laird is quick to defend against it.
Laird scores with a big left there. The judges will like that one.
Nice sprawl there from Laird as Day shoots in.

Laird closes the distance and clinches.

That's three minutes gone in the round.
Laird looking for a takedown.
Laird lands a right hand.

Laird jumps guard and drags Day to the mat. He's obviously going to be looking for submissions off his back.

Day has gone for a leg lock! Laird slips out almost immediately though and dives into Day's guard.

Laird tries to free his leg and advance position but Day is retaining full guard.
Day keeping moving, preventing Laird from controlling successfully.

Laird stands and steps away. Day gets to his feet too and we're back to the striking game.

Laird has closed the distance and engaged Day in a clinch.
Day tries to pull guard but Laird holds him up against the cage and eventually Day drops back down to his feet.

Day pushes off and circles away, back to the middle of the mat.

Laird defends well against a solid takedown attempt from Day.
Day missing with a left hand there. Laird was out of range so wasted energy throwing that one.
Laird shoots in but doesn't get the takedown

and Day counters by moving into the clinch. Good anticipation by Day.
Laird wants a takedown.
Day tries a shoulder strike but it doesn't do any damage.
Laird prevents Day from breaking the clinch.

Day's corner calls for him to break the clinch, which he does.

Laird clinches.
The crowd are loving this. Great action here.
Laird is looking for a takedown up against the cage. Day gets underhooks though and prevents the takedown attempt.

Laird manages to break the clinch.
Laird fails to land the takedown.
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

The cut man is working on Gilbert Day's cut.
Well, the break between rounds is over. Let's get back to the scrappin!


Laird tries to close the distance and clinch up against the cage but Day paws at him with a jab and circles away.
Laird throws a sloppy head kick

and Day decides to take the opportunity to score a takedown. He's landed in Laird's guard.
Laird avoiding any damage from the ground and pound.

Day thinks about going for a leg but decides against it, in order to maintain the position.

Day gets to his feet. Laird looking to butt scoot but the ref puts an end to that. On your feet son!
Laird goes for a double leg but Day avoids the attempt and the two fighters end up clinched against the cage as Day continues to drive forward.
Day changes levels and looks for a double leg takedown. Laird tries to avoid it but Day manages to keep hold of a leg and drag Laird to the ground. Laird escapes though and pops straight back up to his feet.
Laird lets it all go there with a big combo counter but none of the punches connected.
Laird is looking to clinch but Day is avoiding it.
We've had a slow start to the round here - hopefully the action picks up.
Laird tries to close the distance and clinch but Day swats him to one side with an open hand palm strike and circles away.
A really sloppy takedown attempt there from Day.

Laird has his takedown stuffed
letting Day counter with a right hand.
Day looks for a takedown here. Will he get it? Laird is fending him off so far but Day persists. Nope, Laird circles away and we're back to standing.
Laird lets it all go there with a big combo counter but none of the punches connected.

Laird shoots for a takedown but Day saw that one coming a mile off and avoided it easily.

Day has gone for a leg lock! Laird slips out almost immediately though and dives into Day's guard.

Laird loading up with the ground and pound but he's missing more than he's landing in this flurry.

Laird pressing down on his opponent's thigh, looking to pass guard. Day is keeping the position for now.
Day is adopting a defensive guard.
Day knows he needs to get back to his feet asap. He's simply no match for Laird on the ground.

Day keeping moving, preventing Laird from controlling successfully.
Laird stands and throws Day's legs to the side, diving into side control.

Laird tries for an arm triangle. That looks pretty tight to me. Is this one over!?! Possibly, maybe, no Laird has let go of the choke. Obviously it wasn't as tight as we thought!

The crowd are showing their displeasure at the lack of action as loud boos ring out around the arena.
Laird working away.
Day tries to buck Laird off but Laird is having none of it.
Day struggling a bit here.
Laird prevents Day from escaping the position.
Day is looking for a sweep.
Boooooooooooooooooooo!!! God, this has been a terrible round. Come on you two, sort yourselves out!
Laird slows the pace down.
Day is trying to get back to half guard.
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

That was a close second round but I would say that Gilbert Day will probably get the nod.

The fighters get back to their feet, the hooter sounds and we're back to the action! This is the final round!


Day fakes high and shoots in for a takedown but Laird avoids it really well and circles away.
Laird is definitely looking for the counter takedowns here.

Day tries to sprawl but Laird drives through with a takedown into half guard.

Day manages to create a bit of space in order to work his way back to his feet. Laird keeps hold of his opponent and drives him back against the cage.
We've had a slow start to the round here - hopefully the action picks up.
Day landing knees to the body.
Laird lands a hook to the body. It's hard to tell if that hurt Day or not.
Day misses with the head strike.
Laird looking to stall.

Day has managed to pull guard. Let's see whether he can work an aggressive guard. It will also be interesting to see what tactics Laird uses from the top position.

Both fighters are breathing heavily.

Day manages to escape and get back to his feet.

Laird is looking for a takedown here. He's shot in and has managed to get it, finishing up in Day's half guard.
Day tries to push off, looking to stand up, but Laird manages to move to mount!

Laird throws an elbow from mount that misses. Lucky escape for Day because Laird loaded up on that one.
BOOM! Laird connects with a massive shot to the dome!

Day wants to hold on but Laird pushes him away.

Laird looking for a guillotine from mount but Day is having none of it.
Laird avoids the attempt from Day to control.
Laird cracks Day with a nasty head shot there - the crowd let out an audible gasp there, as the noise reverberated around the arena.
The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing.

Laird lands a couple of nice shots there from mount.
Laird throwing sloppy strikes here. Perhaps if he tightened up his striking from such a dominant position, he'd be able to finish easier.

Day might be looking to lock onto one of his opponent's long limbs for a submission, whilst we're on the ground.
Laird looking to control and managing it successfully.

Laird tucks in and makes sure he doesn't lose the dominant position.
Laird trying to control but Day is having none of it.
Day tries to lock up and control but Laird gives him a forearm to the face and pushes him away.
Laird landing strikes from the mount and Day is in trouble!
Laird content just to control the position here.

Laird looking for an armbar but decides to keep the dominant position instead.
Laird throwing sloppy strikes here. Perhaps if he tightened up his striking from such a dominant position, he'd be able to finish easier.

Corey Laird comfortably won the final round on my scorecard.
Well Laird has outworked and out performed his opponent in all aspects of the game today. He was simply too good and the decision should be no more than a formality. Over to the ring announcer for the scorecards.
