PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a welterweight MMA rules bout between Lacy Fry (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class) and Karpo Munakas (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class). Munakas comes into a darkened arena with his song building. Elvis Presley - I Can't Help Falling In Love kicks in, the lights come on and the crowd goes wild! What a showman! Lacy Fry has the edge in experience - let's see if he can make that count tonight.

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the welterweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 0 - 5 - 1, fighting out of St Petersburg, Lacy Fry!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 2 - 1 - 0, fighting out of St Petersburg, Karpo Munakas!
The judges for this bout are Vladimir Khabensky, Illya Tyunina and Igor Prikhodko.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!
Munakas shoots in and drives through. Fry sprawls well.
Fry throwing a counter right hand but Munakas manages to avoid it.

Munakas has Fry up against the cage in a clinch.

Munakas breaks from the clinch.
Munakas shoots in for a takedown. "Ole!" shouts Fry as he jumps to the side.
Fry stuffs the takedown attempt from Munakas. Munakas gets slowly back to his feet.
Lacy Fry has stuffed three takedown attempts in the round now. That's going to take a lot out of Karpo Munakas.
We've had a slow start to the round here - hopefully the action picks up.

Munakas gets the takedown into side control.
We could do with one of the fighters taking the initiative a bit more on the ground - they're both waiting to capitalize on a mistake.

Fry is putting a lot of effort into getting back to his feet here.
Fry tries to get back to half guard but can't.

Munakas tries to get to his feet but he's trapped momentarily.

Munakas is looking to finish here, going for an Americana. Fry knows the correct defense though, so he's OK.

Munakas tries for an arm triangle. That looks pretty tight to me. Is this one over!?! Possibly, maybe, no Munakas has let go of the choke. Obviously it wasn't as tight as we thought!

My god... these two guys really need to pick up the pace or everyone will leave to go get a beer.
Fry wants to control but Munakas postures up.
Fry is working to avoid the ground and pound but Munakas connects with a decent elbow.
The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing.

Munakas stands up and we're back to a striking position.

Fry defends well against a solid takedown attempt from Munakas.
Munakas looks winded!

Munakas gets a takedown into half guard.

Fry pushes Munakas off and gets back to his feet.
Munakas fakes high and shoots in for a takedown but Fry avoids it really well and circles away.
Fry seem to be loading up, looking for a big counter.

Munakas gets his takedown attempt stuffed easily
and Fry counters with a series of strikes. Munakas will be more careful next time no doubt.

Fry shoots in for a takedown and gets it. Let's see what he's got on the mat.
Fry with a flurry of punches that miss.

Munakas throws his legs up looking for a submission but Fry uses it to pass to side control.

Fry tries for an arm triangle. That looks pretty tight to me. Is this one over!?! Possibly, maybe, no Fry has let go of the choke. Obviously it wasn't as tight as we thought!
Fry throws a knee to the body but it doesn't do much damage.
Munakas tries to escape but Fry is in control.
Munakas is trying to get back to half guard.
The fighters are pressed up against the cage, both looking to find a bit of space to work.
Fry working away.
Fry tries to land with some ground and pound but misses.
Fry misses with the ground and pound.
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

Lacy Fry dominated that round.
The fighters' corners scream their final instructions, as the referee calls time. Here we go, back to the action!



Fry shoots in with a lovely double leg takedown. Munakas manages to land in full guard to minimise the damage.
Munakas wants to get back to his feet but he's too absorbed in his own little project and Fry manages to pass to side control.
Fry is really dominating this fight. Is there anything that Munakas can do to turn this around?

Fry slips a nice elbow through Munakas's hands, connecting with Munakas's forehead.
Munakas controlling the position well.
We've had a slow start to the round here - hopefully the action picks up.
Munakas wants to control but Fry is keeping busy and won't allow it.

Fry throwing shots but Munakas is blocking nicely.
The fighters are starting to perspire pretty heavily.

Munakas is positioning himself well to prevent Fry advancing to mount.
Fry thumps the canvas. Not on purpose obviously - he just missed Munakas's head.
Munakas tries to get to full guard but Fry has control of the leg.
Fry not throwing his punches with enough precision this time.
Munakas has no desire to be mounted, so is trying to control. Fry is working away from the top position though.
Munakas is concentrating on defense, preventing Fry from advancing position.
Lacy Fry overall seems to be getting the better of the ground position in the fight so far.

The crowd are hurling abuse towards the fighters... You can hardly blame them though because there isn't a lot going on in the fight.
The referee must be thinking about standing these guys back up.
Munakas gets full guard.
Fry lands a couple of digs.
Fry in full guard, throwing the ground and pound. No damage this time.
Munakas tries to strike from the bottom.

The referee decides to stand the fighters back up.
Munakas tries to score a power double leg takedown but Fry sees that one coming and sprawls well. That will dishearten Munakas somewhat.
Munakas is breathing heavily.

Fry shoots in but doesn't get the takedown

and Munakas counters by clinching up.
Munakas is defending well against a takedown attempt.
Fry letting Munakas take a breather here.
Munakas is looking to score with knees to the body. Maybe he'll change it up and go body then head. Fry is defending well for now.

Munakas lands a nice trip takedown into half guard.
Munakas wants to take a breather but Fry is having none of it.
Fry looks like he's trying to stand up.

Fry is looking to sinch up a guillotine here but Munakas pulls his head out easily.
Fry is trying to maintain the position but Munakas is very close to passing his half guard.

Fry really does look like a pencil wearing a pair of gloves. Let's hope he has a gameplan to suit that ridiculous body shape.

Fry has been looking to land a fair amount of strikes on the ground. He might be looking to soften his opponent up in order to work for a submission.

Fry darts in looking for a takedown but Munakas gets double underhooks and turns Fry into the cage.

Munakas drives through with a takedown into guard.
Munakas is working Fry over from the guard. He should look to pass the guard and do a little more damage with these strikes.
Fry is looking to stand up but Munakas isn't so interested in that idea.

Fry is working actively off his back, looking to secure an arm or perhaps work for a triangle.
Fry trying to keep a closed guard but Munakas is proving a slippery customer.

Munakas has decided he wants to stand but the closed guard of Fry is proving hard to escape from.

The crowd are getting on the fighters' backs, as the pace has dropped off in the last minute or so.
Fry flails away from the bottom but he's not doing any damage.
Munakas is trying to control the action in half guard but Fry is working away on the bottom, looking perhaps to get back to full guard.
Munakas is taking a breather. Fry says something to him but it's hard to make out. Perhaps he's telling him to get on with it and actually do something.
If this pace continues, the referee will definitely step in and force a standup.
Munakas is nestled in close to Fry, controlling him well. He's worked in a nice elbow to the side of the head as well, for good measure.
Munakas is trying to control. Fry wants to improve his position but can't escape this time.

Munakas is sneakily working for an arm triangle but Fry sees it coming and defends easily.

Munakas is working for a submission of some sort.
Fry has no desire to be mounted, so is trying to control. Munakas is working away from the top position though.

Munakas is trying to get back to his feet now but his leg is trapped.
The referee wants the fighters to be more active or he's going to reset them on the feet.

Karpo Munakas comfortably won the final round on my scorecard.
I think Munakas has won this one but let's see whether the judges agree with me. Over to the ring announcer for the scorecards.
