Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the lightweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 0 - 0 - 0, fighting out of Las Vegas, Mike Matthes!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 4 - 9 - 0, fighting out of Las Vegas, Chris Barath!
The judges for this bout are Robert Twigg, Tiny Johnson and Frank Dennis.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!
Nice sprawl there from Matthes as Barath shoots in.
Matthes attempts a counter takedown but Barath avoids it well and moves away.
Barath tries to close the distance and clinch but Matthes swats him to one side with an open hand palm strike and circles away.
Matthes half commits to a counter takedown before pushing away, out of range.
Barath fails with a takedown attempt from distance.
Chris Barath seems to be the more aggressive standup fighter in this bout.

Matthes shoots in for a takedown! He's got it and he's managed to land in side control! That's better than Matthes was expecting from the takedown attempt, I'm sure!
Matthes controls the position from side control.

Matthes wants to work for a kimura but he's foiled early by Barath, who protects the arm well.
We've had a slow start to the round here - hopefully the action picks up.

Matthes tries for an arm triangle. That looks pretty tight to me. Is this one over!?! Possibly, maybe, no Matthes has let go of the choke. Obviously it wasn't as tight as we thought!

Matthes thinks about going for a far side armbar but bails out and retains the dominant position instead.

That's one minute gone in the round.
A lull in the action here as Matthes stalls from top position.
Barath is not content to let Matthes control the position.
Matthes staying calm.
Matthes postures up a little and throws a couple of hammerfists but they don't connect properly.
Matthes controls the position.

Matthes is working for what looks like an arm triangle here. Barath is trying to escape and Matthes transitions quickly into an armbar! He's slapped it on tight and Barath is forced to tap! Nice work there by Matthes! Very nice indeed!

Ladies and gentlemen, after 2:59 of round 1, we have a winner by way of Submission (Armbar). Mike Matthes!
Mike Matthes was full of energy after the big win and talked about how he thinks he can do big things in this sport. The crowd were appreciative of his determination to succeed.
