PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a lightweight MMA rules bout between Darrick Rodriquez (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class) and James Powell (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class). The crowd seem to be enjoying Powell's choice of entrance music: CCR - Bad Moon Rising. James Powell will no doubt be looking to use his reach advantage to good effect.

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the lightweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 2 - 3 - 0, fighting out of London, Darrick Rodriquez!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 1 - 0 - 0, fighting out of London, James Powell!
The judges for this bout are Richard Clark, Phil Schofield and Daniel Bishop.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!
A looping hook to the body misses from Powell. Rodriquez does a little dance to reset his feet.
Powell throws a sloppy head kick and Rodriquez moves out of range easily.
Rodriquez throws a series of punches but Powell moves out of range.
Powell throws a wild combination but nothing lands.
Rodriquez appears to be looking for a big counter.
Powell avoids the head kick by Rodriquez.
Rodriquez walks straight into a jab right on the nose. That one stung - he's blinking and trying to clear his head.
Rodriquez could do with losing a few pounds - he looks very soft around the mid section, to put it politely.
Rodriquez throws a head kick but Powell moves out of range.
Powell tries to clinch but Rodriquez moves out of range.
Rodriquez throws a low kick but Powell moves out of range easily.
We've had a slow start to the round here - hopefully the action picks up.
Powell buckles his opponent's knee momentarily with a nice leg kick.
Powell tries to close the distance and clinch but Rodriquez swats him to one side with an open hand palm strike and circles away.

Powell closes the distance and clinches.

Powell escapes the clinch and we're back to striking.

No joy there for Powell, who threw a few shots but didn't land.
Powell throws a head kick that misses.
Powell moves in looking to clinch but Rodriquez pushes him off.

Rodriquez manages to sweep nicely, so he's now on top. Powell manages to get himself to full guard.

Rodriquez postures up in Powell's guard and throws a big left but Powell blocks it.
Rodriquez might be looking to lock onto one of his opponent's long limbs for a submission, whilst we're on the ground.
Rodriquez won't allow Powell to get back to his feet.

Rodriquez drops back for a leg! It's a sloppy attempt though and Rodriquez jumps back into guard quickly, to retain the dominant position.

As Powell tries to get set, Rodriquez tries to push him back and clinch up but Powell manages to avoid the attempt.

The crowd are getting on the fighters' backs, as the pace has dropped off in the last minute or so.

Rodriquez stands and steps away. Powell gets to his feet too and we're back to the striking game.

Powell is trying to push Rodriquez away but Rodriquez has him pressed against the cage, so he's going nowhere.
Rodriquez wants to take the fight to the mat but Powell manages to get underhooks and keep the fight in the clinch.
Powell stops a takedown attempt from Rodriquez.

Powell ties up his opponent against the cage and manages to drag the fight down to the ground. Powell no doubt will be looking to work submissions from his guard.

and Powell counters with a big head kick but Rodriquez shrugs it off.
Powell ducks down and throws a hook to the body.
Powell throws the kick towards the body but Rodriquez avoids it.
Rodriquez is trying to close the distance and clinch up, after that failed offence from Powell.
Powell has been the more effective fighter overall so far.

Rodriquez sets himself, and Powell steps forward looking for the clinch! Rodriquez avoids it this time.

Powell gets a takedown into half guard.
The crowd are loving this. Great action here.
Rodriquez tries to roll over but Powell keeps him under control.
Rodriquez is working for an escape here. He's hooked one of Powell's legs and he's managed to sneak out and take Powell's back!

There's not a lot going on here and the crowd are letting the fighters know they're not willing to tolerate a lack of action.

Rodriquez looking to break Powell's wrist control so he can sink in the choke. Powell remaining controlled and patient though - he really has to keep calm otherwise Rodriquez will wrap this one up with the rear naked choke!

Powell is trying to get back to his feet. He's worked up on to his knees and now he's on his feet with his head on the canvas, trying to shake Rodriquez off. It looks like it's working - Rodriquez slides off, much to his dismay, and we're back to standing! Powell displaying calm under pressure there.
Powell lands a jab, followed by a cross and another cross, as Rodriquez backs up against the cage.

James Powell is fighting for a decision - hopefully he's judged it right and he's actually winning the fight.

I would just about give that final round to James Powell.
Well Powell has outworked and out performed his opponent in all aspects of the game today. He was simply too good and the decision should be no more than a formality. Over to the ring announcer for the scorecards.
