RFC 25: Born To Succeed PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a welterweight MMA rules bout between Brett Blackheart and Stanley Lion. Lion comes into a darkened arena with his song building. My Darkest Hour by Scary Kids Scaring Kids kicks in, the lights come on and the crowd goes wild! What a showman! Both fighters look fresh as a daisy as they make their way towards the cage.

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the welterweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 1 wins, 3 losses and 0 draws, fighting out of Hilo, Brett Blackheart!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 1 wins, 1 losses and 0 draws, fighting out of Hilo, Stanley Lion!
The judges for this bout are Ryoma Takatsuka, Josh West and Paul Gruel.

The bell rings for round one and we are underway!

Lion manages to get an easy takedown there - catching Blackheart on his heels. He'll look to pass Blackheart's guard now, I'm sure.
Blackheart is wriggling around but Lion manages to pass to half guard.

Lion wants to control but Blackheart is keeping him busy.
The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing.
Lion is thwarting Blackheart's attempts to control the position.

Lion is sneakily working for an arm triangle but Blackheart sees it coming and defends easily.
Lion is just sitting in half guard, waiting for something to happen.

We've had a slow start to the round here - hopefully the action picks up.
Blackheart tries to roll over but Lion keeps him under control.
Lion is keeping good posture, landing some ground and pound.

Blackheart is looking to stand up but Lion won't let him.

Lion lands a beautiful sweep and he's now moved into his opponent's guard.

Lion drops back for a leg! It's a sloppy attempt though and Lion jumps back into guard quickly, to retain the dominant position.
Blackheart seems to have improved his submission grappling technique since last time we saw him. Let's see if he can pull off a submission.

Lion drops back looking for a heel hook - he quickly realises he's not going to get it but Blackheart manages to dive on top of him before he can escape and now Lion has Blackheart in his guard.

A real slowdown in the pace of the fight for a moment, as Lion holds on and takes a little breather.
We get told so often about how wrestlers don't like to be on their backs. Let's see if Lion can do anything to dispel that myth.

Lion has a loose triangle. He'll be looking to tighten that up but Blackheart can see exactly what he's planning and manages to posture up and free himself.
The crowd thankful this round is nearly over.
Blackheart trying to control the position from guard on top but Lion is wriggling around, looking for whatever he can.

Stanley Lion dominated that round.
The minute break is over - no more time for sponges and pep talks - back to the action!

Blackheart has managed to clinch.
A nice glancing elbow lands by Blackheart.
Lion has Blackheart pressed up against the cage and is working for takedown. Blackheart manages to improve position though and keeps the fight standing.
Blackheart lands a shot to the body.
Blackheart misses with a knee to the head.
Lion lands a shoulder strike.
Blackheart stays in close to his opponent and throws a right hand to the body.

Blackheart manages to break the clinch.
Brett Blackheart seems to be the more aggressive standup fighter in this bout.
Nice sprawl there from Blackheart as Lion shoots in.
Lion looks for a takedown but Blackheart sprawls well.
Brett Blackheart has stuffed three takedown attempts in the round now. That's going to take a lot out of Stanley Lion.
Blackheart throws a head kick that misses and slips in the process. He scrambles back to his feet and the fighters circle.
We've had a slow start to the round here - hopefully the action picks up.

Blackheart gets underhooks to prevent Lion's takedown attempt.
Lion is trying to push Blackheart away but Blackheart has him pressed against the cage, so he's going nowhere.

Blackheart escapes the clinch and we're back to striking.
Lion throws a combination but it was largely blocked by Blackheart.
Blackheart throws a head kick that looked like it stung.
Lion throws a wild combination but nothing lands.
Blackheart fails in his attempt to clinch.
Like a baseball bat into the meat of his leg there - nice leg kick by Blackheart.
Lion on the receiving end of a decent leg kick there by Blackheart. Blackheart obviously looking to wear him down.
Blackheart explodes with a nice body kick and back out of range. Nice work.
Lion throws a looping left and ducks down for a takedown. He's got his arms around Blackheart's waist but Blackheart gets an underhook and avoids the takedown by throwing Lion off to one side.
Lion is breathing heavily.
Blackheart rushes forward with a series of wild hooks but Lion moves out of range and avoids them all easily.
Blackheart displays good takedown defense there as he swats away a double leg from Lion.
Blackheart swung with a counter right hand that didn't connect.
A nice inside leg kick there by Blackheart. That's going to slow Lion down.
Wow, both these guys are really going for it!
Blackheart lands a leg kick. The shin dug right into the meat of the thigh.

Lion shoots in for a takedown and gets it. Let's see what he's got on the mat.

The crowd cheering loudly, showing their appreciation for the quality fight we're seeing here.
Blackheart looking to hit a scissor sweep but Lion is one step ahead there.
Lion with a couple of shots to the head there. Not particularly brutal.

Lion is in a dominant position here, looking for a kimura. Blackheart looks calm but he's in trouble here. Lion gets his leg over his opponent's head and yanks on the arm. Blackheart is tapping like a morse code operator on the titanic! SOS! SOS! Lion lets go of the hold and Blackheart can pop his arm back in it's socket.

Ladies and gentlemen, after 3:29 of round 2, we have a winner by way of Submission (Kimura). Stanley Lion!
In his post fight interview, Stanley Lion started talking himself up. Luckily his charisma kept the crowd on side and gave him a good reception.
