TWGC 14 (170lbs, D4): London Qualifier - Round 1 PBP Commentary


Coming up we have a welterweight Tycoon World Grappling Championship rules bout between Steve McAdams and David Grove. McAdams's entrance music is An Irish Pub. A fine choice. I'm sure you'll be fascinated to know that I was talking to some pointless Z list celebrity before the fight and he thought that David Grove was going to win. Let's see if he was right.

This TWGC bout is 1 fifteen minute round in the welterweight division. Introducing today's competitors. In the red corner, competing out of St Petersburg, with a TWGC record of 0 wins and 0 losses; Steve McAdams! And in the blue corner, fighting out of Hilo, with a TWGC record of 0 wins and 0 losses; David Grove!
The judges for this bout are James Ackerman, Colin Fotheringham and Chris Edwards.


The fighters bow as they face eachother in the middle of the mat and we are under way.

McAdams shoots in and gets a takedown into Grove's guard.

Grove looks really tired already! That doesn't bode well for a good, competitive fight!
McAdams seems content to control from guard here. He's going to have to remain active though if he doesn't want to get stood back up.
McAdams has controlled the position for a good 20 seconds, which will no doubt be starting to frustrate his opponent.

Grove looking for a guillotine here but McAdams defends easily.

McAdams is sneakily working for an arm triangle but Grove sees it coming and defends easily.

McAdams wants to pass the guard but Grove is defending well.
The fighters are starting to get a bit slippery now, which will make submissions a bit more difficult.
McAdams perhaps working for something from half guard, or maybe not. It looks like he's just sitting there.

McAdams wants to work for an arm triangle but Grove is really keeping half guard well and defending the submission attempt.

McAdams is looking for a kimura here.

McAdams is looking to pass the guard... He's managed it - he's now in full mount!

McAdams takes a little breather and maintains the position. The referee will be looking for him to stay active from such a dominant position though.

Grove felt the need to train up his defensive grappling in the buildup to the fight. Presumably he was expecting to be in a difficult position like this, so let's see if he can get out of it.

The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing.
McAdams seems to have a rather negative gameplan on the ground. He seems keen to just score the takedown and hold down Grove for as long as he can get away with.

McAdams's ground tactics aren't going to win him many fans. Let's hope he's got fireworks for us if he gets back to his feet because he's not doing much on the ground.
This is a sustained period of stalling by McAdams.

McAdams has a closed guard, preventing anything of note from happening. Perhaps he's looking to stall.

McAdams bucks up whilst keeping hold of a body lock, managing to reverse the position. Now he's in top in Grove's guard.

Grove is active off his back here, looking for submissions.
McAdams is just sitting in guard, looking to avoid any submissions.
If it seems like I'm not saying a lot, it's just because McAdams is stinking the place up with his stalling.

McAdams continues to hold on tight.

McAdams thinks about going for a leg but decides against it, in order to maintain the position.

McAdams seems content to control from guard here. He's going to have to remain active though if he doesn't want to get stood back up.

Grove is the more experienced fighter here and he's going to need to draw on some of that experience if he's going to pull this one out the bag.

Grove had isolated an arm as going for a kimura. McAdams defends it easily.
McAdams slows down the pace of the fight for a moment. He'll need to remain active if he doesn't want to see the fight stood back up.

Grove wants to sweep but no luck.
McAdams sitting in guard here, content to control.
Boooooooooooooooooooo!!! God, this has been a terrible round. Come on you two, sort yourselves out!

McAdams takes the fight on points by 7 to 2.
