PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a heavyweight MMA rules bout between Elbert Roth (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class) and Andre Jones (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class). I'm sure you'll be fascinated to know that I was talking to some pointless Z list celebrity before the fight and he thought that Andre Jones was going to win. Let's see if he was right.

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the heavyweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 1 - 5 - 0, fighting out of Los Angeles, Elbert Roth!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 0 - 0 - 0, fighting out of Los Angeles, Andre Jones!
The judges for this bout are Timothy Bukovac, Frank Antenori and Don Winkell.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!
Roth shoots in for a takedown. He's persisting with it as Jones sprawls well. Jones wins this battle and keeps the fight standing. Roth gets slowly back to his feet.
Thud! ouch! good body kick from Jones - that will leave a mark!
Roth blocks a head kick by Jones.

Jones looking for a takedown here - he's got it.
We've had a slow start to the round here - hopefully the action picks up.
Jones controls from within his opponent's guard.
Jones throws an elbow that misses. Roth uses the momentum to reverse the position. He's now in Jones's guard. Nice move by Roth!

The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing.

Jones trying to keep a closed guard but Roth is proving a slippery customer.
Roth is standing up over Jones. Jones looks to escape but Roth dives into side control.

My god... these two guys really need to pick up the pace or everyone will leave to go get a beer.
Jones tries to buck Roth off but Roth is having none of it.
Jones is trying to control Roth's posture but Roth avoids it.
Jones is looking for a sweep.

Roth stands up.
Andre Jones seems to be the more aggressive standup fighter in this bout.

Jones drives through with a takedown into Roth's guard. Let's see what he can do from the top position.
Jones chips away with some ground and pound.
Jones slows down the pace of the fight for a moment. He'll need to remain active if he doesn't want to see the fight stood back up.
Jones really doesn't want to stay on the ground with Roth. If he can't get it back to his feet, it's only a matter of time before he'll be tapping out.

Jones postures up and lands a big shot to Roth's brow.

The crowd are showing their displeasure at the lack of action as loud boos ring out around the arena.

The fighters are starting to get a bit slippery now, which will make submissions a bit more difficult.
Jones stands up from Roth's guard - Jones perhaps looking for a knockout.
Jones looks to land a body kick but Roth moved away.
Roth seemed to be looking to counter by closing the distance.

Jones looking to score a takedown here. Roth is defending well but Jones drives through and ends up in Roth's guard.
Roth bucks up whilst keeping hold of a body lock, managing to reverse the position. Now he's in top in Jones's guard.


Roth gets to his feet. Jones looking to butt scoot but the ref puts an end to that. On your feet son!

Jones closes the distance and looks for a trip takedown... aaaand he's got it - Jones lands in his opponent's guard.

Roth has scooted to the edge of the canvas and used the cage to get back to his feet. Jones has stuck on his opponent and is forcing him back against the cage.
The crowd thankful this round is nearly over.

A close round but Andre Jones will probably get the nod.
The fighters' corners scream their final instructions, as the referee calls time. Here we go, back to the action!


Roth defends well against a solid takedown attempt from Jones.

Jones closes the distance, clinches up and gets a nice trip takedown into side control. Very smooth.

Jones goes for an armbar here - this could be all over! But no, Roth has escaped beautifully and is now on top in side control! Oh, that's unlucky for Jones but great work by Roth.
The fighters are pressed up against the cage, both looking to find a bit of space to work.

Roth has had enough of the ground for now and decides to stand.

The fight moves into the clinch position.

Jones manages to break the clinch.

Jones closes the distance and looks for a trip takedown... aaaand he's got it - Jones lands in his opponent's guard.
Fantastic stuff here - a very entertaining period of action, which has drawn cheers from the crowd.

Jones's corner is telling him to maintain position.
Jones distracts Roth with his right hand and drops a big elbow with his other arm.
Jones is taking a break and basically stalling. The referee will not allow him to do that for long.
Jones is looking to pass into half guard but Roth pushes him away with his feet and jumps on top - now Roth is in guard.

Jones is looking to stand back up... there's a bit of a scramble and Roth dives into side control.
A bit of a lull in the action. I'm sure it will pick up again soon... even if the ref has to physically pick them up and put them back on their feet.

That's two minutes gone in the round.
Jones is trying to get back to half guard.
Jones keeps trying to improve his position.

Roth decides to take the fight back to the feet.
Jones tries to shoot in for a takedown. He's got hold of a leg but Roth swivels and escapes.
An attempted straight right counter from Roth misses the target.
Jones closes this distance looking for a takedown but Roth circles away.
Elbert Roth has stuffed three takedown attempts in the round now. That's going to take a lot out of Andre Jones.
Jones is breathing heavily.
Roth stuffs the takedown attempt from Jones. Jones gets slowly back to his feet.

Roth shoots for a takedown but Jones saw that one coming a mile off and avoided it easily.
Jones drops down looking to force a counter takedown but Roth defends it well.
Andre Jones is looking to throw some combinations by the looks of things.
Roth tries for a takedown but Jones sees it coming a mile off and avoids it easily.
Roth shoots in looking for a double leg takedown. Jones defends it nicely.
Jones throws a leg kick which misses Roth's front leg but catches the back leg as Roth tries to avoid it.

There's not a lot going on here and the crowd are letting the fighters know they're not willing to tolerate a lack of action.
Jones thuds a left hand into Roth's body.

Excellent takedown into side control there by Jones.
Jones controls the position.

Jones swings around for an armbar but Roth sees it coming a mile off and turns beautifully into Jones's guard.
Jones seems keen to control Roth's posture.
Roth seems content to control from guard here. He's going to have to remain active though if he doesn't want to get stood back up.
Roth is looking to stand up but Jones won't let him.
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

That was a close second round but I would say that Elbert Roth will probably get the nod.
OK. That's time! The bell goes and we're back to the action. And we move into the final round!



Jones gets to the clinch - let's see what his plan is here.
Roth is working on a leg, looking for a takedown but Jones is defending well.

Jones turns his back and goes for a hip toss. It's a bit messy but it gets the job done and Jones manages to end up in side control.
Roth seems a little lost for a moment, as Jones dominates the positioning.
Jones creates a bit of distance and throws down some hard shots.
We've had a slow start to the round here - hopefully the action picks up.
Roth is sneaking out the side here. He's bucked Jones off and has taken his back!

Roth biding his time, controlling Jones.

Jones is trying to get back to his feet but Roth has full control of the position and if anything, Jones has just worked his way into a worse spot.
Jones tries to escape the position.
Roth gets his hands free as Jones looks to control.

Neither fighter has done anything of merit for a good minute or two here and the crowd are not happy about it.
Jones is trying to avoid being dragged into an even worse position than he's already in but Roth is staying active.
Jones tries to roll but Roth sticks to his back.
Roth controls the position.
Roth seems to have a rather negative gameplan on the ground. He seems keen to just score the takedown and hold down Jones for as long as he can get away with.
Jones looking very determined here, making life difficult for Roth.

Roth struggling to keep hold of the position.
Jones tries to escape but Roth has the hooks in and won't let him break free.
Roth has the hooks sunk in and you can see the will to fight slowly draining out of Jones's body.

Neither fighter has done anything of merit for a good minute or two here and the crowd are not happy about it.
You can see the frustration on Jones's face… He knows he is in trouble unless he improves his position sooner rather than later.
Roth is controlling his opponent, waiting for an opportunity to finish.
Jones is trying to stand back up.
Jones tries to break free.
Boooooooooooooooooooo!!! God, this has been a terrible round. Come on you two, sort yourselves out!
Roth is looking cool and calm here, just waiting for a good opportunity to attack and finish the fight from this dominant position.

And that's the end of the fight!
That was a close round. You could make an argument for either fighter but I would give it to Elbert Roth.
I think Roth has won this one but let's see what the judges have to say. Over to the ring announcer for the scorecards.
