Coming up we have a bantamweight MMA rules bout between Leif Vargas (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class) and Julio Cortes (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class). Leif Vargas has the edge in experience - let's see if he can make that count tonight.

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the bantamweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 2 - 1 - 0, fighting out of Amsterdam, Leif Vargas!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 0 - 0 - 0, fighting out of Amsterdam, Julio Cortes!
The judges for this bout are Paulsen Ambrosius, Paul Aken and Saam Ante.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!
Cortes looks to land a combination but Vargas avoids it well.

Cortes throws the overhand right but ducks down into a quick takedown attempt. Vargas was covering up waiting for the punch and Cortes finishes the takedown easily into guard.

Vargas pushes Cortes off and gets back to his feet.

Cortes moves into the clinch.

Cortes breaks the clinch.

Vargas tries to keep at a distance but Cortes has taken the fight into the clinch.
Vargas fails to pull guard.

Cortes is trying to trip Vargas. He has hold of a leg but Vargas is hopping around, keeping his balance for the moment. Cortes persists though and gets the takedown into guard.

That's one minute gone in the round.
Vargas wants to sweep but no luck.
Cortes trying to pass the guard but can't manage it just yet.
Cortes tries to stand but Vargas is controlling from the bottom.
Cortes trying to control but Vargas is working from the bottom.
Cortes sitting in guard here, content to control.
Cortes wants to control from the top but Vargas keeps moving.

The ref stands the fighters back up due to a lack of activity.

A few boos can be heard. I'm sure they will multiply if the fighters don't pick up the pace.
A jab from Cortes does it's job there.


It looks like Leif Vargas has been cut.
Jab, cross, leg kick. Nice combination by Cortes!

Vargas closes the distance and presses his opponent up against the cage.

Cortes breaks the clinch and we're back to striking at distance.

Cortes closes the distance and scores a nice trip takedown into half guard. Vargas did well to prevent Cortes getting side control.
Cortes is just content to waste time from the top position. Vargas takes advantage of the situation and regains full guard.
Cortes not doing a lot at the moment. He'll have to show some more aggression or the fight will get stood up.
It looks like Cortes might be adopting somewhat of a lay and pray gameplan here, which I'm sure won't go down too well with the paying fans in attendance... Or the ring announcers come to think of it.
The fighters are pressed up against the cage, both looking to find a bit of space to work.

Cortes trying to pass the guard but can't manage it just yet.

We must be close to a standup if these guys don't pick up the pace.
The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing.

Cortes gets to his feet and steps away from his opponent.
Vargas could do with losing a few pounds - he looks very soft around the mid section, to put it politely.

The crowd are starting to boo a lack of action.

Cortes drives through with a really nice takedown into side control.
Vargas taking punishment in the form of punches.

Vargas struggling a bit here.

And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

The corners get their ten second warning. Both fighters stand from their stools and stare eachother down, ready to get back to the action.

Vargas jumps guard but Cortes turns him against the cage and keeps the fight standing.

Cortes bucks up whilst keeping hold of a body lock, managing to reverse the position. Now he's in top in Vargas's guard.

We've had a slow start to the round here - hopefully the action picks up.
Vargas can't do much from the bottom at the moment, as Cortes controls the pace.
Cortes with a couple of shots to the head there. Not particularly brutal.

Cortes controlling from the guard. I say controlling but really, he's stalling.

Vargas is working an open guard so Cortes takes the opportunity to get back to his feet.

Cortes drives through with a takedown into Vargas's guard. Let's see what he can do from the top position.

Cortes controls the pace of the fight for a moment.

Cortes wants to stand up but Vargas has a hold of him and won't allow it.
Vargas wants to control but Cortes is keeping busy and won't allow it.
Cortes takes a deep breath and rests his weight momentarily on top of his opponent, to control the position.

Well. There's a bit of a lull in the action here and the crowd are starting to get restless.
Vargas is looking to improve his position but Cortes isn't that keen on the idea.
Both fighters are absolutely exhausted here.
Cortes pausing momentarily but resumes with a couple of decent strikes that do a bit of damage.
Cortes cracks Vargas with a nasty head shot there - the crowd let out an audible gasp there, as the noise reverberated around the arena.

Julio Cortes showed his class in that round. I'd imagine he'll take it on all the scorecards.

Well, the break between rounds is over. Let's get back to the scrappin! This is the final round!



Vargas gets tackled into the cage by Cortes. Cortes maintains the clinch.
Cortes is looking to score with knees to the body. Maybe he'll change it up and go body then head. Vargas is defending well for now.
Vargas tries to jump guard but he falls flat on his backside. Cortes smiles and moves away.

Vargas utilising some decent striking defenses from the guard, preventing the ground and pound.

Cortes sneaks a leg through and gets to half guard. That was like a knife through butter how easily he passed Vargas's guard.
Cortes trying to control the action but Vargas is working from the bottom.

Cortes looks to score some points with some ground and pound.
Cortes is just sitting in half guard, waiting for something to happen.

My god... these two guys really need to pick up the pace or everyone will leave to go get a beer.

Cortes seems to be working for a kimura but Vargas defends the submission attempt.

Cortes wanted to stand there but Vargas had control of the position.
Cortes is frustrating his opponent with some stalling tactics from top position.

The crowd are showing their displeasure at the lack of action as loud boos ring out around the arena.

The referee has motioned to the fighters to stand back up. He just wasn't happy with the level of activity.

Cortes gets tackled into the cage by Vargas. Vargas maintains the clinch.
Cortes tries a body shot but Vargas blocks it.

Cortes is working from a closed guard but he's struggling to control his opponent.

Cortes has his foot on Vargas's thigh. He's trying to push off and get in position for a triangle, I think. Vargas works his way back into a safe position though.
Leif Vargas has stepped it up - he knows he needs a finish here!
Julio Cortes is fighting for a decision - hopefully he's judged it right and he's actually winning the fight.

Julio Cortes comfortably won the final round on my scorecard.
Well Cortes has outworked and out performed his opponent in all aspects of the game today. He was simply too good and the decision should be no more than a formality. Over to the ring announcer for the scorecards.
