PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a featherweight MMA rules bout between Helios Jones (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class) and Yevgeni Kozlov (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class). Kozlov is bouncing up and down as he enters the arena, backed by For those about to Rock. Yevgeni Kozlov is the more experienced fighter, so let's see if that makes a difference tonight.

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the featherweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 0 - 1 - 0, fighting out of The Island, Helios Jones!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 1 - 2 - 0, fighting out of The Island, Yevgeni Kozlov!
The judges for this bout are Michael Johnstone, David Hoff and Dirk Anderson.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!
Kozlov fails miserably with a takedown attempt.
Jones throws a jab to the body, straight down the pipe. Boom. That sent Kozlov stumbling backwards but he manages to regain his composure quickly.

Kozlov drives through and clinches with Jones against the cage.
Jones lands a shoulder strike that jolts his opponent's head backwards.
Jones manages to get underhooks and slows down the pace for a moment.
Jones working on landing some head shots here - that one got through nicely.
We've had a slow start to the round here - hopefully the action picks up.

Jones breaks the clinch and we're back to striking at distance.
Jones moving in and out of range nicely, whilst landing the scoring shot.
Kozlov shoots and misses
enabling Jones to counter with a crisp jab.


Kozlov is rocked!

That's one minute gone in the round.
Jones misses with an attempted mid kick.
Kozlov now looks to counter with a shot at the body.
Kozlov is still on wobbly legs! Can Jones finish him?
Kozlov goes for a double leg but Jones avoids the attempt and the two fighters end up clinched against the cage as Jones continues to drive forward.
Helios Jones has stuffed three takedown attempts in the round now. That's going to take a lot out of Yevgeni Kozlov.
Jones gets off balance looking for a body kick

and Kozlov counters with a nice double leg into half guard.
Jones on his back here. We all know that wrestlers don't like being on their back so let's see if Jones tries to get out of the position.

Kozlov is working for a kimura but Jones is defending it quite comfortably.
Kozlov seems to have recovered his senses.
Kozlov scoring with strikes to the body and head.
The fighters are pressed up against the cage, both looking to find a bit of space to work.
Kozlov is trying to control the action in half guard but Jones is working away on the bottom, looking perhaps to get back to full guard.
Jones is positioning himself well to prevent Kozlov advancing to mount.
Jones is staying active underneath Kozlov, who seems content to just control the action from this position.

Kozlov trying to pass the guard but Jones defending well.
Kozlov perhaps working for something from half guard, or maybe not. It looks like he's just sitting there.
Kozlov looks towards his corner to check for any instructions. The corner give him nothing to work with, so he cracks Jones with a short hammerfist. I guess that's as good as any advice he could get in this position.
Jones definitely looks more muscular than last time we saw him fight.
Kozlov missing with the ground and pound from half guard.

Kozlov wants to work for an arm triangle but Jones is really keeping half guard well and defending the submission attempt.
Kozlov trying to mount his opponent but Jones defends it.
Kozlov passes the half guard and he's now in mount! Big trouble for Jones!

That's three minutes gone in the round.

Kozlov looking for a guillotine from mount but Jones is having none of it.
Kozlov pausing momentarily but resumes with a couple of decent strikes that do a bit of damage.
Kozlov landing punches.
Kozlov controlling from the full mount.
Jones knows he needs to get back to his feet asap. He's simply no match for Kozlov on the ground.
Kozlov scores with a couple of good head shots there.

That's four minutes gone in the round.
Kozlov content just to control the position here.
The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing.

Kozlov is giving the impression that he's looking to ground and pound but he switches suddenly into a beautiful far side armbar! Jones is forced to tap! Great finish!

Ladies and gentlemen, after 4:36 of round 1, we have a winner by way of Submission (Armbar). Yevgeni Kozlov!
Yevgeni Kozlov spent the whole post fight interview bigging himself up. It didn't go down that well with the fans after a while as they thought it was a bit arrogant.
