PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a welterweight MMA rules bout between Simon Browne (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class) and Paul Poulter (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class). These two fighters really are very evenly matched on the feet - it will be fascinating to see who can assert themselves in that aspect of the fight.

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the welterweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 12 - 15 - 0, fighting out of Montreal, Simon Browne!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 44 - 32 - 2, fighting out of London, Paul Poulter!
The judges for this bout are Gregory Folan, Robert Douchet and Steve Smith.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!

Browne shoots in with a lovely double leg takedown. Poulter manages to land in full guard to minimise the damage.
Browne looking to control the position here, rather than advance.
Browne tries to free his leg and advance position but Poulter is retaining full guard.
Browne passes Poulter's right leg, so he's now in half guard.
Poulter wants to control but Browne is keeping busy.
Still in half guard, Browne seems content to control.
We've had a slow start to the round here - hopefully the action picks up.
Browne is pressing down on Poulter's thigh, looking to free his foot. Poulter is holding on for now.

The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing.
Browne is taking a breather. Poulter says something to him but it's hard to make out. Perhaps he's telling him to get on with it and actually do something.
Browne has controlled the position for a good 20 seconds, which will no doubt be starting to frustrate his opponent.
Browne wants to lay and pray for a moment but Poulter keeps working.
We may be looking at a referee standup if the pace doesn't pick up soon.

That's two minutes gone in the round.
Well. There's a bit of a lull in the action here and the crowd are starting to get restless.
Browne controlling the action here.

The referee decides to stand the fighters back up.

Browne shoots in looking for a single leg takedown. Poulter is trying to defend but Browne finishes it well and ends up in half guard. Let's see if he can advance position further.
Browne is trying to advance to mount but he's lost his balance and Poulter reverses the position - he's now on top in Browne's guard.
Browne controls Poulter momentarily but Poulter frees himself.

Browne scrambles and gets back to his feet.

Browne changes levels and drives through with a really nice takedown into side control. Poulter looks really pissed at himself for not defending that better.

Browne tries to advance to mount but can't.
Poulter parries the strikes from Browne easily there. Browne is wary of posturing up too much because it might enable Poulter to escape.
A lull in the action here.
Browne seems to have a rather negative gameplan on the ground. He seems keen to just score the takedown and hold down Poulter for as long as he can get away with.
Browne trying to control the action but Poulter is working from the bottom.
Browne tries to advance to mount but Poulter denies him.

The crowd are hurling abuse towards the fighters... You can hardly blame them though because there isn't a lot going on in the fight.

Browne decides to take the fight back to the feet.
Horrible takedown attempt by Browne or perhaps it was just good defense by Poulter, which made it look bad.
The crowd thankful this round is nearly over.
Browne fakes high and shoots in for a takedown but Poulter avoids it really well and circles away.
Poulter throws out a counter right but Browne avoids it with no problem.
A decent looking cross lands there for Poulter.
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

The fighters' corners scream their final instructions, as the referee calls time. Here we go, back to the action!


Poulter leaves Browne with his face pressed against the mat as he sprawls beautifully, defending against a solid takedown attempt.

Poulter tries to keep at a distance but Browne has taken the fight into the clinch.
Browne wants a takedown.

Browne has double underhooks and is working for a body lock takedown. He's got it. The fighters land in half guard but Poulter regains guard immediately.
Poulter is looking to stand back up... there's a bit of a scramble and Browne dives into side control.

Browne looking to punish the body of his opponent here but Poulter is avoiding damage well.
We've had a slow start to the round here - hopefully the action picks up.
Browne tries to move into full mount but can't pass Poulter's legs.
Poulter trying to remain calm as Browne controls from the top position.
Browne looking to control but instead Poulter has slipped a leg in, to regain half guard.
Browne with a momentary lay and pray from half guard.
Simon Browne overall seems to be getting the better of the ground position in the fight so far.

Poulter is staying active underneath Browne, who seems content to just control the action from this position.
Browne tries to pass to full mount but Poulter defends it.

Browne is working for submissions here but there's nothing on.
Browne trying to control from half guard but Poulter is working away.
Browne takes a deep breath and rests his weight momentarily on top of his opponent, to control the position.

The crowd are getting on the fighters' backs, as the pace has dropped off in the last minute or so.
This is a sustained period of stalling by Browne.

The referee decides to stand the fighters back up.
Poulter throws a combination but it was largely blocked by Browne.
Poulter looks to land a combination but Browne avoids it well.

Poulter now looks to counter with a shot at the body.

Browne moves into the clinch successfully.
A bit of stalling here from Poulter.
Browne goes for a takedown in the clinch but Poulter prevents it.
Poulter can't break the clinch.
Poulter doesn't land with the attempted body shot.
Poulter content to slow the pace in the clinch.

Poulter escapes the clinch and we're back to striking.
Nice takedown defense from Poulter. No joy for Browne on that attempt.
Browne tries for a takedown but Poulter circles away easily
and Poulter counters with a nice jab to the body that keeps Browne thinking.
No luck with that takedown attempt from Browne.
Browne looks shocked there as he takes a right hand to the temple.
Browne shoots in for a double leg but Poulter sprawls well. That's going to sap some energy.

That's four minutes gone in the round.
Poulter feints and then cracks Browne's leading leg with a nice low kick. He's obviously looking to slow Browne down.
Poulter throws a combination but comes up with nothing but fresh air.
Poulter pivots, looking for a leg kick but Browne is out of range and Poulter settles back down.
Browne closes this distance looking for a takedown but Poulter circles away.
Simon Browne seems to be the more aggressive standup fighter in this bout.
Both fighters are absolutely exhausted here.

Browne gets a takedown into half guard.
The fans in attendance giving it up for the two fighters, who have really let it all hang out in the last minute or so!

Paul Poulter showed his class in that round. I'd imagine he'll take it on all the scorecards.
The referee calls time. The cornermen exit stage left and we're back to business. This is the final round!


Browne tries to close the distance and clinch but Poulter swats him to one side with an open hand palm strike and circles away.
Poulter scores with a nice head shot.
Poulter defends well against a solid takedown attempt from Browne.
Browne misses with a takedown attempt. He shot from a bit too far out.
Browne shoots in looking for a double leg takedown. Poulter defends it nicely.
That's three failed takedown attempts in the round for Simon Browne. That's going to take a lot out of him.
Poulter avoids the clinch attempt nicely.
Browne moves forwards but Poulter connects with a nice, crisp jab.
Poulter's corner calls for a 1, 2 combination and Poulter duly obliges.


Browne is rocked!
Poulter fires a straight punch through the middle that cracks Browne square on the jaw! Damn, Browne is out cold on his feet and topples face first to the canvas! Wow, I haven't seen a knockout that brutal in a long time!
