PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a featherweight MMA rules bout between Dan Sergeant (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class) and Daniel Murphy (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class). Murphy has chosen Battering Ram - 'Come Out and Fight' Irish Folk as his entrance music. Daniel Murphy told me before the fight that he's been watching a lot of DVDs so let's see if that helps him in this one! I can't wait to find out!

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the featherweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 6 - 4 - 0, fighting out of Rio de Janeiro, Dan Sergeant!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 3 - 2 - 0, fighting out of Rio de Janeiro, Daniel Murphy!
The judges for this bout are Seu Braga, Leandro Rodrigues and Matheus Silva.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!
Murphy closes this distance looking for a takedown but Sergeant circles away.

Sergeant gets a double leg takedown into Murphy's guard.

Murphy has managed to wall walk up one of the corner posts to get back to his feet. Sergeant is pushing him up against the cage, looking to control the position.
Sergeant is working for takedown but Murphy is calmly controlling the position for now.
Sergeant wants to take the fight to the mat but Murphy manages to get underhooks and keep the fight in the clinch.

That's three failed takedown attempts in the round for Dan Sergeant. That's going to take a lot out of him.
Sergeant has a body lock and is looking for a takedown. Murphy is bouncing around trying to prevent the takedown and somehow he has indeed managed to stay on his feet.

The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing.
Murphy is pushing Sergeant's head away, looking to escape. Sergeant manages to hold on to the position though.
Sergeant in side control lands a decent elbow.
Sergeant lands a knee to the body and follows it up with some ground and pound to the head. That will wear Murphy down.
Sergeant creates a bit of distance and throws down some hard shots.
Sergeant misses with a strike but at least he's keeping busy, looking to cause some damage - that will still help him when it comes to the judges scorecards.
Murphy tries to slip a leg under to move to half guard but Sergeant presses down on the leg and jumps into full mount!

Sergeant avoids the attempt from Murphy to control.

Sergeant has been looking to land a fair amount of strikes on the ground. He might be looking to soften his opponent up in order to work for a submission.
Sergeant fakes a shot to the body and cracks his opponent in the head. Nice ground and pound there!
Murphy really doesn't want to stay on the ground with Sergeant. If he can't get it back to his feet, it's only a matter of time before he'll be tapping out.
The crowd growing excited in anticipation of a finish here! Right on cue, Sergeant cracks his opponent with a massive right hand that draws loud cheers!

Murphy tries to lock up and control but Sergeant gives him a forearm to the face and pushes him away.
Sergeant has his opponent pinned against the cage, landing some nasty ground and pound that is really making a bit of a mess out of Murphy's face.

Sergeant is still in mount, landing shots to his trapped opponent. Murphy can't stay in a position like this for much longer.

Murphy takes a big shot to the head but keeps on trying to improve his position.

Sergeant is landing with some decent strikes but Murphy is trying to advance his position so the referee is letting the fight continue.

Murphy shoots in for a takedown but doesn't get it.
Murphy stuffs a takedown. It's all about dictating where the fight takes place and Murphy wants it to stay on the feet.
Murphy motions for Sergeant to come forward. Murphy throws a leg kick but it misses it's target.
It really doesn't seem like the step up in weight is hurting Sergeant here at all. He's more than holding his own against the bigger man.
Murphy goes for a double leg but Sergeant avoids the attempt and the two fighters end up clinched against the cage as Sergeant continues to drive forward.

Murphy has hold of Sergeant's hands but Sergeant slips his arm to the side and lands an elbow.

Dan Sergeant overall seems to be getting the better of the ground position in the fight so far.

Sergeant postures up and cracks his opponent a couple of times before moving back into close ground control. Murphy looks a forlorn figure.

The crowd cheering loudly, showing their appreciation for the quality fight we're seeing here.

The corners get their ten second warning. Both fighters stand from their stools and stare eachother down, ready to get back to the action. This is the final round!


Sergeant smiles there as he lands a nice right hand right on the button.
Sergeant ducks down and throws a hook to the body but Murphy moves away.
Murphy is looking to clinch.

Murphy tries to sprawl but Sergeant drives through with a takedown into half guard.

Well. There's a bit of a lull in the action here and the crowd are starting to get restless.

Murphy bucks up and manages to get a nice reversal! He's in guard on the top - nicely done!

Murphy has his foot on Sergeant's thigh. He's trying to push off and get in position for a triangle, I think. Sergeant works his way back into a safe position though.
Boooooooooooooooooooo!!! God, this has been a terrible round. Come on you two, sort yourselves out!
Murphy has momentary wrist control but Sergeant slips an elbow through the middle.

Daniel Murphy has stepped it up - he knows he needs a finish here!
Dan Sergeant is fighting for a decision here - he's started to take the cautious approach.
Murphy wants to get back to his feet.

Well I reckon that's a shut out for Sergeant, winning every round. Will the judges agree? They are the ones who matter, even if they are often depressingly incompetent. Over to the ring announcer for the scorecards.
