PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a heavyweight MMA rules bout between Elvin Barrett (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class) and Rocky Maivia (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class). We have two fighters making their debuts here, so let's see who comes out of this one with their first professional victory.

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the heavyweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 0 - 0 - 0, fighting out of St Petersburg, Elvin Barrett!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 0 - 0 - 0, fighting out of St Petersburg, Rocky Maivia!
The judges for this bout are Illya Tyunina, Vladimir Khabensky and Aleksandr Martynov.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!

Barrett clinches with his opponent.
Maivia is defending well against a takedown attempt.

Maivia jumps guard and drags Barrett to the mat. He's obviously going to be looking for submissions off his back.
Maivia wants to sweep here but Barrett controlling him for the moment.
Barrett throwing strikes but missing.
Maivia has a closed guard, preventing anything of note from happening. Perhaps he's looking to stall.
We've had a slow start to the round here - hopefully the action picks up.
Barrett is in close to Maivia's body, working some short punches and elbows.

Barrett is fighting to break Maivia's control of his arms but Maivia is doing a good job of controlling the position at the moment.

Maivia lands a beautiful sweep and he's now moved into his opponent's guard.

Maivia pushes down on Barrett's leg and manages to get into half guard.
The two fighters exchange a few words. I couldn't hear what they were saying but maybe it's more fun if you make it up yourself. Maivia connects with a nice short shot to Barrett's temple.

Maivia is figuring out what he wants to do next.

Barrett has been looking to land a fair amount of strikes on the ground. He might be looking to soften his opponent up in order to work for a submission.

Maivia working some ground and pound from close in. He's looking to maintain this position and strike for a while by the looks of things... although he'll probably advance to full mount in a minute now I've said that.
Maivia wants to free his trapped foot but Barrett is holding on for dear life with his legs.

Maivia seems to be taking a bit of a break to think of his next move. He lands a short punch in the meantime.
Maivia takes advantage of the dominant position to land a couple of big hammer fists.

The two fighters exchange a few words. I couldn't hear what they were saying but maybe it's more fun if you make it up yourself. Maivia connects with a nice short shot to Barrett's temple.
Barrett wants to get back to his feet.
Maivia takes a deep breath and rests his weight momentarily on top of his opponent, to control the position.
Barrett won't allow Maivia to pass to mount.
Boooooooooooooooooooo!!! God, this has been a terrible round. Come on you two, sort yourselves out!
Maivia drops an elbow to the side of Barrett's head.
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

Rocky Maivia dominated that round.
That's the end of the round. The referee orders the cornermen out of the cage so we can get back down to business.


Barrett avoids a lazy jab quite easily.
Elvin Barrett is looking to throw some combinations by the looks of things.
Maivia tries to clinch but Barrett moves out of range.

Barrett gets caught flat footed, as Maivia shoots in with a quick takedown into guard.
Maivia throws a strike but Barrett rolls with it and manages to sweep. Now he's in guard on top.

Maivia is working an open guard here, looking to improve his position. No doubt that will leave him open to counters but at least he's being more offensive.

Barrett could do with losing a few pounds - he looks very soft around the mid section, to put it politely.

The fighters are pressed up against the cage, both looking to find a bit of space to work.
Maivia wants to stand and escape but Barrett is having none of it.
There's a bit of a scramble here and now Maivia is on top in guard.

Maivia is frustrating his opponent with some stalling tactics from top position.
Maivia won't allow Barrett to get back to his feet.
Maivia is intent on slowing down the pace of the fight, simply looking to control.

The crowd are showing their displeasure at the lack of action as loud boos ring out around the arena.
Maivia must be cautious of submissions here, given that his opponent has the superior Jiu Jitsu.
The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing.

Neither fighter has done anything of merit for a good minute or two here and the crowd are not happy about it.

The ref stands the fighters back up due to a lack of activity.
Maivia misses with a half-hearted attempt at a head kick.
Boooooooooooooooooooo!!! God, this has been a terrible round. Come on you two, sort yourselves out!

Maivia drops down and drives through with a powerful takedown into guard.
Maivia content to stall in guard here.
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

Rocky Maivia showed his class in that round. I'd imagine he'll take it on all the scorecards.
That's the end of the round. The referee orders the cornermen out of the cage so we can get back down to business. This is the final round!

Both fighters are breathing heavily.
The referee walks around the fighters to get a better view of the action. Maivia lands a nice short elbow.
Maivia takes a deep breath and rests his weight momentarily on top of his opponent, to control the position.

Let's hope that Maivia has the urge to step up the pace any second now because for the last 15 or 20 seconds he's just been holding on tight.
More stalling from Maivia.
Barrett has hold of Maivia's hands but Maivia slips his arm to the side and lands an elbow.
Maivia is just sitting in half guard, waiting for something to happen.

The crowd are hurling abuse towards the fighters... You can hardly blame them though because there isn't a lot going on in the fight.

The referee has stepped in and called for a break in the action. We'll restart on the feet.
Maivia misses with a hook.
Maivia pulls out of a head kick attempt.
Maivia tries a head kick but it misses.
Boooooooooooooooooooo!!! God, this has been a terrible round. Come on you two, sort yourselves out!

Maivia clinches up with Barrett and pushes him back against the cage.
Elvin Barrett has stepped it up - he knows he needs a finish here!
Rocky Maivia is fighting for a decision - hopefully he's judged it right and he's actually winning the fight.
Barrett has dropped down and is looking to force the takedown but it's defended by Maivia after a bit of a struggle.

And that's the end of the fight!
Rocky Maivia comfortably won the final round on my scorecard.
Well Maivia has outworked and out performed his opponent in all aspects of the game today. He was simply too good and the decision should be no more than a formality. Over to the ring announcer for the scorecards.
