PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a heavyweight MMA rules bout between Columbus Wells (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class) and Lek Mak (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class). I can't wait for this one - let's get the fighter introductions out of the way and get this one started!

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the heavyweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 0 - 1 - 0, fighting out of Helsinki, Columbus Wells!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 0 - 0 - 0, fighting out of Helsinki, Lek Mak!
The judges for this bout are Ben Zyskovitsi, Roosa Järviläinen and Johanna Lukiainen.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!

Mak throws the overhand right but ducks down into a quick takedown attempt. Wells was covering up waiting for the punch and Mak finishes the takedown easily into guard.
Wells is looking to stand back up... there's a bit of a scramble and Mak dives into side control.

Wells tries to work a leg under to get back to half guard but Mak wriggles his own leg back out and remains in side control.

Mak decides to take the fight back to the feet.

Mak has Wells up against the cage in a clinch.
We've had a slow start to the round here - hopefully the action picks up.

Mak gets control of Wells's arms and successfully pulls guard. Mak will no doubt be looking for submissions off his back.
Mak looking to control the pace of the fight rather than finish it.

That's one minute gone in the round.
Mak trying to strike off his back.
Wells prevents Mak from getting back to his feet.
Wells could do with losing a few pounds - he looks very soft around the mid section, to put it politely.
Wells showing good wrestling skills to control the position.
Mak looking to hit a scissor sweep but Wells is one step ahead there.
Wells trying to control the position from guard on top but Mak is wriggling around, looking for whatever he can.

That's two minutes gone in the round.
My god... these two guys really need to pick up the pace or everyone will leave to go get a beer.
Mak being controlled here, momentarily.
Mak is working an open guard here, looking to improve his position. No doubt that will leave him open to counters but at least he's being more offensive.

The referee has decided to stand the fighters back up, so we'll restart on the feet.

Mak rushes Wells and presses him up against the cage.
Wells just leaning against Mak, taking a breather.

Mak is working on a single leg takedown against the cage. Wells can't fight it off and eventually Mak manages to take the fight to the floor. Wells looks annoyed but at least he's managed to land in guard.

Wells wants to control here, rather than go for any submissions from the bottom. At least for now.
Wells keeping moving, preventing Mak from controlling successfully.
Wells wants to stand and escape but Mak is having none of it.
Wells is trying to keep Mak in close.
Mak trying to control but Wells is working from the bottom.

That's four minutes gone in the round.
Well. There's a bit of a lull in the action here and the crowd are starting to get restless.
Wells looking to control the pace of the fight rather than finish it.

The ref stands the fighters back up due to a lack of activity.

Mak gets in close and instigates a clinch.
Wells doesn't land with the attempted body shot.

Mak breaks the clinch.
Wells fails with an attempt to clinch.
Boooooooooooooooooooo!!! God, this has been a terrible round. Come on you two, sort yourselves out!

Mak has closed the distance and engaged Wells in a clinch.
Wells tries to work over Mak's body with a swooping hook but it only glances the target.

Mak gets a nice trip takedown into half guard.
Wells is looking to get back to is feet but Mak passes into side control.
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

Lek Mak dominated that round.
That's the end of the round. The referee orders the cornermen out of the cage so we can get back down to business.


Wells shoots in for a takedown - he's clinched up with Mak but Mak pushes him off and we're back to square one.
Mak steps in looking to counter with the mid kick but it doesn't connect.

Mak looking to score a takedown here. Wells is defending well but Mak drives through and ends up in Wells's guard.
Mak trying to control the position from guard on top but Wells is wriggling around, looking for whatever he can.

Wells is working an open guard so Mak takes the opportunity to get back to his feet.
Wells wants to clinch.

Mak shoots in for a takedown and gets it.

Mak is nestled in close to Wells, controlling him well. He's worked in a nice elbow to the side of the head as well, for good measure.
Mak is trying to control. Wells wants to improve his position but can't escape this time.

Mak thumps the canvas. Not on purpose obviously - he just missed Wells's head.
Wells tries to kick Mak off but Mak keeps his base steady and stays in half guard.

Mak thows a huge punch but Wells dodges it nicely.

There's not a lot going on here and the crowd are letting the fighters know they're not willing to tolerate a lack of action.
Mak controlling the pace.
Mak throwing shots but they're hitting the canvas more than the man.
Wells tries to get to full guard but Mak has control of the leg.
Mak has been the more effective fighter overall so far.
Wells is trying to stand up here but Mak is controlling him well.

The referee has decided to stand the fighters back up, so we'll restart on the feet.
Wells fails in his attempt to clinch.

Mak instigates a clinch.
Wells tries to pull guard but can't drag his opponent to the mat. Mak just stands there and leans against the cage.
Wells is trying to break the clinch but Mak is controlling him.

Mak scores with a knee to the head.


It looks like Columbus Wells has been cut.
Wells trying to land knees to the body.

Wells manages to pull guard.
Mak is stalling in the full guard.
Mak is pushing down on Wells's leg trying to pass to half guard. Wells is fighting to maintain full guard but Mak has managed to sneak the leg through.

Mak decides to stand up.

Mak looking to shoot here. He's gone for it and he's landed a takedown into side control! Oh, that's bad for Wells!
Mak slows the pace down.
The fighters are pressed up against the cage, both looking to find a bit of space to work.

That's four minutes gone in the round.
Mak tries to cartwheel into mount but he doesn't manage it.
Wells gets one leg under and gets the fight to half guard.
Mak looks over to his corner - he wants some instructions but his corner are not responding.
Wells wants to control but Mak is keeping busy.
The crowd thankful this round is nearly over.
Mak controlling the action here.
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

Lek Mak showed his class in that round. I'd imagine he'll take it on all the scorecards.
The cut man is working on Columbus Wells's cut.
That's time! Wells's corner gives him a slap on the ass as he gets ready to fight. This is the final round!

Mak throws out a powerful jab.

Mak feints and then dives in with a takedown. That was a long way out but the feint bought him enough time to close the distance and complete the takedown. Now we'll play guard for a bit and see who can get the better of that position.
Wells is trying to control the position from the bottom.
Mak trying to land body shots but he keeps hitting the mat.

Mak stands up from guard. Let's bang!

Mak fakes a strike and closes the distance, dragging Wells to the ground. Mak is now in Wells's guard.
Wells looking to hit a scissor sweep but Mak is one step ahead there.
Mak controls the pace of the fight for a moment.
Wells bucks up whilst keeping hold of a body lock, managing to reverse the position. Now he's in top in Mak's guard.

The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing.
Mak is trying to control the position but Wells postures up.
Mak can't do much from the bottom at the moment, as Wells controls the pace.

That's two minutes gone in the round.
Wells won't allow Mak to get back to his feet.
Wells seems content to control from guard here. He's going to have to remain active though if he doesn't want to get stood back up.
Mak throwing some rather feeble looking strikes off his back.
Mak not looking particularly offensive just at the moment.

The referee has decided to stand the fighters back up, so we'll restart on the feet.

Wells closes the distance and clinches.

That's three minutes gone in the round.

Mak is trying to trip Wells. He has hold of a leg but Wells is hopping around, keeping his balance for the moment. Mak persists though and gets the takedown into guard.
Mak wants to control from the top but Wells keeps moving.
Wells looking for a sweep. Not yet Wells, not yet.
Wells pulls Mak in close to prevent any damage.
Mak throws a big elbow that misses.
Wells bucks up whilst keeping hold of a body lock, managing to reverse the position. Now he's in top in Mak's guard.

Mak has his hands on Wells's head, controlling the position.

Mak looking for a guillotine here but Wells defends easily.
Mak takes a big intake of breath there - he's definitely tired.

That's four minutes gone in the round.
Wells wants to control from the top but Mak keeps moving.
Mak throws a couple of shots from the bottom but they don't land.
Columbus Wells has stepped it up - he knows he needs a finish here!
Lek Mak is fighting for a decision - hopefully he's judged it right and he's actually winning the fight.
Boooooooooooooooooooo!!! God, this has been a terrible round. Come on you two, sort yourselves out!
Mak has momentary wrist control but Wells slips an elbow through the middle.

And that's the end of the fight!
Lek Mak comfortably won the final round on my scorecard.
Well Mak has outworked and out performed his opponent in all aspects of the game today. He was simply too good and the decision should be no more than a formality. Over to the ring announcer for the scorecards.
