PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a lightweight MMA rules bout between Joe Ryzon (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class) and Edward Hands (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class). Edward Hands will no doubt be trying to keep this one on the feet, where he has a distinct advantage.

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the lightweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 2 - 1 - 0, fighting out of Rio de Janeiro, Joe Ryzon!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 0 - 0 - 0, fighting out of Helsinki, Edward Hands!
The judges for this bout are Ben Zyskovitsi, Johanna Lukiainen and Anni Minnemäki.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!

Hands drops down and drives through with a powerful takedown into guard.
Ryzon looks exhausted already! Oh dear, he should have come in in better shape than this!
Ryzon is looking to get back to his feet but can't, whilst Hands is controlling him.
Ryzon might be looking to lock onto one of his opponent's long limbs for a submission, whilst we're on the ground.
Hands content to stall in guard here.
Ryzon is working an open guard here, looking to improve his position. No doubt that will leave him open to counters but at least he's being more offensive.
Hands trying to pass the guard but can't manage it just yet.
Ryzon seems to have improved his submission grappling technique since last time we saw him. Let's see if he can pull off a submission.
We've had a slow start to the round here - hopefully the action picks up.

Hands might have to switch it up a bit here because his efforts to control Ryzon haven't been going to plan, at least at the current moment in time.

The ref stands the fighters back up due to a lack of activity.
Ryzon tries to clinch but Hands is having none of it.

Hands throws a combination but comes up with nothing but fresh air.
Ryzon tries to drive through with a takedown attempt but Hands defends well and Ryzon ends up having to push Hands into the cage where they will battle it out in the clinch.

Ryzon shoots in from a long way out. He's driving through with the takedown attempt and he eventually gets it, landing in Hands's guard.
Hands wants to stand and escape but Ryzon is having none of it.

Hands wants to sweep but no luck.
Ryzon wants to pass the guard but Hands is keeping the position.
Hands is doing well to control the posture of his opponent and prevent any damage.

Ryzon stands up from Hands's guard - Ryzon perhaps looking for a knockout.
Hands feints a jab promting Ryzon to slip. Hands then demonstrates his capabilities by jabbing again. Ryzon slips again and ducks right into an uppercut.

Hands closes the distance and after a bit of a stuggle, scores a takedown into Ryzon's guard.
Hands slows down the pace of the fight for a moment. He'll need to remain active if he doesn't want to see the fight stood back up.
Ryzon seems keen to control rather than go for a submission, at least for now.
Hands trying to control the position from guard on top but Ryzon is wriggling around, looking for whatever he can.

Ryzon wants to sweep but no luck.

The referee has motioned to the fighters to stand back up. He just wasn't happy with the level of activity.

Hands looks for a takedown. He's got it. We're now in half guard.
Hands seems content to maintain position for now, rather than mounting any offense.
Boooooooooooooooooooo!!! God, this has been a terrible round. Come on you two, sort yourselves out!
Hands is keeping good posture, landing some ground and pound.
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

Hands tries a switch kick but it misses it's target.

Hands pulls out of a head kick attempt.

and Hands counters with a good right hand that lands right on the jaw.

Ryzon appears to be looking for a big counter.

Ryzon has his foot on Hands's thigh. He's trying to push off and get in position for a triangle, I think. Hands works his way back into a safe position though.

The fighters are pressed up against the cage, both looking to find a bit of space to work.

The ref stands the fighters back up due to a lack of activity.
Hands tries to land with a swinging hook to the body but Ryzon was well out of range. Poor timing from Hands.
Hands throws a combination but comes up with nothing but fresh air.

Well. There's a bit of a lull in the action here and the crowd are starting to get restless.

Hands shoots in for a takedown from distance. He catches Ryzon napping and manages to drive through into side control!
Ryzon manages to get back to half guard.
Ryzon is trying to get back to full guard.

Hands is working for submissions here but there's nothing on.

Hands postures up and decides to stand up, from the half guard. The ref calls for Ryzon to stand up.

The crowd are showing their displeasure at the lack of action as loud boos ring out around the arena.
Hands thows a body kick. Ryzon tries to catch it but that hurt him.
Horrible takedown attempt by Ryzon or perhaps it was just good defense by Hands, which made it look bad.
Hands throws a counter combo.
Hands jabs Ryzon to the body, keeping him at a distance.
Hands fakes and then throws a beautiful body shot. Ryzon looks a bit winded and takes a step backwards to take a breath.
No luck for Hands with that takedown attempt.
Boooooooooooooooooooo!!! God, this has been a terrible round. Come on you two, sort yourselves out!
Hands bobs and weaves and then throws a good body kick.
Ryzon shoots and misses
and Hands counters with a head kick. That will keep Ryzon thinking before he tries any more sloppy attacks!
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

Edward Hands showed his class in that round. I'd imagine he'll take it on all the scorecards.
The minute break is over - no more time for sponges and pep talks - back to the action! This is the final round!


Hands dives in for a single leg takedown but Ryzon sprawls and the fighters end up clinched against the cage.
Ryzon quickly followed up with a counter body kick but doesn't connect.
Ryzon stuffs the takedown.
Hands ducks down and throws a hook to the body but Ryzon moves away.

Ryzon rushes Hands and pushes him back against the cage in a clinch.

Ryzon's corner calls for him to break the clinch, which he does.
Ryzon gets cracked with a nice right hand there by Hands.
Hands avoids a lazy jab quite easily.
Hands fails to land with a series of punches.
We've had a slow start to the round here - hopefully the action picks up.
Hands shoots in for a takedown. "Ole!" shouts Ryzon as he jumps to the side.
Joe Ryzon has stuffed three takedown attempts in the round now. That's going to take a lot out of Edward Hands.

Ryzon shoots in with a lovely double leg takedown. Hands manages to land in full guard to minimise the damage.
Both fighters are breathing heavily.

Ryzon won't allow Hands to get back to his feet.
Ryzon slows down the pace of the fight, as he sits in guard.
Ryzon wants to control from the top but Hands keeps moving.

Hands fakes high and shoots in for a takedown but Ryzon avoids it really well and circles away.
It looked like Ryzon was looking amped, ready to throw a big counter but didn't commit.

Hands shoots in with a takedown attempt and he has Ryzon pinned against the cage. Ryzon gets the underhooks and manages to circle away.

The two fighters are working to gain dominance in the clinch.

Hands breaks the clinch and we return to the middle of the mat.
Hands shoots for a double leg takedown but Ryzon sprawls well. He's pushed Hands's face into the mat and manages to get back to his feet relatively easily.
Ryzon is trying to close the distance and clinch up, after that failed offence from Hands.

Ryzon gets the takedown into side control.

Ryzon decides to take the fight back to the feet.
Hands is throwing a lot of body shots here, looking to wear down Ryzon rather than just go for the knockout.
Ryzon shoots in for a takedown - he's clinched up with Hands but Hands pushes him off and we're back to square one.
Hands is loading up here, looking for a big counter of his own.

Edward Hands is fighting for a decision - hopefully he's judged it right and he's actually winning the fight.

Ryzon gets taken down but at least he's managed to land in guard.
