PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a heavyweight MMA rules bout between Daniel Gilbert (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class) and Ahmed Carter (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class). We have two fighters making their debuts here, so let's see who comes out of this one with their first professional victory.

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the heavyweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 0 - 0 - 0, fighting out of Montreal, Daniel Gilbert!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 0 - 0 - 0, fighting out of Montreal, Ahmed Carter!
The judges for this bout are William Peck, Steve Smith and Alec Ball.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!
Gilbert throws a sloppy head kick and Carter moves out of range easily.
Carter avoids the head kick by Gilbert.
Gilbert could do with losing a few pounds - he looks very soft around the mid section, to put it politely.
Gilbert stuffs a takedown. It's all about dictating where the fight takes place and Gilbert wants it to stay on the feet.
Gilbert changes levels looking for a counter takedown but doesn't commit.
Carter tries for a takedown but Gilbert circles away easily
and Gilbert counters with a flying knee. Nice.
Nice sprawl there from Carter as Gilbert shoots in.
Gilbert lands with a slapping head kick.

Gilbert gets tackled into the cage by Carter. Carter maintains the clinch.
Carter wants to take the fight to the mat but Gilbert manages to get underhooks and keep the fight in the clinch.
Daniel Gilbert has stuffed three takedown attempts in the round now. That's going to take a lot out of Ahmed Carter.
We've had a slow start to the round here - hopefully the action picks up.
Carter has had enough of the clinch and is looking to separate.

Carter breaks the clinch and we're back to striking at distance.
Gilbert shoots in looking for a takedown. Carter tries to sprawl out of it but Gilbert keeps driving through. The fighters are pinned against the cage. Carter manages to get underhooks and after a bit of a struggle, circles away and we're back to standing.

Carter really doesn't want to stay on the ground with Gilbert. If he can't get it back to his feet, it's only a matter of time before he'll be tapping out.

Carter is frustrating his opponent with some stalling tactics from top position.
Carter connects with a couple of short punches.

Gilbert escapes his hips to the side and looks to be working for an armbar. Carter gives him a little smile and shakes his head. No chance.

Carter is just sitting in guard, looking to avoid any submissions.
Carter working in close now, lands a nice elbow to the side of Gilbert's head.


It looks like Daniel Gilbert has been cut.
Carter controlling from the guard. I say controlling but really, he's stalling.
The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing.
Gilbert bucks up whilst keeping hold of a body lock, managing to reverse the position. Now he's in top in Carter's guard.

Carter throws a couple of weedy looking strikes off his back.

Carter working for submissions but it's allowed Gilbert to get to half guard.
Carter is looking to control Gilbert's leg but it's slowly edging free. Can Carter avoid being mounted?
Carter is positioning himself well to prevent Gilbert advancing to mount.
Carter is looking to regain full guard. Not this time though.
Nice strikes from Gilbert there.

My god... these two guys really need to pick up the pace or everyone will leave to go get a beer.
Gilbert sitting in half guard, looking to land shots. Carter defending well though.
Carter is trying to get back to full guard.
Carter is persisting with the attempt to improve his position.
Gilbert seems very keen to just sit and control from half guard but Carter does not like that idea so much and is remaining active off his back.
Boooooooooooooooooooo!!! God, this has been a terrible round. Come on you two, sort yourselves out!

The referee claps his hands together and tells the fighters to work.
Carter is looking to improve his position.

The referee has decided to stand the fighters back up, so we'll restart on the feet.
Gilbert throws a head kick that misses and slips in the process. He scrambles back to his feet and the fighters circle.
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

That's the end of the interval. I'm sure that seemed a lot quicker than a minute for our two fighters! Back to the action.


Gilbert fails miserably with a takedown attempt.

Gilbert gets taken down but at least he's managed to land in guard.
Carter prevents Gilbert from getting back to his feet.
Gilbert bucks up whilst keeping hold of a body lock, managing to reverse the position. Now he's in top in Carter's guard.

Gilbert lands a couple of digs.
We've had a slow start to the round here - hopefully the action picks up.
Carter looking for a sweep. Not yet Carter, not yet.

Carter has his foot on Gilbert's thigh. He's trying to push off and get in position for a triangle, I think. Gilbert works his way back into a safe position though.

Gilbert trying to control the position from guard on top but Carter is wriggling around, looking for whatever he can.

The fighters are pressed up against the cage, both looking to find a bit of space to work.

Gilbert decides he's had enough of playing guard and decides to stand. Come on Carter, up you get!

Carter decides to change it up a bit and drives through with a nice takedown into half guard.

Gilbert misses with some strikes from the bottom.
The fighters are battling for position here. Gilbert manages to regain full guard. Nice work.
Carter controls from within his opponent's guard.

Gilbert pushes Carter off and scrambles back to his feet.
Carter looks to land a body kick but Gilbert moved away.
Gilbert tries to counter with a takedown but Carter is quick to defend against it.
Carter throws a leg kick but Gilbert sees it coming and moves out of range.
Gilbert darts in looking for a takedown but Carter gets double underhooks and turns Gilbert into the cage.
Gilbert shoots in and drives through. Carter sprawls well.
Carter tries a quick counter leg kick but Gilbert is wise to it.
That's three failed takedown attempts in the round for Daniel Gilbert. That's going to take a lot out of him.

Gilbert gets tackled into the cage by Carter. Carter maintains the clinch.

Carter jumps guard.
Carter is trying to keep Gilbert in close.
Gilbert has been looking to land a fair amount of strikes on the ground. He might be looking to soften his opponent up in order to work for a submission.
Carter wants to control but instead he gets his guard passed and Gilbert is now in half guard.

Carter manages to create a bit of space in order to work his way back to his feet. Gilbert keeps hold of his opponent and drives him back against the cage.
Gilbert prevents a takedown attempt there.
Carter tries to break the clinch but Gilbert is controlling the position.

Gilbert jumps guard but Carter stands there with Gilbert around his waist. Gilbert gives up and drops back to his feet. We remain in the clinch.

A bit of stalling here from Carter.
Carter looks like he'd prefer to be striking at range right now.

The crowd thankful this round is nearly over.
Gilbert wants to control from the top but Carter keeps moving.
Carter is pulling down on Gilbert's head. It's preventing any offense from Gilbert, at least for the moment.
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

Ahmed Carter showed his class in that round. I'd imagine he'll take it on all the scorecards.

The fighters' corners scream their final instructions, as the referee calls time. Here we go, back to the action! Let's hear some noise people - this is the final round!



Carter closes the distance and presses his opponent up against the cage.

Ahmed Carter has got the better of the ground game so far.
Gilbert has a butterfly guard looking to sweep but Carter has passed into side control.
Gilbert sneaks a leg under to get back to half guard.
Gilbert wants to get back to his feet.
Gilbert is trying to get back to full guard.
Carter is scoring with some nice ground and pound from the dominant position.

Carter is looking for a kimura. It's going to be difficult to finish that from half guard though and Gilbert defends it well.

Gilbert manages to create a bit of space in order to work his way back to his feet. Carter keeps hold of his opponent and drives him back against the cage.

Carter stalling the fight.
Gilbert is pressed up against the cage. Carter has hold of a leg and is looking to drag Gilbert down to the mat. Gilbert avoids the attempt though and has circled away. We're back to striking at a distance.
Carter looks frustrated there after his takedown attempt is stuffed easily.
Daniel Gilbert has stuffed three takedown attempts in the round now. That's going to take a lot out of Ahmed Carter.

Carter has closed the distance and engaged Gilbert in a clinch.
Carter slowing the pace effectively.
Carter lands a body punch in the clinch.

Carter will no doubt start fighting again in a minute but for now he's just having a little rest, leaning Gilbert up against the cage.

Gilbert is trying to pull guard but Carter has him pressed against the cage.

An uppercut to the body lands inside from Gilbert.

There's not a lot going on here and the crowd are letting the fighters know they're not willing to tolerate a lack of action.
The two fighters are working to gain dominance in the clinch.
Carter jumps guard but his hands slip and he falls flat on his back. Well, he's made himself look a right mug there, as Gilbert walks away with a smile on his face. Carter gets slowly back to his feet and shakes his head.
Gilbert throws a shot to the body.

Carter moves into the clinch.
Carter is trying to drag Gilbert to the mat but Gilbert just about manages to keep his footing. He used the cage to his advantage there.

Carter pulls Gilbert into guard.
Boooooooooooooooooooo!!! God, this has been a terrible round. Come on you two, sort yourselves out!

And that's the end of the fight!
I would just about give that final round to Ahmed Carter.
I think Carter has won this one but let's see whether the judges agree with me. Over to the ring announcer for the scorecards.
