PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a lightweight MMA rules bout between Jim Carrey (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class) and JR Powell (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class). Carrey comes to the cage accompanied by When the man comes around - Johnny Cash. The crowd seem to be enjoying Powell's choice of entrance music: Sound of Madness. Jim Carrey has the edge in experience - let's see if he can make that count tonight.

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the lightweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 5 - 4 - 0, fighting out of Las Vegas, Jim Carrey!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 3 - 2 - 0, fighting out of Las Vegas, JR Powell!
The judges for this bout are Stewart Dunkirk, Daniel Franklin and Chris Downing.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!

Powell shoots in from a long way out. He's driving through with the takedown attempt and he eventually gets it, landing in Carrey's guard.

Carrey looking for submissions from the bottom here. Moving his hips around, possibly looking for an armbar.
Carrey manages to land a sweep and now he's in mount on top!

Carrey looking for a guillotine from mount but Powell is having none of it.

Powell is in all sorts of trouble here.
Powell wriggling around on the bottom manages to avoid the strikes thrown by Carrey.

Powell manages to sweep nicely, so he's now on top. Carrey manages to get himself to full guard.

Carrey will have to put a bit more behind his punches if he's going to do any damage from this position.

Powell throws a big right hand that misses.
Powell slips nicely into half guard.
Carrey has been looking to land a fair amount of strikes on the ground. He might be looking to soften his opponent up in order to work for a submission.
Carrey is trying to stand.
Powell missing with the ground and pound from half guard.
Powell wants to control but Carrey is keeping him busy.
Carrey looks like he's trying to stand up.

It looks like we're going to have a standup here. Neither fighter is doing enough on the ground.
Carrey has a takedown stuffed.
Powell wants to clinch.
Powell tries to land a leg kick but Carrey saw it coming and moves away.

Powell fakes an overhand right and shoots for a takedown. Carrey sprawls well initially but Powell persists and gets the takedown into half guard.

Powell is looking for a kimura. It's going to be difficult to finish that from half guard though and Carrey defends it well.
Powell thows a huge punch but Carrey dodges it nicely.

The referee calls time. The cornermen exit stage left and we're back to business.


Powell looks for the body kick but Carrey saw that one coming.
Carrey blocks a head kick by Powell.
Carrey will have to do better than that with his takedown attempts.

Carrey misses with a takedown attempt - Powell sprawls well and throws a nice strike on the way out which just misses.
That's three failed takedown attempts in the round for Jim Carrey. That's going to take a lot out of him.
Powell throws a right hand that Carrey ducks under and follows up with a left that Carrey also avoids with ease.
Carrey blocks a head kick by Powell.
Carrey closes the distance and clinches up with Powell, looking for a takedown. Carrey pushes Powell against the cage but Powell circles to the side and manages to break the clinch.

Carrey tries to pull guard but can't drag his opponent to the mat. Powell just stands there and leans against the cage.
We've had a slow start to the round here - hopefully the action picks up.

Powell's corner calls for him to break the clinch, which he does.
Both fighters are absolutely exhausted here.
Nice takedown defense from Powell. No joy for Carrey on that attempt.

Powell shoots in for a takedown! He's got it and he's managed to land in full mount! That's better than Powell was expecting from the takedown attempt, I'm sure!

Powell tucks in and makes sure he doesn't lose the dominant position.
Carrey is desperately trying to get back to half guard.
Powell postures up and cracks his opponent a couple of times before moving back into close ground control. Carrey looks a forlorn figure.
Powell looking to control but Carrey is working nicely, looking to advance position himself.

Powell is working on an americana here. Ooh, that looks pretty nasty! Nope, Carrey has managed to escape the submission attempt.
Carrey is looking to improve his position but Powell isn't that keen on the idea.

There's not a lot going on here and the crowd are letting the fighters know they're not willing to tolerate a lack of action.
Powell thowing strikes but they're hitting the gloves, not doing any damage.
The fighters are pressed up against the cage, both looking to find a bit of space to work.
Carrey holding onto his opponent's waist for dear life, as Powell tries to land some strikes to get him to release his grip.
Powell tries to control but Carrey wriggling away.
Powell throwing sloppy strikes here. Perhaps if he tightened up his striking from such a dominant position, he'd be able to finish easier.

The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing.
Powell prevents Carrey from improving his position.

Carrey is not content to let Powell control the position.

Powell is trying to work for a kimura. He's got his hands clasped together - this could be trouble! No, Carrey has managed to free his arm - good work.

It looks like we're going to have a standup here. Neither fighter is doing enough on the ground.
Carrey changes levels and looks for a double leg takedown. Powell tries to avoid it but Carrey manages to keep hold of a leg and drag Powell to the ground. Powell escapes though and pops straight back up to his feet.
Powell tries a head kick but it misses.
Powell takes a hook to the side of the head. I wonder if that's got his ears ringing.

Powell closes the distance and looks for a trip takedown... aaaand he's got it - Powell lands in his opponent's guard.

Powell seems very keen to just sit and control from half guard but Carrey does not like that idea so much and is remaining active off his back.

JR Powell showed his class in that round. I'd imagine he'll take it on all the scorecards.
The fighters get back to their feet, the hooter sounds and we're back to the action! This is the final round!

Carrey drops back looking for a leg! Powell is in trouble here! The fighters roll with the hold and Powell manages to kick Carrey off! Carrey jumps back into Powell's guard.
Powell is pulling down on Carrey's head. It's preventing any offense from Carrey, at least for the moment.
Powell is working the butterfly guard. He manages to land a nice scissor sweep and is now in half guard on the top. Nice move.

Powell tries to close the distance and clinch but Carrey swats him to one side with an open hand palm strike and circles away.

Carrey connects with a leg kick. He turned his hip over nicely there.
Carrey fails miserably with a takedown attempt.

Powell is pushing Carrey up against the cage, for a bit of lean and pray action. Action being used the in the loosest possible sense of the word.
Powell is pressed up against the cage. Carrey has hold of a leg and is looking to drag Powell down to the mat. Powell avoids the attempt though and has circled away. We're back to striking at a distance.

That was a close round. You could make an argument for either fighter but I would give it to Jim Carrey.
Well Powell has outworked and out performed his opponent in all aspects of the game today. He was simply too good and the decision should be no more than a formality. Over to the ring announcer for the scorecards.
