PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a featherweight MMA rules bout between Maatia Supuaga (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class) and Rudy Gay (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class). Supuaga comes to the cage accompanied by Wanna Taki Taki. Both fighters look fresh as a daisy as they make their way towards the cage.

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the featherweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 4 - 2 - 0, fighting out of Montreal, Maatia Supuaga!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 3 - 2 - 0, fighting out of New York, Rudy Gay!
The judges for this bout are Franklyn Lucas, Steve Montenegro and David Schapiro.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!
Gay shoots in for a takedown. He's persisting with it as Supuaga sprawls well. Supuaga wins this battle and keeps the fight standing. Gay gets slowly back to his feet.
Gay closes the distance and takes a jab right on the nose as he does so.
Gay ducks under an overhand right and circles away with a smile on his face.
Gay feints the counter takedown.
Supuaga scores with a reasonable looking shot to the body. Gay doesn't seem bothered though.
Supuaga lands a jab-cross combination.
We've had a slow start to the round here - hopefully the action picks up.

Maatia Supuaga seems to be the more aggressive standup fighter in this bout.
Supuaga throws a combination but comes up with nothing but fresh air.

Gay shoots in and gets a takedown into Supuaga's guard.
The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing.
Fantastic stuff here - a very entertaining period of action, which has drawn cheers from the crowd.
Gay wants to control from the top but Supuaga keeps moving.

Gay in full guard, throwing the ground and pound. No damage this time.

Gay gets to his feet - Supuaga follows without any prompting.

Gay closes the distance and clinches up, looking for a takedown. He shifts his weight and gets a nice trip into half guard.
Supuaga pushes Gay off but Gay dives into side control.
Gay wants to lay and pray for a moment but Supuaga keeps working.
The fighters are pressed up against the cage, both looking to find a bit of space to work.

Gay working hard here to secure a kimura but he's not really in the right position for it.
Gay lands a decent elbow from side control.

Supuaga is sneaking out the side here. He's bucked Gay off and has taken his back!
Supuaga controlling well, preventing Gay from escaping the position.
The crowd cheering loudly, showing their appreciation for the quality fight we're seeing here.
Supuaga is not going to allow Gay to sit and survive in this position.
Supuaga looking to hold on to the position here but Gay rolls and ends up regaining guard.

The fighters are working up against the cage. Gay manages to wriggle his way back to his feet, so the fighters are now clinched against the cage.

Supuaga pushes off and circles away, back to the middle of the mat.
Nice takedown defense from Supuaga. No joy for Gay on that attempt.

Gay has double underhooks and is working for a body lock takedown. He's got it. The fighters land in half guard but Supuaga regains guard immediately.

Gay is keen to just control but Supuaga is a slippery customer.

That was a close round but I would say that Maatia Supuaga will probably get the nod.

Supuaga lunges in with swinging rights and lefts but Gay circles away quickly and effectively.
Gay tries a counter takedown but it's more of a dummy move, and he uses it to push himself away.
A punch lands to the side of Supuaga 's head but he takes it in his stride.
A looping hook to the body misses from Supuaga. Gay does a little dance to reset his feet.

and Gay counters with a nice body shot.

Gay fakes a strike and closes the distance, dragging Supuaga to the ground. Gay is now in Supuaga's guard.

Supuaga looking for submissions from the bottom but instead Gay passes into half guard.
Supuaga knows he needs to get back to his feet asap. He's simply no match for Gay on the ground.

Gay decides to stand up and try his luck on the feet.
We've had a slow start to the round here - hopefully the action picks up.
Supuaga is the aggressor but that punch slipped nicely by Gay.
Supuaga throws a jab, cross combination which is slipped

and Gay counters with a nice shoot takedown that brings the fighters to the ground.
The crowd cheering loudly, showing their appreciation for the quality fight we're seeing here.

Gay drops back looking for a leg! Supuaga is in trouble here! The fighters roll with the hold and Supuaga manages to kick Gay off! Gay jumps back into Supuaga's guard.

Gay trying to control but Supuaga is working from the bottom.
Gay won't allow Supuaga to get back to his feet.
Gay trying to control the position from guard on top but Supuaga is wriggling around, looking for whatever he can.
Supuaga is working an open guard here, looking to improve his position. No doubt that will leave him open to counters but at least he's being more offensive.

My god... these two guys really need to pick up the pace or everyone will leave to go get a beer.

Gay gets to his feet - Supuaga follows without any prompting.
Sloppy strikes from Supuaga. Those never looked like landing.
Supuaga misses with a jab and misses with a cross straight after too.
Supuaga lands an overhand left. A wild punch that just about connected.
We've been told by Supuaga's head coaches at Jako Gym that he's been working on his takedown defense in preparation for this fight.
No joy there for Supuaga, who threw a few shots but didn't land.
Supuaga ducks down and throws a hook to the body but Gay moves away.
Gay let fly with a counter punch to the body but it didn't land.

The fight moves into the clinch position.
Supuaga is defending well against a takedown attempt.

Gay takes a shot right to the bread basket.
The crowd cheers as Supuaga lands an impressive looking overhand right. Gay doesn't seem phased though.

so Gay counters with a double leg into guard. Good agility.
Gay throwing elbows and punches but not connecting, as Supuaga works some decent striking defense from the bottom.
Supuaga avoiding any damage from the ground and pound.
Rudy Gay has got the better of the ground game so far.
Gay tries to free his leg and advance position but Supuaga is retaining full guard.

Gay tries for an arm triangle. That looks pretty tight to me. Is this one over!?! Possibly, maybe, no Gay has let go of the choke. Obviously it wasn't as tight as we thought!

Gay is trying to land an Americana. He has the arm isolated but Supuaga is keeping cool and he's avoided the danger for now.

Rudy Gay showed his class in that round. I'd imagine he'll take it on all the scorecards.
The fighters' corners scream their final instructions, as the referee calls time. Here we go, back to the action! This is the final round!


Supuaga connects nicely with a jab. Noted by the judges no doubt.
Supuaga is moving around nicely and scores here with a single head shot.
Supuaga throws a wild combination but nothing lands.

Despite the aggression on Gay's face he doesn't fully commit to the counter.

Gay shoots in for a takedown and gets it. Let's see what he's got on the mat.
Gay is standing up over Supuaga. Supuaga looks to escape but Gay dives into side control.

Supuaga is looking to regain full guard. He's left an arm up in the air though and Gay has latched onto it... Big trouble! Gay pivots for an armbar - it's in tight and it Supuaga is tapping in no time flat! Great counter grappling there from Gay!

A very excited looking Rudy Gay made sure he remembered to thank all the fans both in the arena and on the internet. He said all the coolest people spend all day on MMA websites, which got a big reaction.
