PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a super heavyweight MMA rules bout between Buck Grant (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class) and Robert Root (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class). On his way into the cage it seems that Buck Grant has been attacked by a crazed fan! It looks like it might have been the just bleed guy! Luckily Buck Grant seems to be OK! I thought that lunatic was in prison!?

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the super heavyweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 1 - 2 - 0, fighting out of New York, Buck Grant!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 3 - 2 - 0, fighting out of New York, Robert Root!
The judges for this bout are David Schapiro, Columbo Gatti and Alyssa Summers.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!

Grant has taken the fight to the clinch.
Root prevents Grant from breaking the clinch.
Root lands a nice elbow.


It looks like Buck Grant has been cut.
Grant throws a head punch that misses.
Grant could do with losing a few pounds - he looks very soft around the mid section, to put it politely.
Grant wants to get back to striking at distance but Root won't allow it.

Root pulls guard effortlessly.
Grant controlling from the guard. I say controlling but really, he's stalling.
Grant preventing the sweep.

Root isolates an arm and boxes in a triangle. Grant stacks Root on his neck as he steps over and passes to the side. He's now in a much more dominant position where he can look to do some serious damage. Nice move by Grant!
We've had a slow start to the round here - hopefully the action picks up.

Grant tries for a kimura but Root is defending well.

The crowd are getting on the fighters' backs, as the pace has dropped off in the last minute or so.
Root sneaks back into half guard.
Grant with a momentary lay and pray from half guard.
Grant is thwarting Root's attempts to control the position.
Root is trying to stand up here but Grant is controlling him well.
If this pace continues, the referee will definitely step in and force a standup.
Grant thows a huge punch but Root dodges it nicely.

The referee has stepped in and called for a break in the action. We'll restart on the feet.

Root has managed to clinch.

That's three minutes gone in the round.
Grant misses the knee to the body. Nice hip positioning from Root.

Root's corner calls for him to break the clinch, which he does.

Root looking to shoot here. He's gone for it and he's landed a takedown into side control! Oh, that's bad for Grant!

Root creates some space and throws a big elbow, but Grant sees it coming and moves his head just enough to avoid the strike.
Root is moving around in side control but his primary objective seems to be to maintain the position.

The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing.

Root controlling from side mount.
Grant can't do much from the bottom here.
Root is putting a hurting on Grant here, landing some big shots from side control.
Grant prevents Root from improving position.
Boooooooooooooooooooo!!! God, this has been a terrible round. Come on you two, sort yourselves out!
Grant regains half guard there - taking advantage of Root's attempt to lay and pray for a moment.
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

Robert Root dominated that round.

That's time! Back to the action!



Root gets a powerful takedown and that's hurt Grant.


Grant is rocked!

Root is looking for a kimura. He might have it! No, Grant has escaped the position, nice work there.
Grant is putting a lot of effort into getting back to his feet here.
The step up in weight doesn't seem to be a problem for Root. He's performing admirably here against the bigger man.
We've had a slow start to the round here - hopefully the action picks up.
The strikes coming from Root are missing the target in this wave of attacks.
Grant is being controlled here.

Root decides to stand back up. Root steps back and let's Grant get back to his feet.

Root shoots in for a takedown and gets it. Let's see what he's got on the mat.
Grant looking to hit a scissor sweep but Root is one step ahead there.
Grant keeping full guard, as Root tries to pass.
Robert Root has got the better of the ground game so far.
Grant is looking to get back to his feet but can't, whilst Root is controlling him.
Grant is pulling down on Root's head to control his posture.

Root forces his way into half guard.
Root looks to land a strike but Grant avoids it nicely and regains full guard.
Root with a couple of shots to the head there. Not particularly brutal.
Grant has momentary wrist control but Root slips an elbow through the middle.
Root trying to control the position from guard on top but Grant is wriggling around, looking for whatever he can.

Root stands up from Grant's guard - Root perhaps looking for a knockout.
Root has been the more effective fighter overall so far.
Both fighters are absolutely exhausted here.
Root lands a nice leg kick that just misses Grant's sensitive parts.

That's three minutes gone in the round.
Root throws a head kick that misses.
Root swinging wildly here.
Root lands with a good body shot.

Root decides to change it up a bit and drives through with a nice takedown into half guard.

That's four minutes gone in the round.

Root is working for a kimura but Grant is defending it quite comfortably.
Root throwing shots but Grant is blocking nicely.
Root keeping composed on the top, looking to control the action.
Grant is looking for a sweep. Root is wise to his cunning plan and keeps the top position.
The crowd thankful this round is nearly over.
Grant is trying to stand.
Neither fighter is being very active at the moment, with Root in particular looking to stall.
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

Robert Root showed his class in that round. I'd imagine he'll take it on all the scorecards.

The minute break is over - no more time for sponges and pep talks - back to the action! This is the final round!


Both fighters circling a little - Root finishes the exchange with a kick to the body.
Root lands with a big right hook that stumbles Grant - he's out on his feet here! Root follows up with another monster hook that separates Grant from consciousness! Grant falls, almost in slow motion to the canvas! Root stands and admires his work as the crowd go wild.

Ladies and gentlemen, after 0:20 of round 3, we have a winner by way of KO (Punches). Robert Root!
