The bell rings for round one and we are underway!
Spliffton throws a push kick but Hyypia slaps the foot to one side.
Hyypia moves in looking to clinch but Spliffton pushes him off.
Spliffton wants to counter with a clinch but Hyypia pushes him away.
We've been informed that Spliffton has been sparring a lot of Muay Thai in the buildup to this fight so let's see if that has an impact on the result.

Hyypia ducks under an overhand right and circles away with a smile on his face.

Hyypia is the aggressor but that punch slipped nicely by Spliffton.
Hyypia throws a hook but Spliffton blocks it.
Spliffton fakes a couple of low kicks, before throwing one on the third attempt. It connects and Hyypia has to reset his feet before getting ready to engage.
Hyypia slips a jab and a cross from Spliffton.
Hyypia rushes in with a sloppy looking punch
and Spliffton cracks him with a counter punch right on the button.
Hyypia will need to tighten up his combinations if he doesn't want to gas himself out, swinging at thin air.
Spliffton throws out a counter right but Hyypia avoids it with no problem.
Spliffton scores with a hook to the body. Hyypia takes a step back and tries to catch his breath.
Spliffton misses with an attempted mid kick.
Hyypia throws a push kick but Spliffton slaps the foot to one side.

Spliffton throws a shot from downtown. Hyypia moves away and avoids it.
Spliffton bobs and weaves and throws out a fast jab that snaps Hyypia's head backwards.
This has been an exciting period of action!
Spliffton uses some good footwork to avoid the body shot by Hyypia.

Spliffton is landing a lot of head punches in this opening round! Hyypia had better start moving his head a bit unless he wants his face to turn into pâté.

The crowd applaud the fighters' efforts here as the round comes to an end.
Hyypia tries to land a front kick but Spliffton steps back. That was a bit too telegraphed.
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

Hyypia has a nice red mark on his side after a thudding body kick by Spliffton.

Sami Hyypia tried to hype himself up post fight but didn't word it too well and it ended up with him sounding like a bit of a tool.
