PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a lightweight MMA rules bout between Brenton Caldwell (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class) and Tahgi Assad (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class). These two fighters really are very evenly matched on the feet - it will be fascinating to see who can assert themselves in that aspect of the fight.

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the lightweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 0 - 0 - 0, fighting out of Montreal, Brenton Caldwell!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 1 - 0 - 0, fighting out of Montreal, Tahgi Assad!
The judges for this bout are Alec Ball, Trevor Gratis and Yves DeLean.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!

Excellent takedown into side control there by Caldwell.
Assad tries to wriggle free to get back to his feet but he's given up his back! Oops.
Assad is being controlled on the ground here - he must escape this position otherwise surely the end is near.
Caldwell's ground tactics aren't going to win him many fans. Let's hope he's got fireworks for us if he gets back to his feet because he's not doing much on the ground.
We've had a slow start to the round here - hopefully the action picks up.
Caldwell doesn't have the hooks in and Assad manages to turn into his guard.
Assad trying to control the position from guard on top but Caldwell is wriggling around, looking for whatever he can.

Assad is looking to sweep but instead, Caldwell has passed into half guard.
The fighters are pressed up against the cage, both looking to find a bit of space to work.

Caldwell slips a nice elbow through Assad's hands, connecting with Assad's forehead.
Assad tries to roll over but Caldwell keeps him under control.

Caldwell gets to his feet and calls his opponent to stand. Here come the fireworks!

Caldwell avoids the clinch attempt nicely.
Assad shoots for a takedown but Caldwell saw that one coming a mile off and avoided it easily.

Caldwell leaves Assad with his face pressed against the mat as he sprawls beautifully, defending against a solid takedown attempt.
Caldwell appeared to be looking to counter that last move with a leg kick.
A looping hook to the body misses from Assad. Caldwell does a little dance to reset his feet.
The crowd thankful this round is nearly over.
Assad misses with a few strikes there.
Assad has his takedown stuffed
and Caldwell makes him pay by landing a nice hook to the body before moving out of range.
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

Caldwell really does look like a pencil wearing a pair of gloves. Let's hope he has a gameplan to suit that ridiculous body shape.

A punch combination from Assad misses.
Assad throws a looping left and ducks down for a takedown. He's got his arms around Caldwell's waist but Caldwell gets an underhook and avoids the takedown by throwing Assad off to one side.
Brenton Caldwell has stuffed three takedown attempts in the round now. That's going to take a lot out of Tahgi Assad.
Assad tries to clinch up against the cage, rushing in to close the distance. Caldwell manages to break the clinch and circles back to the middle of the mat.

A quick step to the side and Caldwell tries to counter with a shot to the body but it doesn't connect.

That's the end of the interval. I'm sure that seemed a lot quicker than a minute for our two fighters! Back to the action. The crowd applaud as we get ready to start the final round!

and Caldwell counters with a left and a right that stings Assad.

Caldwell shoots in and bounces Assad off the cage to secure the takedown into guard.
Caldwell is really dominating this fight. Is there anything that Assad can do to turn this around?

Assad is looking for a triangle but Caldwell pushes his legs off easily.

Assad is working the butterfly guard. He manages to land a nice scissor sweep and is now in half guard on the top. Nice move.

Caldwell is staying active underneath Assad, who seems content to just control the action from this position.

Assad is trying a forearm choke… I don't think that's going to do much at this level of the game.

Assad seems to be trying to get a kimura but instead Caldwell has recovered full guard.

In the pre-fight buildup videos we saw Assad working his ground and pound in the gym. He isn't landing a great percentage of his ground strikes so far though.

The ref stands the fighters back up due to a lack of activity.
Assad shoots in but doesn't get the takedown
and Caldwell makes him pay by landing a nice hook to the body before moving out of range.
Assad changes levels and looks for a double leg takedown. Caldwell tries to avoid it but Assad manages to keep hold of a leg and drag Caldwell to the ground. Caldwell escapes though and pops straight back up to his feet.

Boooooooooooooooooooo!!! God, this has been a terrible round. Come on you two, sort yourselves out!

Well Caldwell has outscored his opponent in every aspect of the fight today. Only a scarily incompetent judge or two will keep him from a well deserved win... Over to the ring announcer for the scorecards.
