PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a lightweight MMA rules bout between Helix Cabrera (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class) and Jose Correa (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class). Chooooooooon! I think Cabrera might be my favorite fighter, now he's come out to Security! Mean muggin Helix is about to assault the whole opposing camp!. Both fighters look fresh as a daisy as they make their way towards the cage.

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the lightweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 31 - 13 - 1, fighting out of Amsterdam, Helix Cabrera!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 17 - 10 - 0, fighting out of Montreal, Jose Correa!
The judges for this bout are Frank Antenori, Jack Bonds and Timothy Bukovac.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!
Correa slips under a jab.
Cabrera walks into a straight right hand from Correa.

Cabrera is looking to control Correa's leg but it's slowly edging free. Can Cabrera avoid being mounted?

Correa is trying to work for a kimura. This could be trouble! No, Cabrera has managed to free his arm - good work.

Cabrera is defending against the submission attempts here by Correa.

We've had a slow start to the round here - hopefully the action picks up.

Correa got a little sloppy there for a moment and Cabrera has worked his way into a loose triangle - can he finish it?! No, Correa has managed to get both his arms back between Cabrera's legs - danger averted.

Cabrera is active off his back here, looking for submissions.

Correa has the superior BJJ but he's also working some ground strikes into his gameplan.
Cabrera is working the butterfly guard. He manages to land a nice scissor sweep and is now in half guard on the top. Nice move.

Correa is looking to regain full guard. Not this time though.
Cabrera wants to lay and pray for a moment but Correa keeps working.
Cabrera takes advantage of the dominant position to land a couple of big hammer fists.
Cabrera throwing punches and elbows but they're not doing any damage.
Correa moves his hips nicely and gets into full guard.
Cabrera landing with the ground and pound.
The crowd thankful this round is nearly over.
Cabrera slows down the pace of the fight for a moment. He'll need to remain active if he doesn't want to see the fight stood back up.
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

That's the end of the interval. I'm sure that seemed a lot quicker than a minute for our two fighters! Back to the action.


Cabrera shoots for a double leg takedown but Correa sprawls well. He's pushed Cabrera's face into the mat and manages to get back to his feet relatively easily.
Correa fakes high and swings low for a body shot but Cabrera manages to avoid it.
Correa misses with a body shot.
Correa throws a body shot but no joy.
A solid leg kick lands there for Cabrera.
Cabrera lands a really nice looking cross but Correa seems unphased.
Correa connects with a looping left hand that seems like it dazed Cabrera momentarily.
Cabrera throws a low kick but Correa avoids it.
Correa drops down looking to force a counter takedown but Cabrera defends it well.
Correa swings wildly with a hook that is half blocked by Cabrera.
Some bone on bone action there as Correa checks a low kick. Luckily it wasn't a particularly hard one.

Cabrera tries a switch kick but it misses it's target.
Cabrera takes a punch right to his stomach. That took the wind out of him momentarily.

Cabrera's corner calls for a 1-2. Cabrera obliges with the 1 part as he scores the single shot and moves back out of range.

Cabrera ducks down and throws a hook to the body but Correa moves away.
Cabrera uses good head movement to avoid the hook from Correa.
Cabrera is looking to counter the offense by Correa and move into the clinch.
Correa avoids the head kick by Cabrera.

Correa avoids a low kick by using good footwork.
A little jabbing left from Correa on the counter but it doesn't find it's target.

and Correa counters with a takedown into side control.
Cabrera is looking for a sweep.
Correa has been the more effective fighter overall so far.
Correa wants to lay and pray for a moment but Cabrera keeps working.
Cabrera looks to move to half guard but instead Correa has passed into mount! Damn!
Correa breaks from Cabrera's wrist control and lands an elbow.
Correa looking to ground and pound his opponent to a finish here.
Cabrera is desperately trying to improve his position but Correa has a good base and remains in mount.
Correa lands a couple of good shots and Cabrera has given up his back, trying to escape the position!
This has been an exciting period of action!
Correa gets his hands free as Cabrera looks to control.
Cabrera looking very determined here, making life difficult for Correa.
Oooh a big shot gets through from Correa. Many more shots like that and the referee will have to think about stepping in!

Correa scores with strikes from the back.

Correa is landing with strikes. Cabrera can't take much more of this.

I really don't envy Cabrera right now.

Correa is looking to finish the fight by rear naked choke. Cabrera knows exactly what he's got planned though, so he's defending well. Maybe a few strikes would soften Cabrera for a finish.

Correa moves into range and throws a lovely three punch combination.
Correa swings for the body but Cabrera moves out of range.
Cabrera quickly followed up with a counter body kick but doesn't connect.

Correa bobs and weaves and unloads with a good uppercut.
Correa throws a lazy right hand but Cabrera sees it coming a mile off and sidesteps it easily.

Cabrera tries to close the distance and clinch up but Correa swats him away and circles back towards the center.
Correa tries a counter takedown but it's more of a dummy move, and he uses it to push himself away.

Cabrera takes a solid shot to the body. That one hurt him but he's trying not to show it.

Cabrera takes a jab on the nose there. A little bit of blood seems to be coming out. Hopefully that won't affect his breathing.
Correa ducks low and lands a nice hook to the body of his opponent.

and Cabrera counters with a kick to the head that grazes his opponent. Correa is lucky that one didn't land flush.
Correa slaps away a takedown attempt from Cabrera, before circling back to the center of the mat.

Cabrera looks to have improved his striking defense since last time we saw him fight.

Correa lands a vicious shot with the stealth of a sniper and the strength of a viper. Are vipers that strong? I can think of lots of things that are stronger than a viper - not many rhyme with sniper though.
Correa throws a hard body shot but it just misses.

Correa closes the distance and looks for a trip takedown... aaaand he's got it - Correa lands in his opponent's guard.

Correa is working Cabrera over from the guard. He should look to pass the guard and do a little more damage with these strikes.

Cabrera manages to land a sweep and he's now on top! Lovely Jiu Jitsu!

Well Correa has outworked and out performed his opponent in all aspects of the game today. He was simply too good and the decision should be no more than a formality. Over to the ring announcer for the scorecards.

A very excited looking Jose Correa rambled incoherently for about 5 minutes post fight about how awesome he is. It was kinda funny for a while but then everyone got annoyed.
