PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a featherweight MMA rules bout between Alejandro Gomez (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class) and Akio Yamamoto (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class). Yamamoto is bouncing up and down as he enters the arena, backed by Lil Whyte - Oxy Cotton. These two fighters really are very evenly matched on the feet - it will be fascinating to see who can assert themselves in that aspect of the fight.

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the featherweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 1 - 0 - 0, fighting out of Sydney, Alejandro Gomez!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 1 - 0 - 0, fighting out of Sydney, Akio Yamamoto!
The judges for this bout are Donatello Bradman, Ron Honeybunn and John Mangel.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!
Yamamoto slaps away a takedown attempt from Gomez, before circling back to the center of the mat.
And Yamamoto tries to counter it with a takedown but Gomez pushes his down on his head and steps out.

and Gomez counters with a nice double leg into side control. Yamamoto won't be happy with that.
Yamamoto tries to work a leg under to get back to half guard but Gomez wriggles his own leg back out and remains in side control.
Gomez works to advance to full mount. Yamamoto defends for a few seconds but eventually he succumbs.
Yamamoto is looking to improve his position but Gomez isn't that keen on the idea.
We've had a slow start to the round here - hopefully the action picks up.

Yamamoto tries to check a leg kick but that clearly hurt him.

Excellent takedown into side control there by Gomez.
Yamamoto tries to work a leg under to get back to half guard but Gomez wriggles his own leg back out and remains in side control.
Gomez works a knee to the body and follows up with a nice elbow to the head.

Gomez decides to stand up, so the ref orders Yamamoto to his feet.
Horrible takedown attempt by Gomez or perhaps it was just good defense by Yamamoto, which made it look bad.
Yamamoto is loading up here, looking for a big counter of his own.

Gomez shoots in for a takedown but Yamamoto shows good takedown defense there and keeps this one on the feet.

Gomez lets the fists fly and connects with a left straight followed by a right hook.

Yamamoto tries to counter with a clinch but Gomez shakes him off and moves away.

Gomez wants to pass the guard but Yamamoto is defending well.

Yamamoto tries to roll over but Gomez keeps him under control.

Gomez looks to score with a jab to the body but Yamamoto is just out of range.

Gomez closes the distance and gets a double leg, slamming Yamamoto to the mat! Yamamoto manages to get full guard.
Gomez throws a strike but Yamamoto rolls with it and manages to sweep. Now he's in guard on top.


Yamamoto drops back for a leg! It's a sloppy attempt though and Yamamoto jumps back into guard quickly, to retain the dominant position.

Yamamoto is trying a forearm choke… I don't think that's going to do much at this level of the game.

Gomez has no desire to be mounted, so is trying to control. Yamamoto is working away from the top position though.

Yamamoto is trying to work a guillotine from the top, or something like that? Don't know how he thinks he's going to get a finish from there.

Yamamoto postures up as if he's going to throw some strikes but drops back for an ankle! Gomez is in big trouble! He looks ready to tap! But no, he's escaped and dives on top of Yamamoto, into his guard.

Gomez has gone for a leg lock! Yamamoto slips out almost immediately though and dives into Gomez's guard.

The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing.

Yamamoto is sneakily working for an arm triangle but Gomez sees it coming and defends easily.

Alejandro Gomez overall seems to be getting the better of the ground position in the fight so far.

Yamamoto is looking for a kimura but he's never going to get it from there.
Gomez preventing any damage for now, controlling his opponent's head.

Gomez tries to get to full guard but Yamamoto has control of the leg.

Yamamoto is looking for a kimura. It's going to be difficult to finish that from half guard though and Gomez defends it well.

Yamamoto thinks about going for a leg but decides against it, in order to maintain the position.
Gomez looking to hit a scissor sweep but Yamamoto is one step ahead there.
Gomez pulls Yamamoto in close to prevent any damage.
Boooooooooooooooooooo!!! God, this has been a terrible round. Come on you two, sort yourselves out!

Akio Yamamoto showed his class in that round. I'd imagine he'll take it on all the scorecards.
That's the end of the interval. I'm sure that seemed a lot quicker than a minute for our two fighters! Back to the action. This is the final round!

Gomez is really dominating this fight. Is there anything that Yamamoto can do to turn this around?
Yamamoto is working for a takedown up against the cage. He can't get it on this occasion though.

Yamamoto has his foot on Gomez's thigh. He's trying to push off and get in position for a triangle, I think. Gomez works his way back into a safe position though.
Gomez knows he needs to get back to his feet asap. He's simply no match for Yamamoto on the ground.
Yamamoto takes a big intake of breath there - he's definitely tired.

Gomez slips nicely into half guard.
Gomez looks over to his corner - he wants some instructions but his corner are not responding.
Gomez has controlled the position for a good 20 seconds, which will no doubt be starting to frustrate his opponent.

The crowd are starting to boo a lack of action.

Yamamoto is looking to sinch up a guillotine here but Gomez pulls his head out easily.
Gomez slips a nice elbow through Yamamoto's hands, connecting with Yamamoto's forehead.

Gomez is working for submissions here but there's nothing on.
Gomez content to control rather than advance.

Yamamoto actively working from the bottom here.

Gomez is scoring with some nice ground and pound from the dominant position.

Gomez decides to stand and escape the position.
Gomez feints a jab promting Yamamoto to slip. Gomez then demonstrates his capabilities by jabbing again. Yamamoto slips again and ducks right into an uppercut.
Gomez tries to shoot in for a takedown. He's got hold of a leg but Yamamoto swivels and escapes.

Gomez closes the distance and after a bit of a stuggle, scores a takedown into Yamamoto's guard.

Yamamoto working from the bottom, still in full guard. He's managed to get a loose triangle. Gomez doesn't seem to be doing much to defend here, obviously he feels comfortable in the position. Gomez manages to throw the legs off his shoulder and he's back into guard - no problem.

Gomez is working hard to pass the guard. He's done it - he's now in full mount! Trouble for Yamamoto!

The crowd growing excited in anticipation of a finish here! Right on cue, Gomez cracks his opponent with a massive right hand that draws loud cheers!

And that's the end of the fight!
Alejandro Gomez showed his dominance in that final round.
Well Gomez has outscored his opponent in every aspect of the fight today. Only a scarily incompetent judge or two will keep him from a well deserved win... Over to the ring announcer for the scorecards.
