PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a bantamweight MMA rules bout between Kian Mcvay (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class) and DJ Smith (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class). Mcvay comes to the cage accompanied by The xx -intro . Over to our ring announcer for the fighter introductions!

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the bantamweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 0 - 0 - 0, fighting out of Las Vegas, Kian Mcvay!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 1 - 6 - 0, fighting out of Las Vegas, DJ Smith!
The judges for this bout are Wesley Smith, Cecil Peabody and Daniel Franklin.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!
Smith shoots in but doesn't get the takedown
and Mcvay counters with a three punch combination, finished off with a leg kick. Nice work.
Mcvay staying out of range there.

Smith gets tackled into the cage by Mcvay. Mcvay maintains the clinch.
Mcvay manages to get underhooks and slows down the pace for a moment.
Both fighters working to control the clinch.

Mcvay has Smith pressed up against the cage. He's trying to work for a single leg takedown. Mcvay pulls back from the cage and twists to the side, sending Smith tumbling to the mat - Mcvay dives into Smith's guard.

Smith working from the bottom, still in full guard. He's managed to get a loose triangle. Mcvay doesn't seem to be doing much to defend here, obviously he feels comfortable in the position. Mcvay manages to throw the legs off his shoulder and he's back into guard - no problem.
We've had a slow start to the round here - hopefully the action picks up.
Mcvay lands a couple of elbows.

Mcvay has controlled the position for a good 20 seconds, which will no doubt be starting to frustrate his opponent.
Smith wants to sweep but no luck.
Mcvay not doing a lot at the moment. He'll have to show some more aggression or the fight will get stood up.

A few boos can be heard. I'm sure they will multiply if the fighters don't pick up the pace.
Mcvay's ground tactics aren't going to win him many fans. Let's hope he's got fireworks for us if he gets back to his feet because he's not doing much on the ground.
The referee is asking the fighters to pick up the pace.

The referee decides to stand the fighters back up.

Mcvay dives in and scores a takedown into Smith's guard.

Smith wants to sweep here but Mcvay controlling him for the moment.
Mcvay slows down the pace of the fight, as he sits in guard.
We must be close to a standup if these guys don't pick up the pace.

The referee has decided to stand the fighters back up, so we'll restart on the feet.

Neither fighter has done anything of merit for a good minute or two here and the crowd are not happy about it.

Mcvay closes the distance and clinches up, looking for a takedown. He shifts his weight and gets a nice trip into half guard.
Still in half guard, Mcvay seems content to control.
Mcvay seems to have a rather negative gameplan on the ground. He seems keen to just score the takedown and hold down Smith for as long as he can get away with.
Mcvay scores with a couple of good hammerfists.

Mcvay wants to get back to his feet.
Boooooooooooooooooooo!!! God, this has been a terrible round. Come on you two, sort yourselves out!
Mcvay is taking a breather. Smith says something to him but it's hard to make out. Perhaps he's telling him to get on with it and actually do something.
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

The fighters' corners scream their final instructions, as the referee calls time. Here we go, back to the action!



A momentary lapse in concentration from Smith enables Mcvay to shoot in and score with a neat double leg. Smith manages to secure a closed guard as the fighters hit the mat.
Mcvay works over Smith with some ground and pound from guard.
Mcvay is frustrating his opponent with some stalling tactics from top position.

Mcvay is trying to work a guillotine from the top, or something like that? Don't know how he thinks he's going to get a finish from there.
We've had a slow start to the round here - hopefully the action picks up.

The referee has decided to stand the fighters back up, so we'll restart on the feet.
Smith tries to drive through with a takedown attempt but Mcvay defends well and Smith ends up having to push Mcvay into the cage where they will battle it out in the clinch.

Mcvay manages to break the clinch.

Mcvay fakes with an overhand right and moves in to clinch with Smith, pushing him back against the cage.

Mcvay misses the knee to the body. Nice hip positioning from Smith.

Mcvay has moved round to his opponent's back and is looking for a suplex! Oh snap! He's tossed Smith clear over his head and slammed him to the mat!
Mcvay is not going to allow Smith to sit and survive in this position.

Smith defends a rear naked choke attempt by controlling one of Mcvay's arms.
The fans in attendance giving it up for the two fighters, who have really let it all hang out in the last minute or so!
Smith tries to escape the position.

Mcvay is working for the rear naked choke. He has one arm under the chin but Smith has hold of the other arm. A bit of a stalemate here.
Smith is trapped and Mcvay is scoring with shots to the head and body.

Mcvay trying to secure his dominant position for a moment - making sure Smith doesn't escape.
This is a sustained period of stalling by Mcvay.
Smith is defending well here and trying to improve his position.
Kian Mcvay overall seems to be getting the better of the ground position in the fight so far.

That's four minutes gone in the round.
A lull in the action here being met with boos from the crowd.
Mcvay is looking cool and calm here, just waiting for a good opportunity to attack and finish the fight from this dominant position.
Mcvay lands a couple of good shots to his opponent's body and a final shot to the head. Good little attack there by Mcvay.
I really don't envy Smith right now.
Mcvay is really dominating this fight. Is there anything that Smith can do to turn this around?

The crowd thankful this round is nearly over.

Mcvay has his hand under the chin of his opponent looking for the choke. He's nearly got it! This one could be all over! But no, Smith has freed his hand and lives to survive another… well, another couple of seconds at least!
Mcvay is looking to finish with some ground and pound!
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

OK. That's time! The bell goes and we're back to the action. This is the final round!



Mcvay scores with a nice takedown into half guard. Let's see what he's got on the ground.

Smith manages to escape and get back to his feet!

Mcvay looks for a takedown. He's got it. We're now in half guard.

Mcvay is working for a submission of some sort.
Wooooo! Give it up for these two warriors! They are putting on a show!
Smith is looking to regain full guard. Not this time though.
Smith wants to control but Mcvay is keeping busy and won't allow it.

Mcvay tries to stand but can't do so whilst Smith controls his leg.
Mcvay wants to pass to mount but Smith is defending the position.

We've had a lack of effective grappling in the last minute or so, which could well see a referee standup.

Mcvay seems to be looking for submissions.

That's two minutes gone in the round.
Well. There's a bit of a lull in the action here and the crowd are starting to get restless.
Mcvay content to sit in half guard and control for a moment.
Smith has no desire to be mounted, so is trying to control. Mcvay is working away from the top position though.

The referee decides to stand the fighters back up.

Mcvay shoots in from a long way out. He's driving through with the takedown attempt and he eventually gets it, landing in Smith's guard.

Mcvay controls the pace of the fight for a moment.
Smith is looking to get back to his feet but can't, whilst Mcvay is controlling him.
Mcvay might be looking to lock onto one of his opponent's long limbs for a submission, whilst we're on the ground.
Mcvay is taking a break and basically stalling. The referee will not allow him to do that for long.
The fighters are pressed up against the cage, both looking to find a bit of space to work.
Mcvay won't allow Smith to sweep him here.
Smith takes a big intake of breath there - he's definitely tired.

The referee has motioned to the fighters to stand back up. He just wasn't happy with the level of activity.

Smith gets taken down but at least he's managed to land in guard.

Smith looking to hit a scissor sweep but Mcvay is one step ahead there.
Boooooooooooooooooooo!!! God, this has been a terrible round. Come on you two, sort yourselves out!
Smith trying to punch from his back but it's not doing any damage.

And that's the end of the fight!
Kian Mcvay showed his dominance in that final round.
Well Mcvay has outscored his opponent in every aspect of the fight today. Only a scarily incompetent judge or two will keep him from a well deserved win... Over to the ring announcer for the scorecards.
