PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a welterweight MMA rules bout between Cody Miller (ranked 24186 p4p, 929 weight class) and Ivan Shine (ranked 21360 p4p, 923 weight class). Both these guys have solid standup skills and neither is particularly fantastic on the ground, so let's hope for a nice standup war!

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the welterweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 0 - 1 - 0, fighting out of New York, Cody Miller!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 4 - 3 - 0, fighting out of Las Vegas, Ivan Shine!
The judges for this bout are Chad Campbell, Lou da Vinci and Eddie Farnsworth.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!

Shine instigates a clinch.
Miller is trying to break free.
Shine slowing the pace effectively.

Shine breaks the clinch and we're back to striking at distance.
Miller rushes forward with a series of wild hooks but Shine moves out of range and avoids them all easily.

Shine gets to the clinch - let's see what his plan is here.
Miller is trying to force a seperation but Shine has the dominant position.
Shine blocks a body shot from Miller.
Shine lands a body shot in the clinch.

Shine jumps guard and drags Miller to the mat. He's obviously going to be looking for submissions off his back.
Shine wants to stand but Miller is controlling the position.
We've had a slow start to the round here - hopefully the action picks up.

Shine wriggles free and stands up.

It looks like Cody Miller has been cut.

Miller definitely looks more muscular than last time we saw him fight.

Shine rushes Miller and presses him up against the cage.
Miller is trying to stall.
Miller swings away with an uppercut that misses.
Shine has Miller pressed against the cage, preventing Miller from circling away and getting back to striking at range.
Shine's corner are urging him to control the action in the clinch for a moment, rather than mount any serious offense. I'm sure the crowd appreciate those instructions... not.

Shine escapes the clinch and we're back to striking.
Miller keeps his opponent at a distance with a nice jab.


It looks like Ivan Shine has been cut.
Miller connects with an inside leg kick.
Miller throws a hook to the body but it doesn't connect.
Shine moves out of range of the body kick.
Shine throws a leg kick which misses Miller's front leg but catches the back leg as Miller tries to avoid it.

That's two minutes gone in the round.
Miller misses with a half-hearted attempt at a head kick.
Shine avoids the head kick by Miller.
Shine looks like he wants to counter punch here.
Miller throws a head kick that misses.
It seemed like Shine was going to counter with the hook but didn't fully commit to it.

Shine moves into range and clinches up with Miller.
Shine working on landing some head shots here - that one got through nicely.
Fantastic stuff here - a very entertaining period of action, which has drawn cheers from the crowd.

Shine wants the takedown. Miller is fighting it off but Shine persists and manages to bring the fight to the ground, ending up in Miller's guard against the cage.
Shine throwing elbows and punches but not connecting, as Miller works some decent striking defense from the bottom.
The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing.
Miller preventing the ground and pound from doing any damage.
In the pre-fight buildup videos we saw Shine working his ground and pound in the gym. He isn't landing a great percentage of his ground strikes so far though.
Shine is looking to work some ground and pound but Miller has wrist control.

Shine throwing shots from guard but he's hitting more mat than opponent.
Shine tries to free his leg and advance position but Miller is retaining full guard.

The crowd are showing their displeasure at the lack of action as loud boos ring out around the arena.
Shine wants to pass to mount but Miller is defending the position.
Miller wants to get back to full guard.
Shine keeping composed on the top, looking to control the action.

The referee has decided to stand the fighters back up, so we'll restart on the feet.
A looping hook to the body misses from Miller. Shine does a little dance to reset his feet.
Miller throws a lazy head kick
and Shine counters with a lovely straight right hand!

Shine closes the distance and clinches.
Miller is trying to break the clinch but Shine has him pressed against the cage.
Shine pushes Miller back against the cage and lands a hook to the side of the head.
Miller is trying to work out of this bad position, with his back against the cage.

A nice left hand lands by Shine.
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

Ivan Shine dominated that round.
Both fighters have cut men working on them during the interval.
OK. That's time! The bell goes and we're back to the action.



Shine rushes Miller and pushes him back against the cage in a clinch.
Shine tries to pull guard but can't drag his opponent to the mat. Miller just stands there and leans against the cage.
Shine softening up his opponent with strikes, against the cage.
A short right hand to the side of the head by Shine.
Shine pushes Miller back against the cage and lands a hook to the side of the head.
The two fighters are working to gain dominance in the clinch.
An uppercut on the inside fails to land for Miller.
Miller is looking to control Shine's arms but Shine gets an underhook and turns him. Now Miller has his back to the cage.
Miller wants to push off and get back to the center of the mat but Shine has him pressed against the cage.
Shine working some nice short punches in the clinch.
We've had a slow start to the round here - hopefully the action picks up.
Miller looks like he'd prefer to be striking at range right now.
Shine tries for a takedown. No joy.

Shine has been the more effective fighter overall so far.
Shine throws a hook to the body. More of an arm punch but it's all scoring with the judges.

Shine using the Thai plumb to throw knees but Miller has his back arched nicely, preventing the strike.

Shine stays in close to his opponent and throws a right hand to the body.
Shine makes some space for himself and lands an uppercut.

The crowd cheering loudly, showing their appreciation for the quality fight we're seeing here.

Shine drops Miller onto one knee with a big uppercut from the clinch! Miller is propped up by the cage and works his way back to his feet!

Shine lands an uppercut in the clinch that drops Miller to his knees! Shine keeps firing more shots against his stricken opponent and the referee jumps in to save him!

Ladies and gentlemen, after 2:20 of round 2, we have a winner by way of TKO (Strikes). Ivan Shine!
After winning the bout, Ivan Shine thanked all his fans and promised he'd do even better in his next fight. The crowd seemed to love his humility.
