PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a light heavyweight MMA rules bout between Iain Reilly (ranked 1894 p4p, 260 weight class) and J.J. Grey (ranked 2950 p4p, 397 weight class). Reilly comes to the cage accompanied by Dubliners - Fields of Athenry. The crowd giving both fighters a great reception on their way into the arena. That's good to see.

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the light heavyweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 12 - 20 - 0, fighting out of New York, Iain Reilly!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 30 - 13 - 2, fighting out of Rio de Janeiro, J.J. Grey!
The judges for this bout are Trevor Gratis, Gregory Folan and Robert Douchet.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!
Grey fails with the takedown.
A little feinted left hand from Reilly on the counter but he doesn't commit to it.
A combination from Reilly does no damage.
Grey let fly with a counter punch to the body but it didn't land.
Grey throws out a loose jab but Reilly uses good head movement to avoid it.
Reilly throws out a token jab with nothing on it.
Reilly throws a nice hook to the body that draws an oooh from the crowd.
Reilly misses with a few strikes there.
Grey dances in quickly and lands a nice inside leg kick on Reilly. That did some damage!
Reilly missing with a left hand there. Grey was out of range so wasted energy throwing that one.
Horrible takedown attempt by Grey or perhaps it was just good defense by Reilly, which made it look bad.
We've had a slow start to the round here - hopefully the action picks up.

and Grey connects with a straight left hand counter down the middle.


It looks like Iain Reilly has been cut.
Grey shoots in looking for a takedown but Reilly manages to keep the fight standing, pushing Grey's face into the canvas for good measure before circling away.
Iain Reilly has stuffed three takedown attempts in the round now. That's going to take a lot out of J.J. Grey.
Reilly throws a hook to the body but it doesn't connect.
Reilly bobs and weaves and throws out a fast jab that snaps Grey's head backwards.
The crowd cheers as Reilly lands an impressive looking overhand right. Grey doesn't seem phased though.
This is a great period of action - very entertaining stuff!
Reilly throws a right hand that Grey ducks under and follows up with a left that Grey also avoids with ease.

Reilly looking to score a takedown here. Grey is defending well but Reilly drives through and ends up in Grey's guard.
Reilly keeps in close for a moment and lands a decent shot to the side of Grey's head.
Reilly is working Grey over from the guard. He should look to pass the guard and do a little more damage with these strikes.
Hammerfist, elbow! yells Reilly's corner. There ya go! There ya go!

Reilly missing there with some ground and pound from the guard.

Reilly got a little sloppy there for a moment and Grey has worked his way into a loose triangle - can he finish it?! No, Reilly has managed to get both his arms back between Grey's legs - danger averted.

Reilly keeps in close for a moment and lands a decent shot to the side of Grey's head.
Reilly with a couple of shots to the head there. Not particularly brutal.

Grey has a loose triangle. He'll be looking to tighten that up but Reilly can see exactly what he's planning and manages to posture up and free himself.
Grey wants to sweep here but Reilly controlling him for the moment.
Both fighters have adopted an aggressive gameplan on the ground!
Reilly throwing shots from guard but he's hitting more mat than opponent.

Grey is looking for a triangle but Reilly pushes his legs off easily.

Reilly postures up to throw the ground and pound strikes but they don't connect.

We've seen a great period of action over the last minute or so - credit to both fighters for going all out!
Reilly landing some decent shots from guard.
The fighters are starting to get a bit slippery now, which will make submissions a bit more difficult.
Reilly working some ground and pound from guard but it's not doing any damage.

Grey working from the bottom, still in full guard. He's managed to get a loose triangle. Reilly doesn't seem to be doing much to defend here, obviously he feels comfortable in the position. Reilly manages to throw the legs off his shoulder and he's back into guard - no problem.

Reilly cracks Grey with a solid left hand.
Reilly wants to pass the guard but Grey is keeping the position.

Grey is throwing his legs up, looking for submissions. Reilly is aware though and is defending well.

Grey has momentary wrist control but Reilly slips an elbow through the middle.
Reilly has to be careful here, sitting in the guard of a superior BJJ player.
Reilly is in close to Grey's body, working some short punches and elbows.
Reilly throws a big right hand that misses.

Grey manages to work his way to half guard, despite Reilly's best efforts.

Reilly is nestled in close to Grey, controlling him well. He's worked in a nice elbow to the side of the head as well, for good measure.
Reilly seems to be taking a bit of a break to think of his next move. He lands a short punch in the meantime.
Grey wants to get back to full guard.
Reilly is keeping good posture, landing some ground and pound.
The crowd are loving this. Great action here.

Grey is looking to sinch up a guillotine here but Reilly pulls his head out easily.

Reilly lands strikes from half guard.
Reilly takes advantage of the dominant position to land a couple of big hammer fists.


Grey is rocked!
Reilly lands a big elbow from half guard. That looks like it's hurt Grey quite badly. Grey pulls Reilly in close trying to recover. Reilly postures up and lands two really hard shots that put Grey on queer street! The ref takes a look and decides to call an end to the fight! Possibly an early stoppage but Grey doesn't seem to be complaining too much.

Ladies and gentlemen, after 4:59 of round 1, we have a winner by way of TKO (Strikes). Iain Reilly!
Iain Reilly seemed lost for words in his post fight interview but he remembered to thank his fans and directed everyone to his website.
